Reliability worry

Thanks to all for positive info.

My job is in the motor trade so I am very aware of car issues.

I am a product manager for turbos and engine components so it says a lot why I’m getting an EV.

People slate Chinese parts but the main amount of car parts sold today are Chinese even the top brands. The main worry for the MG is software rather than hardware for most.
I agree, the hardware is covered by a 7 year warranty hopefully, the software is a completely different issue.

Nothing too unfair if this is complete list.

The MG 7-year warranty for the MG3 hatchback has several exceptions, including:

  • Damage from accidents or external causes
The warranty doesn't cover damage caused by accidents, industrial fallout, airborne contamination, stone chipping, or bird lime.

  • Damage from non-MG parts
The warranty doesn't cover damage caused by non-genuine MG parts, or parts that aren't approved by MG.

  • Damage from lack of maintenance
The warranty doesn't cover damage caused by a lack of maintenance, or by not having the car serviced in accordance with the MG schedule.

  • Damage from competitive driving
The warranty doesn't cover damage caused by racing, rallying, or other competitive driving.

  • Paint defects
The warranty doesn't cover paint defects that aren't caused by defective material or workmanship at the time of manufacture.

  • Private hire and taxi use
For MG petrol vehicles used for private hire or taxi, the warranty is limited to 12 months or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first.

  • Tyres
    The warranty doesn't cover tyres.

The warranty is transferable between owners as long as it hasn't expired

Stupidly enough no I didn’t test drive one. Just liked everything I saw on videos. After having an old car I just wanted something with features my BMW doesn’t even have a cup holder so having an auto with cruise control and camera was luxury to me.

The dealer is showing they are due in about two weeks so should be end of this month.
I had test drive last week, its surprised me, I said to my husband I felt like driving a space ship, felt like flying. Since then I tried other EVs to compare, I tried VW ID3, Honda eny1, nothing compares to the MG4. After comparing and getting overwhelmed, my heart and brain went to MG; I ordered it yesterday. They said it will be around 2 weeks. Fingers crossed.

These forums are an excellent place to come and see what problems you might come across in a particular vehicle but just keep in mind most folks don't come here to sing the praises of their car. I used this and another forum to get a handle on potential issues before buying my MG4 Trophy and I have had no major issue so far 18 months in. I think you'll find if you go on any car forums you'll get mostly negative information I gauged it on how many times an issue was raised and how servere the issue was. There are going to be many people not having any problems at all so most likely will never even be on a forum. If you are seriously thinking about a different vehicle go look for a forum for that vehicle and I think you will see the same, mostly bad points being mentioned. All the best with what ever you decide.

Hello all

Currently waiting on delivery of lease car.

Mg4 trophy my23. The more I read on this car the more I’m thinking of cancelling lease.

From paint issues ripping seats and faults this car looks more and more of a bad choice

What would everyone say knowing how their car has been?
Don’t cancel. You won’t regret it. If you get a glitch as most of us have, book it in with a replacement for a few days, it will be fixed with the ever increasing glitch updates. It’s not a fantastic experience but it is a good one. Charge at low rates at night & gradually you start to realise you have more money in the bank at the end of the month with most of us getting 3.5 to 4 mi/kWh; depends on your electric price, that is between 10p to 20p for every 5 miles driven. It’s quick off the mark, you leave nearly every combustion engine standing at the green light change, even the SE is just 8 seconds to 60mph. The subtle changes dawn on you in the driving if you are going full electric. If changing from another EV. The MG is the best value by a mile. Better range, more extras as standard, but if you don’t cope well with change, you can cancel, but bad luck, you missed out on an opportunity to join us happy MG EV drivers!

The car drives really well and we love it, but there are a number of software bugs which are still not fixed (we have the Trophy version with more systems).

We have had the following faults:
  • AC charging failure: took best part of 4 months to get this fixed, mostly waiting for parts.
  • ePhone SOS keeps failing: numerous updates applied, I think it is now fixed finally.
  • Automatic emergency braking when it shouldn't: dealer says there is no fix, so we switch this off now
  • Rattling boot lid: dealer couldn't fix, so did it myself.
  • ACC: wasn't initially usable, software updates have now fixed this.
  • Driver's footrest failed: replaced after 18 months, not covered by warranty, cost £75.
  • LKA: same as most people, waiting for the final fix, currently turned off.
  • CarPlay: despite many infotainment updates, still has various bugs.
  • Driver's seat: now showing signs of cracking on side bolster, no longer under warranty (12 months only on interior).

We love the car but the warranty/service experience and particularly the difficulty getting software updates to fix problems has put us off having another.

I agree that it is a minority of people having these issues, I still think we got a good one though, there are some lemons that people have had to return.
Question- 5 attempts to get my SOS FIXED, not actually bothered but my dealer is desperate to find out what it is after all the latest updates. Come on once in a blue moon every 200-300 miles then disappears as quickly as a minute, sometimes I don’t notice it!

I had exactly the same, recently seems to be fixed, went in for work at the dealer 21st August and they said there was another new update. Hasn't happened since, although it could still go wrong again, it did before!

