MG4 Software Update Thread

Long story short: I made the mistake of installing R46 on a standard edition and would like to go back to R33.
I've been reluctant to say it, but I'm not surprised that works.
Glad you were able to revert back as well.

I'm curious though, how did R46 work for you, was it basically functional?
Considering other people are having data issues late in the month, I wouldn't necessarily say that was a software problem yet with the weather or hotspot.

OK - so update on the completely frozen radio on R13 (and Android Auto that doesn't work properly) that went in to the dealer today to be sorted and updated to the latest version and to sort the ACC that slows down far too much in bends.

2.5 hours after dropping off get the call that it is all sorted. They have disconnected the 12V battery and the radio is now working - asked if they have updated the infotainment to R33 to be told that there is no update available!

Asked about the slowing down on ACC to be told they had tested it at 40, 50 and 60 and it was because I had it on setting 3 that was harsh that caused that - I never use regen 3 and always set in on 1 now. I asked if they had plugged the car in and checked if updates were available to be told that they had but there were no updates available and the MG technician wasn't in today (which was the same answer when it went in for the second service 3 months ago) so I'm not convinced they did a proper check.

So a complete waste of a morning and I think all they did was disconnect the battery and then wash the car.

Came home - downloaded R33 and updated it myself - very easy to do especially when this update doesn't even exist according to Drive MG Darlington.

Well that's them done and I won't be going back again there, between MG and totally incompetent dealers they are doing a good job of getting rid of repeat customers.

Where can I download updates?

Just sent this to the dealer I bought the car off, ahead of approaching Santander finance with a Satisfactory Quality Complaint. I think reading between the lines, and the fact I'm even sending them such an email in the first place kinda highlights my position.

I am very tired with the car, and not happy at the thought of spending another year and a half plus with the PCP at the rate the car is improving (no where near quick enough).

I will see if they do anything, but I am expecting a fob off, in which case I will take this up with Santander, as at this point, I feel the worst offending MG EV4s are basically faulty on software level, especially as you cannot turn the TJA/LKA off permanently, and I should be able to use a function of the car I've been paid for, radar and lane assisted cruise control were a big part of this for me; as I often do long days, and motorway miles.

After my previous Ioniqs, this car has been a MASSIVE dissapointment, and am distinctly considering just dumping it if I cant get anywhere with the dealer or Santander PCP finance. Maybe give BYD a try, they are chinese too, but the software sounds far less half-baked than MG, and they actually have OTA updates (and a heatpump, which oddly enough matters in the UK winters).

Honestly the false braking and lane fighting are the worst parts though, as they go from annoying to actively dangerous; I've had the car slam brakes on on me now numerous times, because its misjudged a parked vehicle which isn't even in front of me, or with no obvious reason at all.
I am very tired.

"
Hi there,
I am reaching out to you as directed by MG and Santander regards my EV4 as the original supplying dealer.
I have had no end of issues with the car since purchasing, worst of which have been numerous occasions of dangerous phantom braking sometimes at 30mph or over, or forced car auto steering for no reason which have almost caused crashes on multiple occasions, and have caused great concern to both myself and my wife.

To try and resolve these issues, I have been to local MG branches for software/firmware updates already twice, and am due to go in for a third time tomorrow, and have been in contact with them even more regularly than this because of the issues.

On top of this the issues have been numerous, but not restricted to:
Onboard electronics crashing
Working car chargers refusing to work with the car (I know they're working as I've watched over cars pull up and use them)
Faulty/System error notifications and elements of car being disabled until car is powered down and rebooted.
Infotainment system stalling and crashing, or previously sometimes refusing to produce any volume
Onboard screens failing to boot
Bluetooth regularly disconnecting (it is now rarer after some of the updates but still does this intermittently)
Temperature system sometimes refusing to heat up or cool appropriately and generally seems way off at times.
On top of that, MG's promised OTA software/firmware updates have not materialised.
Efficiency from the car has often been noticeably poor, around 3 miles per KWH.
ECall system faults
Autohold faults

And these are just the ones I can remember right now.

I am reaching the point of having to consider alternatives only a year and a bit into a PCP, which I have never done previously, but this is making me seriously unhappy with the car in a way that I have never been previously, the car has been a horrendous disappointment coming from my previous Hyundai Ioniqs.
My wife now believes the car to be dangerous, and refuses to drive it; and believes I should be able to return the vehicle.

Ideally I'd like to return the car at this point, as I have already been to local MG dealers more times than I can justify, and the issues have not yet been solved. As I stated when I bought the car, I needed something reliable for my workload, and the car has unfortunately just been unreliable and periodically unsafe; the last thing you expect from a new high tech EV, and a absolutely massive disappointment after my previous Hyundai.
Throw in the top the previously promised MG OTA updates have never arrived, and it generally feels like at least the initial version of the EV4 for UK/Europe was half baked and is being abandoned already (I note there has already been a mini-facelift with some tweaks including rear wiper).

Regards

Just to put a bit of an underline on this and the state of the car and the market; my car was taken for inspection a few weeks back, organised via Santander. The car was returned to me within an hour, despite being booked for all day.

