MG4 Software Update Thread

Hi all,

I had my first MG4 long range trophy car serviced today and also they did software update related to the recall.
I did request them to update entertainment and Telecommunications software updates too but not sure if they did. Can you tell me if these are the latest versions? Sorry I couldn't see forum properly if this has been addressed already but due to issues on replies not visible I thought to post.

Shall I bug them to upgrade if the below is not the latest?

Or shall I give like some of you doing DIY updates?

Quite old version, latest is R59 but it has some issues, the files available are R46
There's at least R40, R46 & R59 versions after yours
It's your decision on whether to update yourself, I wouldn't like to influence either way

Thanks @Rolfe @MG4EVLawyer and @haloweenhamster for your latest info regarding the SW versions and also advise regarding DIY updates.

I think as it's a lease car, I won't take risk and do DIY. But will reach out to dealer. Let's put together a list of dealers who are helping owners for getting latest SW updates.

Might be a very short list. I'll tell you who won't be on it. Macklin Motors Edinburgh West. Obstructive, unhelpful bunch of idiots. Who had better give me my car back tomorrow with R33 on it or I'll probably torch the place.

Wasn't there an R33 for the Trophy too, I remember some confusion between that and R33 (the holy grail) for the SE.

Just checked, and yes it does. I wonder when the next update will,be issued. As mentioned we have 2023Q4, which is not that recent really.

Yes, 30, 33, 40, 46, 59 afaik for Trophy.

That's about what I thought. So @evbull asked for the newest software to be put on his car at service, and it's still on the fifth-most-recent one it came with a year ago.

Are you sure you're not clients of Macklin Motors Edinburgh West?

I had my 5 booked there for the “Tesla” update but I’ve cancelled.

I have never in my life encountered such poor customer service. It's not just that they didn't do what I asked them to do (and did what I asked them not to do), it was the attitude. Hostile, negative, almost judgemental. Why do you want a flat undertray anyway? Well, some are like that and some aren't, it's the luck of the draw. They're just thin plastic, they do break, so what? MG won't do anything, but maybe if you contacted them directly? If you offered to pay for it? (This after me showing them photos of the Australian fix.)

I don't know if R33 has been applied. (I tell them the infotainment still says R13.) Maybe it has been done but the number hasn't come up? (I tell them the HVAC screen is still R13.) We don't do these updates unless we have a complaint from the customer. (I mention the three A4 pages of complaints I sent to them by three different channels.) The MG servers have been down for a week anyway.

The washer jets on the car aren't adjustable. (I point out that there is a section in the manual about how to adjust them.) Shrugged shoulders. (I point out that windscreen washers are a solved problem and there is no excuse for a new car sold in 2023 to have ineffective ones.) Well maybe if you came back with a picture of the problem. (I point out that I brought the car in with the problem absolutely clearly visible on the windscreen, as it had happened on the way there, and I told them that when I handed it over. However since they had washed the car, even though I had told them not to, they had destroyed the evidence.) More shrugged shoulders.

Honestly, I think whatever the condition of the car when I get it back, I won't darken their door again. Even if they've fouled it up yet again, my first recourse will be to go to Galashiels and talk to the guys there about customer service and would they like a new client who might be prepared to recommend them rather than bellyache all over the MGEV forum about how useless they are.

Booking my car in for R33 tomorrow (at last!) and the receptionist girl said there was another new version available, she thought R50. I queried this, was she talking about the Trophy? But she didn't seem sure. Frankly I don't believe it.

could you please check something after you get R33. I have it now and I cannot set the left * on the steering wheel to anything. The menu is there but I cannot select anything. May be you can check it while you are still at the MG centre and if you have the same experience may be they can fix it.

I will try, thanks. I have heard some people say they have had a problem with that. (Currently I can set it to the short-cut menu or Android Auto, and I have it set to Android Auto.)

R33 on the Trophy or the SE? Can you go into the engineering mode and check your SW P/N?
(Tap software version until code entry appears and type 500219). I wonder if they share a version number for that.

I get that, I'm asking about the SW P/N as on my Trophy when this was 68.3.3.9 before (star button problems with R46) 68.4.3.0 after (no star button problems).

Mine works fine ... the same options are available for both buttons. I have though had the left star "forget" its setting a couple of times ... not found a consistent reason for this yet. (I thought it might be doing a 100% + balance charge, but the last one I did last week still retained the setting). ?‍

It may be that they need to reapply the 1100R33 update.

On R13 I had the right hand star forget its settings once or twice. Annoyingly, one of the times it happened was when my friend was driving and I was trying to get her familiar with the controls. She's pressing the button and I'm saying it should work, and it was only when I got home and re-selected the HVAC to the button that it worked again.

Files are here, they say to use a 64GB stick formatted to FAT32 (have to download a program to do it, I used Rufus)
Tbh its just copying the folder & 2 files to the USB stick, plug in either front USB ports (A or C)
Enter eng mode
USB update
AVN then ECU
Doesn't take long
It's a full update so can be loaded over any version
Below is the ECU loading but looks the same as AVN

If anyone has attempted to download any files in the last hour, double check they are complete as files have been reloaded after an accidental deletion