I remember one of the issues being the data allowance on the eSIM that it uses, essentially it had run out, but that wasn't the only fix, I think I have had at least 3 module software updates for this too.

Had mine ( motability ) 12 months. I like driving the rocket ship....mrs dont like the pot holes never felt them on old car, cruise control rubbish as it puts lka on dont mind it being adaptive but I always turn it off after 10 seconds. " problems in process of being sorted. Leaking " gearbox seal " & cracks in rear lighting panel. As long as you can charge off road its not a bad choice.

Cruise control does not put LKA on (if you've already turned it off for that drive). If you're getting steering interference then it sounds more like you have TJA engaged rather than simply ACC. You can tell you have TJA engaged as you'll see a steering wheel symbol near the top-left of the driver display.

I test drove an X Power Sept 2023.
Came back with a big grin, so took a deep breath and ordered on the spot. Went with PCP so we had the option of handing it back if things went awry!
The metallic green looked amazing under the showroom lights. My wife liked the volcano orange, but we chose white when we found the other colours were extra chunks of change!
We took delivery in November 2023. The car quickly became our daily driver.
Pro’s.
Easiest car I’ve ever owned to drive; whether in one pedal drive mode in town or reversing up a steep drive.
Overtaking is effortless.
I’m paying 21p/kWh with OVO and charge overnight at home ( loosely trying to keep to the 80/20 % suggestion for battery charge ) which is giving approx 3mile/kWh under most conditions. That’s about £14 for 200 miles.
I charged at a Tesla point for the first time last week which was incredibly easy and no need for an app on my phone! (Not sure if all Tesla points are the same…saw 130kW at max.) Still much cheaper to ‘fill’ than my ZT V8.
Con’s
Software. B4 I set off I have to disable lane keeping assist, front collision assist, driver attention generally. Otherwise they drive me nuts in Cornish country lanes or indeed just squeezing past a parked bus in the town when front collision assist first came to my attention with a massive adrenaline release when the car just stopped dead!
Bluetooth connection is rubbish.
There is a vibration at 60-70. It was very noticeable when new. Seems a bit less after 6000 miles, but still there. Most of my commute however is at non motorway speeds, so not a big issue for me yet.
Insurance was a surprise. ZT 260 was £300. NFU refused to insure me on the EV. Best price I found was Hastings Direct at £550. No road tax so far, but extra insurance cost cancelled out any potential saving.
The car goes in for the one year service soon. I’m very happy overall, but hoping to see software upgrades and an answer on the mild vibration.

Started looking on forums and saw issues
It's a bit like manufacturers going out with pre-prod test mules and doing mega miles. They come back with a few issues and fix them.

But when they go out on sale to several markets, and thousands/ millions are sold, there is potential for heaps more issues.

Some newer cars don't go through this process. I believe the first gen Qashqai was entirely developed using CAD. AFAIAA, no stress or durability testing was done in the real world. But there were issue with this car, notably the boot handle trim that would fall off. Have a look at first gen models 2007-2014 models, many have damaged boot handle trims and some are hanging on with duck tape assisting the process!

Hi , I’m in a MGEV5 .. driving across Ireland on a weekly basis ( 39K done in kilometres in less than a year).. charging is fine car quality is fine. Yes it has ‘Quirks’ .. eg for some reason you need to lock your car to start the charging. If the main battery is low (below 10 %), the 12volt battery can have a bit of a shitfit.. Charging is still fine.. no issues at some point i got 70kwh charging speed ?.
So get the car .. its fine

Best feature, the car follow option with cruise control.. marvellous ? the following the other car in front without me having to think

Thank you. Mine was in on 20th September & they said I had the latest update, & logged the fault with MG technical, who still had standard reply. I will pass on your message to my dealer in Ashford Kent. Once again thank you for taking the trouble to answer.

I’ve had a few minor problems with mine but nothing that meant I couldn’t drive it. The biggest one being the charge port needed replacing but it would still actually charge but was displaying the wrong colours.

My local dealer has been really good so never had any issues getting problems resolved and have always been offered a courtesy car. Others don’t seem so lucky on the dealer front so can recommend Baylis Gloucester if you do have any issues.

It’s my first MG and wasn’t expecting much but I’m really happy with mine and would buy another one.

The dealer makes the difference

I've had my Trophy LR for 15 months now and have had no issues other than Bluetooth not working, which was solved by a software upgrade and the LKA, which is a pain. If you disable it then get up out of the drivers seat to open a gate for example, then sit back down you will find that it has defaulted on. Having said that it is a brilliant car to drive and I find reasons to go out in it. I popped in to my local dealer in Dumfries 3 weeks ago and was offered the chance of upgrading to the Trophy ER in Dynamic Red with £6500 off the top price!?. Snapped his hand off, picking it up on Monday. It was my plan to get one at the end of the PCP agreement next June..that's my excuse? ...they could easily sell double glazing?
As an aside, they have a demo Cyberster in yellow just arrived.
