It.s a long way to ............
Hello all,
I'm brand new to this so be patient and I hope you can educate me about EVs.
I'm collecting a brand new MG5 exclusive long range at the end of March via Motability cars. As I've read on this site, I've done lots of research about EVs in the last 3 months, prior to ordering one and it does seem to be the best estate available at the moment for the price.
I know that the official 250 mile range is not the "real world" figure and wondered what members are finding realistically. I average 100 miles weekly so I would be charging it weekly or even fortnightly (I presume). However, I have a wedding to attend in Windermere in October.
Has anyone experienced a motorway drive of 120+ miles in cold, possibly wet, circumstances which use up heating, aircon, radio, phone etc and how was the range in those conditions?
Thanks again
Steve

Steve you have no worries. I drive a standard range model and worst case scenario (freezing temps) I get 150 to 160 miles range. In summer I can get 220 miles. Yours will go further than that easily, especially if you drive sensibly.
However, bear in mind that on a long trip you will want to charge somewhere out and about. By the time your wedding event comes up you'll be well used to the car and will know how and where to charge it while on the road.
Range is not an issue.

EV Database shows pretty realistic figures - but 120+ miles should be no worries at motorway speeds - depending on where you're staying and availability of charger at hotel, etc - you could top up to 80% or so when close to destination rather than search for one the next day.

According to ZapMap, Windemere itself has a Booths supermarket which all tend to have Osprey units - I've seen these recommended and I'd try that as four devices there - same at Kendal too.

Thanks Biffo,
I'd already seen the Booth's Instavolt chargers which I prefer as they can be paid directly with a debit card. It's only 3 miles form the hotel I'd be staying at so could drop the wife off to relax in the room while I go to charge the car and do come reading or retail therapy!!

You should be fine with Instavolt units. If you get the app you can get a £5 credit with my referral below?

Hi
I've just signed up to Instavolt and it asks for credit card details. Is it possible to pay with a debit card? I thought you just pulled up, connected up and swiped a debit card?

Thanks for that 5teep. As for charging, who do you find best when on a long trip?
Most of my charging will obviously be at home.
I can't answer that, I have no idea where you live and if it's not where I live I still wouldn't have a clue :)

Best advice is to download Plugshare and Zapmap apps onto your phone then you can plan the route and see what chargers are nearby. Look at the comments for each and see if they have issues.

/edit oops, Yes I do, Stoke on Trent as it says under your avatar. Still have no clue though sorry )

If the charger you go to has contactless payment on it, then yes you can use a debit card. Eventually all will offer this but atmo, not all do.

Good link Biffo, very informative Thx

I've driven from Lymm Truckstop to Oxford, approx 150 miles in one go, in winter with heating on at night at motorway speeds (av. 60mph), starting at 95% battery and got back with about 30% left.

I have either used an RFID card or the app to start a charge.
You should be able to add a debit card to the app, mine is on my bank details.

Hi Steve,
I have had a long range for two months now, the longest journey I have done was 125 miles to Edinburgh and back from North West of Glasgow, this is mostly Motorway, except for about 10 miles. I did this on the most despicable day in early January, rain and sleet all the way there, slightly better on the way back, I had no issues using heater and lights as if it was an ICE car, wouldn’t want to do otherwise. If my memory recalls I was down to 38% by the time we got home. Hope you enjoy the car as much as I do, I would suggest you use either ZAP or ABRP apps to help you locate good charging points when you venture to the Lakes.?

As for charging I've always managed to just use contactless card at point of charging, not got any prepaid cards or plans. Best piece of advice I have is plan your charge stops (and then plan a backup charge stop) in case of heavy useage. I was travelling over Christmas break and it was busy, very busy. Oh and forget the Ecotricity chargers at Keele service station on the M6, they don't work (or didn't when I was there). Use Zapmap to get latest info on whether chargers are working or not, it's pretty good at spotting fubar chargers, like this one near me!

Thank you all so much for your advice and experience.
I'm sure I'll have lots more questions in the next few months.
Don't forget to look back through previous threads for information or do a search (top right corner) as many things have already been covered in good detail and will give you a head start.

Yes you can just tap the contactless but if you use the app it reports back the progress of the charge which is handy. InstaVolt then chargers you at Mid Night. Which for me for some reason that tiggers my bank to block my card as they think it’s fraud - and have to answer a few text messages the next day to get it unblocked.

Just completed a trip back from Liverpool to Maidstone only last night. My longest trip in the MG5LR No issues with range and changing. Rugby services was good. In fact my bladder range is far lower then the vehicle range! Started from Liverpool with 82%. Got to Rugby with 18%. Stopped for 45 mins (plenty of time for a break, good and coffee) and left Rugby with 88% and got home with 22%. Very happy with that.
