I've just realised a counter-example. This morning, as the dealership receptionist was sorting out the handover of the courtesy car for me, I happened to remark that the previous courtesy car they'd given me had been an MG3 which was brand new at the time. I think I said something about feeling I had to be extra careful. I didn't personalise the car at all.

The receptionist replied, oh she's very poorly at the moment. Feeling very ouchy. Someone wasn't as careful with her and she's in the body shop at the moment.

That was a petrol car. But the receptionist (who didn't even own the car) had personalised "her" good and proper.

I can imagine petrol heads as elderly gentlemen in "bib 'n' braces" overalls, at a vintage steam rally; "oohing" and "aahing" at the centuries old engineering of a traction engine, longing for the old days when they used to make them like that.

That's always a good one. Although I think the 1p/mile is a bit of a stretch.

5p kWh and 5.5 miles per kWh it seems about right to me.

I also owned an E63 AMG Estate 12 years back (and what a bloody car it was!) one of the highlights of my petrol powered era!

I had to watch but a pointless waste of time and I'm surprised that the lady is a presenter on the fully charged show/everything electric would be on it . I hate petrol loving dinosaurs get with the times and move with the times the electric revolution is here to stay

I drove 22 miles to my dealer this morning, part of it on the A720 Edinburgh bypass, and I was amazed by how many EVs I saw there. At times I had three in sight, close to me, all at once. (So with my car that was four.) And it wasn't the same three cars every time it happened either. Then coming back home, driving into a village that is half a mile long, I passed two Teslas coming in the opposite direction.

Opinions differ. For me, EVs are massively better, no contest. (And yes, I still have working Betamax.)

"Self charging hybrid" is a bit of a nonsense term. They're ICE cars with a bit of a range extender. You can't run them without putting petrol or diesel in them. I think they just put the word "hybrid" in the name to fool people into thinking they're something they're not.

What you have is an electricly assisted internal combustion vehicle, which also charges a battery when it's burning fuel.

Theres no such thing as a self charging hybrid. They make absolutely no sense at all. Extra weight, no benefit at all. ICE is the most expensive way to generate electricity.

Yes, in theory the ICE engine can be run at its most efficient revs and the energy stored to be used when the ICE engine is at its least efficient. In practice, the efficiency of the conversion is a problem and with very small batteries it doesn't make a huge difference, although arguably can reduce emissions in towns.

With a PHEV the idea is "best of both worlds", the ability to run on electric for short distances every day and the ICE engine for maximum range on long journeys.

The downside with both is complexity; you effectively have both powertrains and ancillaries and reliability can be an issue.
