Hello all,

Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question.

I am looking at my first EV and seen one I am interested in second hand. It has a photo of the battery status: 24% / range 32 miles (so I assume 100% would be 133 miles at this ratio)

This seems way off what I assumed would be the capacity (it's a 2022 ZS Trophy EV with 20,000 miles on the clock).

Is this likely pointing to battery not holding as much charge or a reflection of previous driver's driving habits? Just trying to work out if this is pointing to a battery degradation issue (apologies again as I am new to EVs so could be a stupid question!)

Many thanks

do you have a photo of this to post? is this dealer or private sale?

not to worry, all of us been there - there are some threads on buying second hand ZS, search the forum for more info.

this is like mine, 2022 but mine is with 45,000 miles on the clock. at 100% charge, range is estimated at about 200 miles (right now at 47% it shows 114 miles). This depends on how the person drives. If previous driver regularly drove fast on motorway, estimated range would be quite low - like what you see.
On mine, it seems to be that for each 1% charge I get about 2 miles range...

what you want to know is state of health for the battery. Again, search the forum for ODB2 and read on it. Out of curiosity, how much they want for the car? My guess is that anything over £16K might not be worth it ...

Hello!

Thank you for the kind reply.

I thought so, but wondered if it had permanently affected battery capacity, or just affected because it stores usage pattern and if the driver wasn't careful their average is much lower than expected.

Good point about search the forums - I will take a look, thanks!

This is the car I am looking at (and attached photo of battery mentioned). It's through a dealer.

Thanks again!

Reserve it for a £100 or so first thing tomorrow morning or tonight but try to make it refundable deposit depending on the car "report"

The only question is why 2 previous owners and why is yellow warning sign on dashboard...?

Since it's dealers sale, you should be protected from major issues for (I think) 6 months. What you want from them is report on battery health (mine is now on 92%), charging cables, and MG warnty - for that you need annual service by MG garage.

If they don't have annual service proof, that's immediately at least £1,000 deduction as warranty might be void, but, not everything is covered by 7y warranty...

Next, since this is 2022 model, you want to check it can charge at open Tesla chargers (another thread here) and that it supports V2L (using car as a power supply) - my 2022 supports both and if your doesn't, you could maybe get some further discount. Neither of these 2 things is actually crucial for your car to work well...

I'll add to this post as I type

All really good points. I just noticed the warning sign, too. My first concern was the two previous owners, but the battery was my biggest worry. I am sensing a few red flags the more I look at it now. I'm glad I joined this forum now! Thank you for all your advice so far, @fred12345. I will dig a bit more.

Which warning sign/light are you seeing?

The one on the bottom is simply the fan on/off.

I don't see any other warning light. Warning lights would normally be shown on the actual dashboard, not the in car media display.

Yellow triangle above line departure next to speed indicator, that was on dealer website photos...

Also, to add, check new car prices, seen some on carwow with ridiculous £13k off RRP, not even sure if genuine....

My apologies, I don't see the link to the advert, only the 2 pics of media display

Been there myself in April ?. There should be more and more of these around as leases come to an end. Also, some good deals on new cars as many produced and new models coming out shortly (MG S5)
Good luck finding a good one. This shape and size car would not be my first choice but it was absolutely the best value "transition" car from diesel to EV by far.
Nice car despite some complaints you will read here, remember that mostly those in trouble post and those with trouble-free motoring don't, they are busy enjoying their cars ...?

Deleted just in case someone else buys it first, I guess... ??

Screenshot only ? It could be foggy front camera... I had this warning once after washing the car, guess some water left on windscreen blocking the camera behind the rear view mirror

Apologies! I had removed the link, but since put back as I've decided against this particular one. Thank you so much for the advice again. So invaluable!

Just to add, at 24% charge, mine would show about 48 miles range in eco mode but my "consumption/miles per kWh" is about 4.4 average compared to 3.1 of that one so the battery is probably OK....

Do not use the GOM range estimate to make a judgement on battery health.

It's based on recent past driving and anything could have happened.

Ask for SOH percentage from the dealer.
