MG4 X-Power waiting area

I had a run-in with a guy on Twitter last night who said EVs wouldn't be a runner until the batteries could give 600 miles range. Because people want what they've been used to.
Yep, people focus on the range WAY too much. Most times the battery will outlast your bladder and by the time you’ve gone in, found the loos, decided if you want a drink or maybe a snack back out and you’re mostly charged again.

Not saying there aren’t issues with problematic chargers and things and scale needs to come but it IS doing. When I drove a first gen i3 for 4 years it had a range of less than 100 miles and took an age to charge. BUT ecotricity was still free vend so I did SO many excess miles to go grab free miles heh.
Since then though I had an i30 estate so I’d not used the charging infrastructure and I’m super excited to see now there are SO many chargers and also that range is so much higher (even on the XP) that most of my journeys (short of an actual road trip) will usually fall within the range or with a very brief comfort stop.

People bemoaning them should be made to use ABRP and plan some of their regular journeys and see just what would be required.

So many men of a certain age on this forum! My bladder doesn't even come into the equation. I used to do 430 miles in an evening with one stop for fuel, and I just filled the tank, paid, and got going again. I couldn't do that in an EV, but fortunately I don't want to. People who do are likely to be among the last of the EV adopters, and by that time stopping for 20 minutes or so to charge will be so normalised that we won't even think about it.

If I'd got the LR I realise I could probably get away with one stop less on a long journey. I could get to my friends' house in Yorkshire on a single charge (it's about 190 miles) whereas I wouldn't risk that in the SR. But having said that, I'd get there on a low SoC, and be trying to get back up on a type 2 charger that only allows the car to charge for four hours. Whereas in the SR, with a stop, I arrived with enough in reserve that it was easy to get up to 100% (and balance) in less than four hours.

I've planned a trip to the south of England (very close to my 430-mile trip of yore, but going on another ~20 miles). I could do it with two quite long stops, but I'd be going pretty low on each leg without much wiggle-room for contingencies so I plan on three stops. According to ABRP my charging time will be just under 2 hours and I'll get to my destination on 10%. (There are chargers 500 yards from my friends' house in Brighton.)

If I'd gone for the LR I could certainly have done it with two stops and one might have been feasible. The faster charging on the ultra-rapids (where they exist) would also cut down on the charging time. So for people who think this is important, shell out the extra £2,500 for that model. I decided I really couldn't justify the expense for so few occasions when I'd need it, and I like the SR battery, it's so simple to take care of.

But for normal use, I never drive more than 150 miles in a day and seldom that. There are CCS chargers all over the landscape, so if I think I'm cutting it a bit fine, ten minutes even on a 50 Kw charger will add enough range to get home. In winter, with a shorter range, I have the option to leave the car on a type 2 in the multi-storey when I'm in Glasgow for the theatre.

I really think it's an unusual driver who won't be able to make any of this work, especially if they go for a longer-range, faster-charging battery. But still we get the nay-saying.

I noticed I was a lot fresher when I arrived at my friend's house in Yorkshire after driving there in the MG4 and stopping for a break, than when I used to do it in one go, or if I needed petrol just fill up and drive on.

Friends have the Ford Mach-e
It can do a fake engine noise via the speakers
It’s utter wa……
I am slowly becoming a bit of a Fan Boy for the new BMW i4 (M40 - for me probs). I notice they have an “engine noise’ Simulation. I am thinking, “it‘s a no from me” , however I am really keen on a test drive, and if that simulation can be turned off (should I find it Wa….) I am quite positive on upgrading my MG4 in a couple of years (a used one this time after second hand EV’s pricing has fallen off a cliff).

Whilst I am set to lose a pretty penny on the MG4 after 3 years, luckily it is no where near how much the Beemer will drop by. I will never buy a brand new car again, 2 - 3 years is the way forward for me from now on.

A quick search suggests the MG4 Trophy will hold around 66% of its sale price after 3 years and BMW i4 will hold around 53%.

I love my Trophy a lot (I know you had a pretty crap experience) had it almost a year and not bored yet. I am sure I can hold out another two years and wait for the BMWi4 to get to a more realistic figure for my budget.

The Trophy was my first dabble in to full EV…. So glad I did :)

You might be being a bit ambitious with your value of a 3 year old Trophy, the GFV for a trophy is just over £17k, after 3 years, according to the MG website. Going on your figures you reckon you will get £21500 for your car.
Considering you can buy 23 plate trophy's for under £28-29k and 72 plates for just over £26.5, I think you might struggle a bit, but you never know.

Could you tell it’s an x power just by driving past? Is there anything else to look for apart from the orange brakes

My mate works for the local BMW dealer, I’ve driven the M40 and have a video of us er…testing it….
What a machine.
We didn’t realise it did noises (and everything changes red) until late in the drive.
It wasn’t an engine noise, I could only liken it to a Star Wars type noise (you can maybe choose)
It was cool as hell.

Nope, probably not. But I feel confident I will not owe anything on it when the time comes (I did pay £4K off at the start, so hopefully I will not be left with a debit after 3 years….but I guess….who knows??).

Just gonna resign myself to paying for the use of it for three years and if I can get a grand or two out of it…. Then happy days.

I am hopeful the BMW i4 will be circa £30k by then, and if so, will buy it used with cash and hopefully keep it for 5 - 7 years.

Anyways, best laid plans n’all that! ?

Be careful, these are predicted future value guesses and could be wrong.

That has made my day!!! That is worth at least £10K of my hard earned :)

I am aware of the loss on a new car. I have done it before, when I could ill afford it to be honest. But I was very keen to get the new MG4 from launch, so I am prepared to write off some significant money for the privilege of having the car for three years.

Now that I have dipped my toe in the EV world, I am very impressed and I should be able to get the funds together for a Used BMW i4 in a couple of years, and if not, will be a very small bit left on finance.

My only wish is that when I get rid of the MG4, I do not have to pay any extra over book price. \

Thanks for your advice / realism ?

The wheels it's the only mg4 with decent alloys

Test drove the Xpower today - very fast and rides very well.
A bit lacking in drama with all that speed though.
The extended range seems a better fit for the chassis and plenty fast enough in real world conditions.
Was going to swap for Xpower in Green. Not sure now.

If it's sanity and good reasons and sensible choices that rule your decisions, the X-Power is not for you.

If it’s Matt Green, that’ll be Xpower

But if it's not matt green, it could still be an X-Power!

Definitely, it's not a great deal brand new and on PCP.
Fine if you intend keeping it and Will be a much better deal used
