Hi there MG4 owners, I am Dave from Bristol and have owned a standard range MG4 for over 2 years with very little trouble, but the other day I got in the car and the battery power bar which is normally green lit up orange. is there a reason for this. many thanks Dave.

There must be a (true) reason for it to turn orange, though.

I mean, you wouldn't program an option for it to turn orange at some stage, unless it's for a particular reason.

There was a "fact" going around on the Australian MG4 Owners facebook page that it had something to do with the 12V battery recharging, but I'm not convinced by that.

The one time I had it happen, I think I got the start up sequence wrong. It stayed orange until I finished a short drive and was back to green the next time I started up.

It is believed the battery power bar goes green then amber then red to denote concern about the amount of energy left. Posters have reported colours changing at various levels. I have never seen a colour change in my Trophy down to 10%.

See search results below:

This is supposed to be a traffic light system with green down to 40% , amber down to 15% and then red. However this has never worked on the MG4 apart from these random amber occurrences. It's another example of the software being flaky.

Where are you getting those figures from? Or have you just made an educated assessment?

What I have experienced in my car is green down to 9%, amber down to 5%, and red below 5%.

I've seen amber on a low state of charge on my car, but there is most definitely also a bug where the indicator changes colour for no good reason.

Edit: Some more reading on the subject;

I had the same thing happen on my SE LR but only once never happened again just a bug I think.

Happens on mine if the weather is exceptionally cold (as recently) it has never changed colour depending on charge left. I ran mine down to 8% (gulp) the other day and the bar was still green.

What software version are you on? (1100R38 is the latest).
R21 I think, really old.

Back in 2023, my theory was the HV battery needs a equalisation charging
But I couldn't confirm that...

In 2024 I saw (twice) that the bar went amber/orange at 9% SoC and lower, then red at 4% SoC and lower. So, working as was (probably) intended. ;)

I know the bar colour is somewhat pointless when there's so little bar to see. However the Battery icon on the driver display also changes colour at the same time, and that icon is always the same size. :)

I just had to finally register and post this because of how absurd this is.
How can I possibly get home with only 96% remaining 🤣

Mine just went amber with a warning to charge the battery at 12%. The voice has been saying “battery low, please charge soon” since 21% soc though.

Edit; just sitting stationary waiting for the missus to run an errand and pressing buttons, but I didn’t realise you can read warning messages by going to the tyre pressure page and then scrolling down. I’ve read somewhere someone was frustrated with not being able to read messages after they’ve popped up briefly.
