TLDR
My opinion is 7 out of 10.
A good first effort.
Goes along with my rating of what the car is comfortable with when pushing on.
7 /10ths.
It all gets a bit scrappy and fightable after that.
If, (IF) my car didn't have the vibes (a very much unwanted characteristic) read
FAULT then I think I would be in a very happy place, all told.
Despite taking it up the arris, regards what I paid (35.2) at the time, I still considered that I had, a performance bargain.
This only comes from my position of having paid very much more in the past for some of my 'quick stuff'.
I didn't come to the MG4 X Power wanting efficiency or range.
That would have been nice, but it was not the be all, and end all.
It was never going to manage quick and efficient was it?
Surely only my Tesla could do that.
I just wanted fast, and boy did I get it.
10 out of 10 for 'Fast' No question.
It is, without question, the most accelerative car I have ever owned.
That comes with it a certain thrill, but also a time limit.
You will tire of launch control.
No honestly! You will.
But I have never tired of the ground covering pace and overtaking ability of my land based missile.
That feeling of any overtake you want, at any time you want it, is always on.
Very much like being on a quick motorcycle.
I will never ever tire of that.
That bodes well because of where I live.
Overtakes are a mainstay of countryside living.
There is always something to get by.
I remember right at the start of my ownership (end of Sep 2023) thinking that the materials weren't great, but it was 'only' 35k. What did I expect?
It was only later on did I discover, that the seats were not up to the task of any spirited driving, let alone a bloody track day!
One of the nicest seats I have ever sat on? yes, very comfortable, but no support in the corners when pressing on.
I obviously have the wheel to hang onto too, but my wife has to 'brace' herself in position when the going gets hot.
(Naughty)
I had Recaro buckets in an Audi RS4 Avant I once owned, and they were the best 'Performance Seat' of any of my quick cars.
But what a bugger to get into!
Always a little dance to get in over the high side of the seat.
And an equal shuffle to get out.
That wore thin, real quick.
Beautifully built though.
Nice materials present.
But it was 30k more than the MG so it really should have been.
I've had a glass roof and would not want another, unless it had a full blind.
Would I have another?
Despite my misgivings in other posts.....
Yes I think I would.
What MG need to nail IMO, is the budget price aspect along with a more quality feel to the car.
The software will improve sure, but things they have already done with the likes of the ES5 need to come across to the MG4.
That interior looks better, and has nicer soft touch materials so will feel like a nicer place to be.
The X Power was rushed to a deadline IMO.
That car needed to be paraded at Goodwood 2023, and it shows.
Vibes have always been an issue, seemingly right from the get go, and the lack of any major interior quality over the standard car is really telling.
Let's use some fake alcantara on the seats and doors......
All the doors boss?
No just the fronts, oh and a bit of red stiching.
What about the software?
Yes!
Just knock up a lap timer and g meter, something they will use once, then never look at again.
So would
I do it again?
Well.......It needs to stand out more from the Boggo model no question.
Needs lowering.
Bigger wheels.
Better stock performance rubber.
Quality suspension and brake package.
Nicer interior with better materials.
Quicker, less glitchy software.
More supportive seats.
AND NO BLOODY VIBES MG!
Oh and of course, no more expensive than the outgoing version.
Shouldn't be too much to ask.......should it?
