Hi folks.

I’ve had my MG5 EV LR for three weeks and I’m rather pleased with it. But I often get a warning on the dash which says ‘conditional speed limit detected’ followed by a yellow warning triangle. It seems to come on randomly. I’ve been through the menus and turned off Speed limit detection but still comes up. The book doesn’t really explain what it really is, why it comes on and if it’s a fault or a feature? It does go off after a bit.

Can any helpful soul shed some light on this please.
Thanks.

Yeah, it's basically saying that it has seen a speed limit sign with some text underneath, it's your responsibility to read the text as the system can't. The irony is that if you hadn't been distracted by the bong and the warning you would have seen the sign...

Even with ISA off it still reads the speed signs and displays them on the dash. To be honest though, ISA is a bit of a waste of space at the moment anyway.

My mild annoyance with it is national speed limit signs, especially on dual carriage or motorway - car thinks that means 60 mph (which is fair enough) and shows the warning (which you have to scroll left or right to see) until the next limit sign.

ISA? Is that Speed Assistance? Appreciate the My Responsibility part of your reply and agree 100% with that statement. I am an Advanced Motorist, observer and taking the Masters course therefore road safety and appropriate speed is top of the list. To add to all this also, the Conditional Speed limit message has come up on some occasions when I’ve been slowing down on a motorway slip road doing under the speed limit. I’ve even had this message pop up while following another vehicle doing 10mph under the speed limit (doing 30 in a 40 limit at the time).
I’ve also found that it can display the wrong speed limit on dash (often lower) and correct one on the Sat Nav. Just makes no sense.

There was chatter on the ZS forum that the warning might be as a result of data in the mapping software - current when it was produced, out of date quickly. Certainly I get this warning on a particular stretch of road every time time I drive it, regardless of conditions, speed, etc.

By the way - wasn't having a go here - just quoting that as it's the reason given in the manual as to why this message pops up! (and pointing out that the pop up message is what's actually preventing this!).

The message pops up regardless of your speed (be it above or below the limit). It does seem a bit random but does appear at the same place on my drive. Yes, going onto or off motorways does seem to be a common one. not sure exactly which signs are triggering this though.

Yeah - the bit that reads the speed limits is pretty poor. It picks up road signs for turn offs and side roads, and often misses ones at the end of the street when you turn into it, and on the 5LR doesn't understand 20 signs either.

ISA (Intelligent Speed Assist) uses that data to set the speed limiter on the car, but it's not really much use. Half the time it doesn't know the speed limit or resets it because of a junction. Half the time when it DOES have a speed limit, it's wrong as it picked up a sign from a side road, and in the 5LR the ISA just throws an error and gives up altogether (on my sample size of 2) whenever it sees a '20' sign.

Sat nav is completely separate to the 'pilot' suite. Whilst 'pilot' uses the camera to pick up the signs, the sat nav just has road speeds stored in its database, (hence the differences).

From the manual:
"
When the speed limit information function or
intelligent speed assist function is enabled, and the front
view camera detects a speed limit sign with text message
below, the warning lamp illuminates yellow to remind
the driver to recognise the text message by themselves.
The camera cannot recognise the text messages provided
below the speed limit sign, such as auxiliary lane, 100mls
ahead, school section, 7:00-10:00. The camera will
recognise the speed limit sign with text messages as a
normal speed limit sign. The driver is required to make
correct judgement according to the text message."

This does suggest you can just turn the speed info system off, but that might be one of those settings that resets every time you start the car. It also suggests thought that it's just a warning lamp, not a full screen message...!
