Good day, motorists.

I just put a deposit on a 2021 MG5 61kWh.

It's costing much more than I've ever paid for a diseasel but it's the right thing to do. Ex demo from an MG dealer, never been charged at more than 7kW, still has 5 1/2 years warranty.

I'm a bit nervous about having spent all my money but a bit excited. Going to change my Octopus tariff to Go (going to rely on granny charging for now) and trying to sign up for their Electroverse and app. And looking for a real spare wheel.

What else do I need to do?

cheers

Enjoy driving it home from the dealer. Mine was about 100 miles from home and before I was halfway back I decided I never want to drive an ICE vehicle again.

You're doing all the right things, re Octopus, but it could be worth considering some of their other tariffs, depending on your usage pattern. Go is great if you have a regular commute, or you can charge a home battery, but if you driving is more discretionary, then Agile can be even cheaper, if you watch out for the low cost periods. Best of all you sometimes get paid to fill the car up.

(And be careful when you put it in Sport and floor it!)

If it has a full service history you should be able to see the SOH of the battery on each service sheet.

Enjoy ?

My new motor comes with a granny charger which will be fine until it's not.

Should I buy a type2 to type2 for charging elsewhere, I understand slower/cheaper public chargers tend to be untethered?

It's a good insurance. I got caught out once, and had to be AA's home, because I'd assumed my car had a Type 2 included, and then found out it didn't in Mid-Wales. I haven't had to use it since I got it, so regard it as an insurance premium.

Am I right in thinking fast chargers are generally tethered, slow(er) chargers generally need me to provide cable?

Make sure you get a 3phase type2 to type2 cable, not much difference in price but you will be able to ‘slow charge’ a good bit faster on most public chargers (11kW vs 7kW)…

[Edit] above only applies for FL, MK2 models, not the car OP mentioned

Does that apply to PFL models?
