I’ve been a MG ZS EV owner for all of 2 days, but it feels like a lifetime. I did do my research and read about the crazy alerts and other ‘minor, annoyances, but thought to myself, how bad can it be?

I now know the answer ?

My introduction to the insanely annoying CLANG-CLANG sound, which I’ve already started hearing in my sleep, was via the lane assistance function. No problem, I thought, I know how to turn that function off. But the twisted evil designers at MG saw that coming, and now I get CLANG-CLANG to remind me that I switched off the primary source of the CLANG-CLANG. How often, you ask? EVERY TIME I SWITCH THE CAR ON FOR THE REST OF MY (probably short-lived) OWNERSHIP.

Another key source of the CLANG-CLANG has something to do with ‘conditional speed limit ahead’ or something similar. This one seems to be based on chaos theory, as it can crop up pretty much anytime e.g. this morning it came on when I was approaching a roundabout in town, and was accompanied by a 70mph speed recommendation, which would’ve made life interesting had I observed it.

Keen to ensure we don’t become too dependent on the CLANG-CLANG, our friends at MG have been kind enough to also furnish us with the beautifully melodic BEEP-BEEP-BEEP. This bad boy kicks in when you leave the car, even if you’ve switched it off and even if your key is in your pocket. It doesn’t BEEP-BEEP-BEEP every time though. I mean, where would be the fun in that? No, it prefers to BEEP-BEEP-BEEP either just as pedestrians are passing the car (ideally ones who look like they’ll happily tear you a new hole just for looking at them, never mind beeping at them), or at 6am / 11pm when the old couple next door (who you used to be friendly with in your pre-MG days) are tucked up nicely in bed.

In addition to the mesmerising sound effects we also have the pleasure of the worst in-car heating system since Fred Flintstone was reliant upon Wilma breaking wind to keep warm on the road. Essentially there are two settings: too cold & too hot. Instead of relaxing during my drive and taking advantage of the in-car entertainment, I spend the entire journey switching between the 2 aforementioned settings.

So yeah, that’s what my life looks like now. The days without CLANG-CLANG, BEEP-BEEP-BEEP and having to choose between a freezer & a furnace already seem light years away.

Comfort pack 2 upgrade to firmware will make your life much more harmonious but is a chargeable upgrade. You might blag it as it sounds like you will be calling the automotive ombudsman otherwise. We could of course start a crowd funding exercise to cover the cost - good luck,

Why did you buy it?

As said though, the comfort 2 update should remove most of the bongs. If you have indeed already had that, you can turn lane assist off for good in the infotainment menu.

There have been many, many threads about this issue, which will be sorted with the comfort 2 update. If you've just received the car then it should have been applied already. If it hasn't, then you should demand that it be applied free of charge as it's been available for 4/5 months at least.

Thanks, just emailed the dealer...

Our dealer said ALL cars coming in now have the Comfort update already installed.

Haven't heard my Pop complaining about the heating, mind you he doesn't have Wilma on board BUT more often than not Dino is in the back seat maybe that helps ?

The comfort 2 update will clear most of your concerns regarding the heating I always start in normal mode for the first 5 mins when it’s really cold and then switch to ECO mode and put the heated seat on. The heating is affected by your driving mode as you’ve probably already gathered.

QUASIMODO
They have made me deaf. THE BONGS! THE BONGS! They have made me totally deaf!!

I would go into the menus and turn everything off then turn them on one at a time to see which one is causing the annoyances.
The only thing that can be turned off is the lane assistance, and the price you pay for that is a CLANG-CLANG every time you start the car, reminding you that your tuned it off! Sounds like the comfort 2 update will ease my pain.

Dealer confirmed that comfort 2 upgrade is available... for £80!!! I've expressed my disappointment having spent over £20k with them just 2 days ago and suggested they might want to consider doing it for free. Awaiting response...

When I had the Merc 350e phev all updates were included for the duration of the warranty, only 3 years but after that you could extend it. The car was useless as a phev but I am disappointed that MG don’t follow through with firmware.

I had the same with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (also pretty useless as a PHEV), so just assumed it would be the same with MG.

Agreed, but if you’ve only just bought it, it should have already been installed on newly sold models.

We are assuming that it is a new car, and not a pre-loved one. If it is new it must come with the CF2 preinstalled

Is it ex demo or pre-registered or what?

Did you test drive it prior to buying?

Pre-registered with 900 miles on the clock. I test drove it and it was fine as I somehow managed to avoid setting off the lane assistant warning and didn't get the random speed warning either.
