MG4 Trophy ER
Hi,

Took delivery last week of my MG4 Trophy Extended Range and have found a number of issues that I'm trying to understand are maybe me, or maybe the car.

Most obvious issue is a significant rumbling / vibration about about 60MPH. At 55 the cabin is pretty silent and smooth, but as speed increases a definite vibration begins and is significant to be uncomfortable to drive with above 65MPH. I can feel the vibration through the car itself, and in the steering - although it doesn't feel like a steering wobble - the steering will is transmitting the same vibration the rest of the car feels. I test drove 3 variants before I purchased and none of them had this noise.
I've contacted the dealer and they're having the car back next week to look into it. I saw there is a long thread which has been running for some time about rumbling (MG4 Rumbling and vibration) but it doesn't seem to reach any specific conclusions.

My radio keeps cutting out - It will come on initially and after about 30s it will cut off. The display shows the radio is still tuned (The program info will change, etc). The only reliable way to get the sound back is to change the source (e.g. to USB) and change back to radio. The cut off seems to be mainly when I start listening - If I keep turning it back on, eventually it stabilises and then will play for the rest of the journey.

'Emergency' indicators ? I've noticed at various times the indicators rapidly flashing - like you see cars do under harsh breaking. But I've seen this even when stationary in traffic. I thought I was going mad (because it doesn't happen for long and the orange 'blind spot' warning is pretty close to the wing mirror mounted indicator) but my wife has noticed it too. Is this some warning system to other cars based on their movements? One occasion we thought it might be due to a van that was very close (in an adjacent lane) and travelling much faster as we were in traffic. But on another I was stationary at traffic lights and surrounded by stationary traffic.

Warnings at startup. I often get 'ACC not available' when I first start out - Is this normal? In the early morning I also get, shortly after setting off, a series of 'not available' warnings about ACC, speed limit recognition, lane keeping - Does this imply something wrong with the cameras? Seems to be particular to cold mornings so I wondered if there is a condensation issue. Or as these systems are reliant on cameras, do I need to regularly clean cameras?

Sorry for the long post.

In case it's relevant for the radio issue the software versions are
Entertainment - SW113-29176-1300R30
Telecommunication - 1.04.001.z02
ISA Map - EU_BL_20231120

I've got a 24 plate extended range UK and have not experienced any of those issues you are having. My radio doesnt always start up by itself and can need either the play/ pause pushed or chage to USB and back but once it's on it stays on.

Is it a new car? R30 software wise is very old and some of your issues could be solved by software updates. Good luck with your dealer. Good service from MG dealers can be very hit and miss.

Myself and some others had this from new, but it faded over the first 500 miles. If yours follows that pattern, it is likely to be flat spots on the tyres caused by a long period in storage or shipping (6 months sitting at the docks for mine).

Maybe, or maybe not. The key is what numbers follow the SWI part ... if it's SWI68 then you are indeed correct, but if it's SWI131 or similar then R30 is indeed the latest (I believe).

This is a setting in the menu you can change. It is the rear collision warning, and as standard it is set to warn traffic coming up to you, but I too found the system too nervous and often flashing for no reason. It is a setting you can turn off, and one of the few that remains off so that’s nice. I don’t know exactly where the setting is but it will probably be in the safety section of the car settings, or maybe MG Pilot.

Friends of mine have just taken delivery of a new Trophy and have the same problem. I tried the switching to other sources but that didn't change anything. I had to reboot the Infotainment screen to get the radio back.

I think their software version is the same. I saw the 1300R30 but didn't check the first part. They have other issues too so it's going back to the dealer next week.

I too have a trophy ER, bought new last December.
I've had many of these problems too (and more besides), booked it into local dealer mid January for a fault with the heated seats, earliest they could manage was 10th March, but in the interim more problems have arisen including radio crashing, losing presets, various warnings on startup or sometimes randomly whilst driving, main display sometimes black and non functioning. Sometimes it stops the motor when I remove the seatbelt to reverse into the drive, sometimes it doersn't...
It's such a shame, and appears to be mainly software based.
It drives nicely, is comfortable on longer journeys, look nice- I really do like many things about it, but there's just too many problems, too early on and I really don't see me keeping it for long.

I stand corrected. Siteguru knows more than me. Listen to them 😀
I looked around the software thread and got excited when I saw a post from siteguru saying 1300R63 was latest and it included a fix to the temperature settings - thought it might stop me needing to set the heating to 26° to keep warm.

I am on SWI113 SWI133. Sounds like I am on the latest version.

How do the version numbers work? I guess the Rxx is a release which increments. Is the SWI indicative of the model/range so I should always look at SWI113 information for fixes?

If there are fixes in the SWI68 releases, are they likely to be in future updates to SWI113 SWI133?

------
Edit to correct version number - I cannot read properly  .
The software update thread is huge and easy to get lost in. But it sounds like there may be some control system updates - dealer has noted they will apply SCO77 when it goes it so there is that.

Thank you for this. I’ve had this happen a number of times and didn’t know what setting it was to turn off. Will do that today!

I would leave that on because that flases when ur hard braking and when a car is cominh in your blind spot.
Oh that’s interesting. The blind spot lights on the mirrors seem to do a good job; there isn’t a specific setting to turn off the flashing indicators for when the vehicle is stationary, or when another vehicle is close (but you know it is there)?

No either on ir off , i switched off yhe reverse emergency braking but i use car as taxi so was annoying braking with customers in

My blind spot still works and I have this setting turned off to stop the flashing lights when stationary. Can’t tell you if the brake lights flash when making an emergency stop though.

Mine the hazzarx lights flash not brake light
Oh I see. I might be able to test that one day.

Quick question that’s unrelated by the way, did you notice any discrepancy in your speedometer when you changed your tyre size? We were talking about that a while ago and someone said you had different size tyres on your MG4.

I purchased a ER trophy last November. When I checked with the salesman if all the software updates had been done, yes all up to date, no it wasn't. That frankly is bullshit, MG dealerships do not get paid to do software updates on delivery, your car could be 12 months old. Check in the glovebox, the manifest should give you the build date. A software update should fix the most of the problems I would guess, make sure that is the first thing they check. It is telling of MG customer service that they wait for the customer to report issues then guess what, the MG dealership then gets paid to do the software update. That is why so many teething issues are reported with new vehicles and hence poor reliability scores. Having said all that, I love the car, it is comfortable, fast and economical (4.2 mpkw) through the winter. Use 1 pedal driving for non motorways. Good luck.
