New MG4 Owner 😊

A horrifying thought.

Totally agree! And, as far as I am concerned (as opposed to those who are hell-bent on creating machines to run our lives for us), 'self' should still only properly refer to a humanoid, not an automaton, as they aren't beings - even an MG car - thus this can only refer to the driver, so 'self-drive' (note the corrective added hyphen) can only refer to the driver as being in 'Full' control. QED - or not, as you wish!

I think FSD is a great development. Already been around in rail systems for a couple of decades (Copenhagen). Many will shout shock horror as they did with ABS, traction control cruise control etc, etc. Bring it on, it removes drink/drug driving risks, use of phones, sudden health event risks, tiredness risks, speeding etc which all cause the the majority of accidents today.

Yeah I could think of a few stretches of road I'd happily let the car do the boring work, provided of course it can, but that's a different conversation.

It's going to be the future anyway, it will safe lives at the bottom line, so it will be mandated eventually. This past year (2024) WA has seen the most road fatalities (186) since 2016 (195) and if you look at the most common causes (data for 2023) the top three are speed, fatigue, and inattention. All three areas that would benefit from FSD.

On a personal level, I do hope FSD would be optional, so I can still enjoy a nice drive when I want to, but I'm sure alcoholics wished they were allowed to drink and drive so...

Today, there are a few drivers who drive exactly to the rules or just below ( just in case ) who act like regulating policemen by making sure that everyone else follows their lead. If anyone attempts to overtake they will pull out to the centre line to scupper that manoeuvre , so they are aware of the traffic behind them.
They are noticeable by the amount of clear road ahead of themselves and the long line of impatient ( normal ) drivers behind them who drive within their capabilities with social acceptability and responsibility if not exactly to prescribed all encompassing rules.
FSD will by default will increase the number of the relatively few , and it would only need a small percentage of cars on the road of this type to nullify the advantages of freedom of choice as we will be stuck in lines of follow my leader traffic.
Some of the already present system do a similar job and could be regarded as social training devices for when the great utopian dream arrives. Acceptance is defeat. :(

Guess I'll be stuck driving cars no older than we have now for the foreseeable then. if I want to be driven somewhere I'll get a taxi (human controlled). Failing that its time to get a motorcycle.

Thanks. It is a shame if it is locked in by Euro NCAP as there seems to be a good case that LKA is not really helpful on UK roads and actually a negative.
Make the best of it and use Alert mode only. If you get nervous from the sound, disable it. That way it only gives you a vibe in the steering wheel. It will not pull the steering wheel.
