MG5 SE LR
Had my new MG5 SE for a week now, taking it easy on local roads, only done about 100 miles so far. Generally happy, but very disappointed with the speed limit indicator. In various hire cars I have used over the past 2-3 years, these have been reasonably accurate, presumably using mapped data to know what the local limits are. But the MG5 (using just the front camera, it seems) is terrible. Much of the time it just doesn't know what the limit is; very often it is dangerously wrong (e.g. giving the national lmit sign when it is in fact 30 mph) and the pattern recognition algorithm doesn't even know about 20mph signs so they are ignored completely.
  • The satnav must 'know' about speed limits to be able to calculate driving times, so why doesn't it use those?
  • Is there any way of turning off the dashboard speed limit sign?
And a totally unrelated question - should I have had any paperwork provided with the car? All I have is the sales invoice. Previous cars I have had are provided with a booklet for recording servicing, fo example. Is this all saved electronically these days? (I'm OK with the manual being only elecronic, btw).

It's bizarre that the Satnav knows the correct speed limits yet the Instrument pack only gets speed limits from the camera. You'd think they would talk to each other and do a better job of working out which is correct. My PFL LR flashes a warning at me every time I drive on the motorway for exceeding the 60mph speed limit! :ROFLMAO:

How are you going to figure out which is correct? Your SatNav will never be able to track all changes and temporary limits (road works etc..), when was the last time you updated it?

I think I might just use Google directions with Android Auto. Speed limits on there seem pretty good, and many temporary limits are known about as well.

The default should be (and I presume is) the national speed limit for the road it is on unless the camera sees a sign advising otherwise but the dash needs to know if it is on a motorway or not.
What I'm talking about is when I'm on a motorway and the dash puts up a national speed limit sign, (which on an A or B road is 60) and flashes at me when I do 70. The satnav knows I'm on a motorway but the dash doesn't.
I have never updated the satnav as I never use it, I keep my phone on a magnetic holder and use it instead.

I don't expect this level of knowledge from a car Satnav as it would need an Internet connection so would require a SIM card which would cost money. My issue with it is when the car has the relevant info in one place but doesn't communicate that to a safety device like a speed warning.

The facelift models have internet connectivity as standard, and don't behave any better

Very strange! I think it has the same NMC battery pack (happy to be corrected) so I can't think why they would omit that feature. They don't list it as a selling point for the Trophy when you go to buy one.
Thanks, I have found the battery setting bar now, I must have done something different today.
You can... press and hold the OK button on the steering wheel and it will be switched off for your journey....
But I haven't got this to work, it still flashes after holding down 'OK'. And today it was worse; going from a 60 zone to a 70 zone the system didn't know and flashed the 'national limit' sign at me for 15 miles.
I think I'm going to cover up the speed limit indicator with some black sticky tape. Seems a shame on a nice new car.

Same here, holding OK never worked for me and I just assumed it was my fault.
I thought of taping it up too but the speed limit indicator is in a place were other useful information is on other screens. Unfortunately your only options are to switch to a different screen or learn to live with it.
Unless you figure out where the camera is and cover/disconnect it.
No speed limit display is much better and safer than one that is wrong a significant percentage of the time.
Although I've been rattling on about this it is really only a small issue and doesn't stop me liking the car very much overall so hopefully you will figure out how to ignore it too.

I just read the street signs myself. It wouldn't be a defence against a speeding charge to say that your speedo was telling you the wrong speed!!

I don't really spend much time looking at the dashboard once my ACC is set - and even that I can accelerate to and maintain fairly accurately on 30 or 40 without reference to the speedo (or ACC for that matter).

Keeping to the speed limits is not the issue here, irritating and distracting, nonsense flashing on the dash is the issue.

For keeping to the speed limit I love the manual speed limiting setting. I just wish there was a way to have it available from starting the car because it's a lot of faffing through the menus to get it compared to the ACC and it turns itself off every time you turn the car off

I never use it but I thought it worked the same as the ACC by pressing the blue button but with the stalk pushed away from you.

On my facelift you have to turn off ACC, go into vehicle settings, scroll to the speed limiter setting, set it to manual, set the right speed with the stalk, then press the button on the stalk to enable it

At least in our cars there is a sensation of speed, I recently had a test drive in a new Hyundai Kona E and it was scary how hard it was to tell the speed I was doing. I thought I was doing 30ish in a 30 zone then realised I was doing 45. 😮
