Say Hello

Hi all, just got my MG4 Trophy long range. Wanted an ev for a while, but also wanted the extra range. So far very happy with car, still finding out all the bits and pieces you can do. My only concerns is the charging. On Octopus intelligent with Ohme charge. Trying not to look at smart meter costs, waiting for first bill to confirm I will not have an horrendous bill 🤞. May have to call for help later if I have problems.

That is one of the reasons this forum exists to offer help and advice to new EV owners like yourself so ask away and welcome onboard.

Taken delivery of the ZS hybrid+ today. First MG, first hybrid, first time with an automatic.
Big shock was insurance, current company doesn’t have it listed, their advice was to cancel my policy and seek insurance elsewhere, broker I contacted had the same problem.

That's often the case when you buy a car that has just launched, the insurers can be slow to add it to their systems.

Good afternoon,
I’m 1 month into my Trophy ER ownership and so far so good. A few issues but for a value car I’m happy. However….. the car was purchased with an ulterior motive… I own a VW T3 Van and have followed many on YouTube putting Tesla running gear in as a conversion. I managed to pick up my MG for £26,500 as it had a massive 6 miles on the clock and was pre registered. You’ve guessed it after my daft idea after 5 years to do a drive train replacement. That said I need technical data to help me with this RWD e conversation. In the UK the rules are you can’t weld anything so it’ll all have to be bolt on/in and removable. Happy to hear any constructive ;) suggestions.

Welcome! There are two or three people doing weird things like repairing crash-damaged cars or cannibalising them for parts for other purposes. You'll fit right in by the sound of it!

I'd recommend using an earlier MG3 EV with the front wheel drive. Drop the motor and gearbox and put the MG3 EV motor between the driveshafts.
Here is a long winded conversion of a Porsche 928 using an MG3 EV as a donor There are a lot of things you can pick up out of the waffle about how to delete certain items and the thing still runs.

I bought a written off MG4 to convert my '74 Kombi ....... too many things have gone pearshaped for me to get a start on it yet, so I keep looking at each of them and formulating new ideas  o_O:ROFLMAO:

With the RWD unit I wanted to keep it as together as possible. I’ve bought the car now so it’s this drive unit or bust to be fair. If you ever what to chew the fat or walk me through what you’ve done thus far… I’d appreciate a Teams/Facebook Messenger/Zoom kind of call?

Can you get the MG4 on the road as a daily driver? The problem is, the MG4 is so inter-linked between the various computers, serious mods have to be made to accommodate these features:

Electric power steering, I'm not sure how you would adapt that as a bolt on unit, but a lot of fabrication would be required just for that bit

The brakes virtually "fly by wire" the pedal only sends a signal to the brake module, it determines how much pressure to apply to each wheel via feed back from the wheel speed sensors

The park brake is a separate device, if all else fails, the computer applies the park brake, the rear wheels lock, the drive is cut .... and you slide to a stop and there you stay until something drags you out of the way

Airbags and impact G sensing. The computers ask each other if they "felt that" and where they felt it and how hard it was, then the required airbags deploy, the seatbelt tensioners wind up and lock, the HV battery is isolated, the accident is recorded in the crash module, the 12V battery triggers the annoying beep to get you out of the car, unlocks the doors, the 4 way flashes start up, and these keep going until the 12V battery is drained.

There is a mass of suspension modules and sensors as well.

Everyone of these modules talks to one another as well as the central control modules, if any of them fail to respond with the correct signals, nothing start up.

Worth watching the Porsche 928/ MG3 build, just to see what problems he has had to overcome to get the system to turn on, even though in the start of the series, you get to see how many modules can be disconnected and it still drives

If you do go ahead with the MG4 into a Kombi conversion, I'd imagine we will end up with our own forum type chat site so we have a record of everything we tried, what worked and what didn't, just to save repeating each others trial and error steps

This build is using an MG ZS, not an MG3.

Well had car for about 3 weeks, no problems with car, but charging !!! I am on octopus intelligent. As soon as I plug in the charger it starts to charge, I have read various forums, spoken to octopus about this problem, with no joy. At the moment I have the system set so that I have to approve plug in; to make sure I use only cheap charging I have to set the charge to finish at 0530 and to start I have to approve the plug in. Am I being stupid or is this a normal type of problem? Sorry about the long message, but I just want to plug in and forget it.