I also provided them with all documentation and what had been attempted, and the specialist inspection company came back confirming they were also of the opinion that the car was unsafe and not of acceptable quality. Santander has since confirmed with me after viewing the report that they also agree that the car is unsafe; and they, along with the inspectors, are suitably satisfied that more than reasonable attempts have been made to resolve the issue with MG/MG Franchises, and that the fault was there since the car was initially purchased.

The complaint has been upheld, and the vehicle is proceeding to rejection, and I am now simply waiting for Santander and the original supplying garage to come to an agreement on whether Santander will be dealing with this themselves, or the initial garage will take the vehicle back (it has slightly different outcomes in terms of whether I get any reimbursement/how much, on the finance). I am overdue on them getting back to me, but they've already send me written confirmation they will be proceeding with the rejection; I guess it is just taking some time to get everything hammered out, more than they expected.
Either way, I expect the car to be gone before Christmas; and there is now considerably more competition coming on to the market.

I just wanted to put it out there though, that keep a log, if your car is truly horrendous like mine sometimes can be; and you can prove you've done everything you can to address it, and you bought via PCP finance, there is a way out.

The key thing is having evidence, and having attempted to make the garage aware that things weren't right quickly.

Where can I download updates?
I made this page MG 4 - Downloadable Files please always do everything with caution. We also remember that these updates are mainly cosmetic, UI bug fixes and new features. They do not fix any bugs in other control units that work at a low level.
In my case I have all the firmwares exactly as they came out from MG in 2022, updating to R59 definitely gave me a more stable infotainment and improved UI, but the car is still the same as before and i like it as it is

Great result

I'm pretty much following the same road. My insurance company analysed the case I made, and considered it viable for a legal check by lawyers. They then checked it in and considered the case to be doable. Since I do not have to dump the car if they fix the major issues, they will call for action at MG to repair/update the car first (did that already in May). If MG does not, the car will go back to the dealer. Full payback.

I do not hate the car. But I paid for features that were advertised in the MG folders. I have a right to ask them to make them work. (And some were actually solved together with r59 upgrades).

Let's hope with all your forward momentum they can deliver updates to resolve. You'd think the West being a key market for MG they'd rapidly try and fix the issues with software as I am sure the sensors and compute onboard is sufficient just needs more dial-in and listen to their customers.

However it being a Chinese owned company now who knows!

You would hope, over two years in and still not sorted

I've been reluctant to say it, but I'm not surprised that works.
Glad you were able to revert back as well.

Considering other people are having data issues late in the month, I wouldn't necessarily say that was a software problem yet with the weather or hotspot.

Hello!

I will try to tell you from memory (I did not film, nor take pictures).
  • First, I had to deny activating phase twice before I could further access UI.
  • Then, I had to select my country of residence (which was not needed with R33).
  • I noticed that booting time was reduced and UI felt more responsive.
  • Clock was always restarted (00:00) at startup. I had to wait for a bit for it to be properly set. Meanwhile, UI was white before going back to dark mode.
  • Gear icon stacked on the left was replaced with navigation's one. I found it annoying.
  • Main UI displayed navigation as well as weather panes (always cloudy, never working).
  • Navigation did not work at all, as well as weather and activation.
  • Rear driving UI was different than the one under R33. Of course there was no camera available. Just the car with distances being displayed for each sensor.
  • I think that blinking light noise was louder. Or at least it felt like it.
  • There was a wheel heating icon in air conditioning menu which was useless.
  • I do think that quick lane assist shortcut in top menu was not working
  • Hotspot could be enabled, but my phone indicated that no internet data was available when connected
One in the other, it was not so interesting to use and a waste of screen space for a Standard / Comfort.

So... my Essence 64 (Trophy) that is about two weeks old appears to be on R11, and when I ask the car to check for updates, it reports there is nothing available. Is it likely that different regions are on different R numbers? Or did this car come from the factory with a pretty old version?

R11 seems to be the latest that anyone in Australia gets so far.

I get the feeling that Australian R11 is roughly equivalent to UK R59.

I updated via SIPS before updating to R46, when I updated to R46 and MCU I actually put an older version on
I think that's why they say to update MCU via SIPS so you can see which version the car has & what the latest version is
The MCU affects how the infotainment interacts with the rest of the car for example ⭐ buttons
68.4.7.0 is the latest via SIPS which is the same as R59
68.4.3.0 is R46
68.3.3.9 is R30
I didn't see what R40 was and don't have access to the files
Hi,
i have a new german MG4 Lux since 48h and i got R46 with MCU 68.4.7.0

Is there a list of the latest updates to compare?

MCU is latest
R59 is newer but unless you really dislike LKA I'd personally stay with R46

No real list publicly available but with a vin & subscription you can get an excel sheet like this

So... my Essence 64 (Trophy) that is about two weeks old appears to be on R11, and when I ask the car to check for updates, it reports there is nothing available. Is it likely that different regions are on different R numbers? Or did this car come from the factory with a pretty old version?
the check for updates will always say that unless by some miracle they decide to give us over the air updates
