MG4 Software Update Thread

Just sent this to the dealer I bought the car off, ahead of approaching Santander finance with a Satisfactory Quality Complaint. I think reading between the lines, and the fact I'm even sending them such an email in the first place kinda highlights my position.

I am very tired with the car, and not happy at the thought of spending another year and a half plus with the PCP at the rate the car is improving (no where near quick enough).

I will see if they do anything, but I am expecting a fob off, in which case I will take this up with Santander, as at this point, I feel the worst offending MG EV4s are basically faulty on software level, especially as you cannot turn the TJA/LKA off permanently, and I should be able to use a function of the car I've been paid for, radar and lane assisted cruise control were a big part of this for me; as I often do long days, and motorway miles.

After my previous Ioniqs, this car has been a MASSIVE dissapointment, and am distinctly considering just dumping it if I cant get anywhere with the dealer or Santander PCP finance. Maybe give BYD a try, they are chinese too, but the software sounds far less half-baked than MG, and they actually have OTA updates (and a heatpump, which oddly enough matters in the UK winters).

Honestly the false braking and lane fighting are the worst parts though, as they go from annoying to actively dangerous; I've had the car slam brakes on on me now numerous times, because its misjudged a parked vehicle which isn't even in front of me, or with no obvious reason at all.
I am very tired.

Hi there,
I am reaching out to you as directed by MG and Santander regards my EV4 as the original supplying dealer.
I have had no end of issues with the car since purchasing, worst of which have been numerous occasions of dangerous phantom braking sometimes at 30mph or over, or forced car auto steering for no reason which have almost caused crashes on multiple occasions, and have caused great concern to both myself and my wife.

To try and resolve these issues, I have been to local MG branches for software/firmware updates already twice, and am due to go in for a third time tomorrow, and have been in contact with them even more regularly than this because of the issues.

On top of this the issues have been numerous, but not restricted to:
Onboard electronics crashing
Working car chargers refusing to work with the car (I know they're working as I've watched over cars pull up and use them)
Faulty/System error notifications and elements of car being disabled until car is powered down and rebooted.
Infotainment system stalling and crashing, or previously sometimes refusing to produce any volume
Onboard screens failing to boot
Bluetooth regularly disconnecting (it is now rarer after some of the updates but still does this intermittently)
Temperature system sometimes refusing to heat up or cool appropriately and generally seems way off at times.
On top of that, MG's promised OTA software/firmware updates have not materialised.
Efficiency from the car has often been noticeably poor, around 3 miles per KWH.
ECall system faults
Autohold faults

And these are just the ones I can remember right now.

I am reaching the point of having to consider alternatives only a year and a bit into a PCP, which I have never done previously, but this is making me seriously unhappy with the car in a way that I have never been previously, the car has been a horrendous disappointment coming from my previous Hyundai Ioniqs.
My wife now believes the car to be dangerous, and refuses to drive it; and believes I should be able to return the vehicle.

Ideally I'd like to return the car at this point, as I have already been to local MG dealers more times than I can justify, and the issues have not yet been solved. As I stated when I bought the car, I needed something reliable for my workload, and the car has unfortunately just been unreliable and periodically unsafe; the last thing you expect from a new high tech EV, and a absolutely massive disappointment after my previous Hyundai.
Throw in the top the previously promised MG OTA updates have never arrived, and it generally feels like at least the initial version of the EV4 for UK/Europe was half baked and is being abandoned already (I note there has already been a mini-facelift with some tweaks including rear wiper).

It sounds like you have had a terrible time of it with your car, which is a great shame and makes your comments completely understandable. I'm not surprised you want to return it.

I will point a few things though - the inability to turn off LKA and AEB etc... by default is a EuroNCAP requirements for all new cars tested from 2022 onwards. It is not MG's decision. Without this, it isn't possible to score the maximum safety score, the theory is that the car doesn't know who will drive it next and so all defaults should always be to have driver assistance systems on. You'll find other new cars first tested by EuroNCAP from 2022 onwards have exactly the same behaviour.

Now, you can turn off these systems for each journey, and I do so every time. Yes it is a pain, yes MG could make it easier and simpler to turn them off (and yes, some competitors make it easier). Yes, if I could select a stored driver profile with a single button, that would make it even easier. But nonetheless, you can turn these systems off and I'd encourage anyone who finds them irritating / annoying to do exactly that as a "pre-flight" check.

Regarding ACC, this is much better once you've had the relevant car module updates. I now use mine regularly and it is pretty good, not quite as good as competitor's systems but certainly good enough to rely on. Prior to getting these updates, I found it completely unusable.

Yes, getting a dealer to apply the right updates can be a pain. I'm lucky, I complained once and they fixed it straight away.

Good afternoon,

I am new to this forum and have a question I couldn't find an answer to. I have an MG4 Trophy, likely the old 2022 model, because I don't have a rear wiper.
Currently, I am not happy with my MG4. The air conditioning isn't working very well. Sometimes, it doesn't work at all (I have to get out of the car, restart it, and then hope it will work again). Additionally, the Bluetooth connection is very poor. I can barely connect to it.
I have the R24 software, and I am wondering which software version I can upgrade to for the 2022 model. Will an upgrade fix some of my issues?

Thank you!

I know the r49 version at least fixes the Bluetooth. Had it on my old MG4. Now I need an update on my new one as it’s on r40. And has the Bluetooth issue.

Mines going in on Tuesday for a replacement passenger door handle and the updates they didn't do for some reason at the service in March.
I've mentioned that the infotainment screen sometimes goes blank when switching between light and dark modes and that the Bluetooth is terrible so it'll be interesting to see what R number I end up with.
Not impressed. Fitted the new door handle but only did the necessary software updates but the Infotainment software is still on R24.

I'll live with that as I don't use Bluetooth and I'm not overly confident that I won't be swapping problems that I can live with for other more annoying ones.

The courtesy car was an experience. A Fart In A Tin 500. What a gutless hybrid shoebox that needed more gear changes than an award show hostess.

Hi guys, I'm also newb in this topic, could you please clarify what is actual firmwares per models? I see in the discuss that there is two versions of firmwares R4X and R5X. Am I correctly understand that they are fo different versions of MG4?

As you are in Ukraine then we can only assume your software follows the EU versions.

When it comes to software - and by this I mean Infotainment software (as we can't particularly know what are the latest firmwares for different car modules) - then it is important to use the prefix before the R designation:

1100 = SE models (I can't remember what the EU names are - Standard and Comfort?)
1300 = Trophy (Luxury) models

1300R59 is the known latest for the Trophy; 1100R33 is the known latest for the SE. (Therefore the R4X you mention are also 1300R4X for the Trophy).

That doesn't mean you're automatically entitled to receive those versions - just that these are the latest versions.

R59 is not the official latest in the EU. It is R46.
BUT I do not believe Ukraine will follow MG EU policies.

Thank you for this information

I believe Ukraine follows these policies, for example we get official cars from EU market (from Poland if I recall correctly).
