MG ZS EV 12V Battery

But what if the battery spec doesn't match exactly or the spec matches but the performance of battery differs in reality?
You should replace like for like, with appropriate specifications... or not do it yourself if in any doubt.

There are quite a few posts with replacement batteries, it might help finding one for your car if you want upgrade battery

Hi, when you fitted your replacement battery did you have any issues with codes when you connected your new one?
No, no problems, next start-up was perfectly normal. I did wonder if the radio might need a reset code but was reassured by the fact that, as Fred12345 mentioned, folks are regularly advised to disconnect the battery negative to reset the electronics and no-one has reported any problems from doing this.

Thank you for your comprehensive comments.
I had the 12V battery tested by an independent electrician without cost .... it read 12.6 which increased after a 1.5 mile drive.
The car hopefully lives another day without spending .... a national supplier with a local outlet quoted £238 for a replacement battery.
Many thanks.
My ZS has just turned three years old and during this cold weather I get the same message as you did when I open the doors, I am not particularly worried about it as I have a smart charger which I can connect during the cold spells. When the time comes to replace it I will purchase and install it myself.

Hi, whilst waiting for my replacement battery I travelled 4 miles, parked up, shopped and returned to the car. On opening the drivers door the message in photo 2 of my post appeared with the word "immediately" added to it. The replacement battery is due to be delivered this afternoon.
😃

Hi all

After 4 years and 3 months of ownership along with 92,000 miles on the odometer, my 12V battery also died. I had no pre-alert to suggest it's on its way out.

I purchased an AGM battery and replaced myself under 5 mins. Car started immediately and with zero fault codes. Feel free to message if you need help.

From memory, the AGM batteries were made for frequent high current discharges, which is what you get in newer ICE cars, that have the stop/start technology.

I don't see any benefit in buying a more expensive AGM battery for the ZS EV, because there is not any high current draws like the starter motor on an ICE car.

Heck, Tesla and other car manufacturers even switched over to a MUCH smaller Li-Ion "12V" battery to save a bit of weight in their cars. These do run at about 15-16 volts, but that's not a problem, and instead of being 60Ah or even 90Ah they only fit a 7Ah battery.

Difference being of course, that the Tesla monitors the LV battery and recharge it, even when the car is "off".

Will be interesting to see if MG will go this route also, when they reveal the replacement for the ZS EV, next year.

Car manufacturers have been talking for the longest time about going to 48V, this would save quite a bit of weight because the wires could be made a lot thinner in the wiring harness.

Ideally they should just drop the LV battery alltogether and run everything off of the HV battery, but that would make a whole lot of other problems. (400V is easily deadly if you touch wires, whereas 12 and 48 volt is not)

One of the main issues is that there is huge manufacturing capacity for all ancillary car items such as blower motors, wiper motors, horns, heated seats etc that are all there at cheap prices at 12V. Probably no change foreseeable in that department.
