New MG4 Owner 😊

it’s great to hear so many people loving their 4. I seem to have bought lemon 4 weeks ago and MG are currently engaged in trying to make it work properly. Your positive comments give me hope that one day I might love this albatross.
The handling and drive seem good but all my auxiliary functions randomly turn themselves off and only rarely turn themselves back on (speed recognition, collision avoidance, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, radio etc). Makes every drive a magical mystery tour!

have you seen this thread? Might have something for you to try as well =)

Welcome mate, you might find LKA isn't so bad for you after driving the car for a while, a lot of people here never bother turning it off. Software updates have made the system a lot better, and hopefully this trend continues in the future.
Agree 100%, it’s not perfect but better than it was originally. Until FSD we can make do.

For people like myself trained in metrology it can only mean Full Scale Deflection. :ROFLMAO:

Welcome from Australia, you’ve bought well and after my 15 mths driving the car it’s great.
LKA is a point of complaint that I believe is unjustified. With all the electronics and software in cars these days it is too easy to become complacent about your driving, LKA exists (for me) to keep my concentration of guiding 1700kgs of metal safely along the road. I’ve grown used to the occasional pull on the wheel drawing me back to the task at hand.

I honestly cannot believe you meant to say that ... I've been driving for 62 years without any significant accidents, and have never felt the need to employ a robot to guide me safely. If concentration eludes, then perhaps stop and rest? ... sorry to lecture - put it down to age!

Not in my mind ... the TA didn't need it; the Midget didn't need it, and neither does the EV - in my mind the most dangerous 'safety' feature ever.
With the amount of people that can’t seem to keep it in their lane, I think this software is a great addition to many cars. Do I like a car that does things by itself? Not necessarily, but like other aspects of EV driving I consider it something one needs to get accustomed to.

It’s a bit like walking alone VS walking with a dog. When you walk alone (a car with no safety features) you know what your plan is and that’s that. When you walk with a dog (the car with safety features), you have this thing with you that also sees things and may react to them, so now you need to take that into account on your walk.

I hate it when cars cut me off because I worry my car will do an emergency stop. However, I was impressed when the car spotted someone seemingly stepping out into the road from behind a bus stop (while I was focused on, or rather distracted by, the car next to me drifting into my lane) and emergency braking to safe a life.

I believe the MG4 needs tweaking and updates to get better at this stuff, but I also believe that sometimes people are just unable to accept their driving isn’t as good as they think, and they struggle with a car correcting them.

I have owned my MG 4 for 15 months & 21,000km & when I first got it turned the LKA off every time (except when I forgot). I regularly drive about 100km on the Freeway at 110kmh. It is the first car I have owned with LKA.

I looked at a number of motoring forums of various brands of new vehicles and there was always a thread or often several about how the LKA was awful or the car was trying to kill the driver etc. LKA is there because motoring safety authorities have deemed it to be a function that will enhance safety even though it feels intrusive to many people.

The fact that many of us have been driving safely for 50 years or even more is irrelevant to the full array of car crash statistics that are gathered, resulting in functions being introduced help prevent or reduce these.

When I learned to drive, seat belts were unheard of. Now there are standards and safety ratings for everything and NCAP (ANCAP in Australia) provides 0 to 5 stars for safety ratings. Believe it or not some cars have got zero for their initial test. To get the top level of 5 stars all of the rating safety functions that are there must be on by default when the car is started. Any vehicle that can have the feature turned off permanently will fail to gain the 5 star rating.

Over the past 15 months I slowly stopped turning LKA off and now never turn it off on the freeway. What it did was encourage me to drive more accurately and I rarely get a beep or steering nudge now.

I do turn it off on usually unmarked or partially marked country roads as it can interpret some road edges or short lengths of painted lines as a lane.

I have also had sudden braking when a person walked out between 2 cars & it thought I would hit them, though in reality the person turned to get in their own parked car & also the rear sudden stop when reversing out of a car park when another car, person or bike was coming past. It originally scared the crap out of me until I realised the car is doing the right thing.

from an electrical tech point of view it's also full scale deflection, that's when the needle hits the end stop.

I have no objection to a car correcting me. My surf wagon does it on occasion, but it's subtle and gentle about it, at least on metro roads.
I try to remember to turn it off in the bush. Being a euro car the button is on the passengers side, so leaning over to turn it off isn't safe, but at least it has a button.
The MG on the other hand, is just much too rough and clunky, I hate it from a design point of view, it just wasn't ready to be released into the wild.
Like others, I'm still capable of finding my own line on the road, if I start to loose that ability, it's probably time to hand in my license.

Hi Everybody, I am a brand new MG4 owner (and first time EV owner). Love the car so far apart from the Lane Keep Assist and having to turn it off all the time. Thanks for all the previous threads and the tips and advice in them, interesting to read.
I wanted an MG in the Metro/Maestro/Montego years but never got round to getting one. Should I even admit that? But I guess it shows my age. But very happy to have an electric MG now.
I wonder if MG Motor will ever give us the option to turn the lane keep assist thingy off once and for all?
I do one day in my car doing deliveries (a volunteering role) lane assist jumps on the second you open the door even if you've only stepped out for a few seconds. It's so annoying. I will never buy another MG. It ruins the car for me. The only thing lane assist does it to try & nudge you into the 3Ps - people, potholes & parked cars - it's so dangerous. And as for intelligent speed setting it's virtually clueless about what speed limit it's in. A great car ruined by it's dreadful software. Can't wait to get rid of it. Oh & it anchored it's brakes in a car park for no reason causing the driver behind me to bump into me. Thanks for the dents MG software!

Thanks. It is a shame if it is locked in by Euro NCAP as there seems to be a good case that LKA is not really helpful on UK roads and actually a negative.
Here in SW France, we have many fairly narrow roads where LKA is extremely unhelpful. I have become used to turning off these three, every time I get in the car.
Overspeed Warning
Speed Limit Change Audible Warning
Lane Departure Assist
For me, I find the above "safety" features don't work for me. Having said that, my wife (also a driver for 40+ years with no accidents), just gets in and drives as she's rarely above the speed limit and happy about the warnings ! :-)

Good on her, just gets on with it. 😉🙂👍

About 90% of my driving nowadays is to and from and around SW France and I can concur fully with what you say. The French are particularly good/bad at painting white lines all over even the tiniest of roads, which drives the LKA barmy.
Good on her, just gets on with it, instead of constantly, moaning.

That is both unfair and impolite. Everyone is entitled to express their opinions. The OE was asking for comments (albeit this LKA subject has taken it rather off-piste - but that is largely due to the strength of opinion and wide diversity of views about it). I would personally add also the front collision braking, which has been equally dangerous at times when it misinterprets a situation.

Why is it unfair and impolite. You, yourself
dont like it and think it's unnecessary. So I presume you turn it off. Fair enough. Some don't. You say everyone's entitled to express their opinions and I totally agree. I was just expressing mine. 🙂👍

As you say, everyone is entitled to express their opinion but their is no need to belittle other members whilst doing so. Concern about imposed "driver aids" must be one of the most consistent gripes aired here so a lot of people share that view.

Fair enough. could've worded it better.
Wasn't my intention to "belittle" anyone.
🙂👍
