With the RWD unit I wanted to keep it as together as possible. I’ve bought the car now so it’s this drive unit or bust to be fair. If you ever what to chew the fat or walk me through what you’ve done thus far… I’d appreciate a Teams/Facebook Messenger/Zoom kind of call?
Can you get the MG4 on the road as a daily driver? The problem is, the MG4 is so inter-linked between the various computers, serious mods have to be made to accommodate these features:
Electric power steering, I'm not sure how you would adapt that as a bolt on unit, but a lot of fabrication would be required just for that bit
The brakes virtually "fly by wire" the pedal only sends a signal to the brake module, it determines how much pressure to apply to each wheel via feed back from the wheel speed sensors
The park brake is a separate device, if all else fails, the computer applies the park brake, the rear wheels lock, the drive is cut .... and you slide to a stop and there you stay until something drags you out of the way
Airbags and impact G sensing. The computers ask each other if they "felt that" and where they felt it and how hard it was, then the required airbags deploy, the seatbelt tensioners wind up and lock, the HV battery is isolated, the accident is recorded in the crash module, the 12V battery triggers the annoying beep to get you out of the car, unlocks the doors, the 4 way flashes start up, and these keep going until the 12V battery is drained.
There is a mass of suspension modules and sensors as well.
Everyone of these modules talks to one another as well as the central control modules, if any of them fail to respond with the correct signals, nothing start up.
Worth watching the Porsche 928/ MG3 build, just to see what problems he has had to overcome to get the system to turn on, even though in the start of the series, you get to see how many modules can be disconnected and it still drives
If you do go ahead with the MG4 into a Kombi conversion, I'd imagine we will end up with our own forum type chat site so we have a record of everything we tried, what worked and what didn't, just to save repeating each others trial and error steps
