Zero Car Tax to £195/Yr.

If you didn't do it last March, then do it during March 2025. (No need to wait until the end - any time during March will do as the new tax will be effective from 01-Mar-25 regardless of which date in March you do it).

I'm sure everybody who has said to just re-tax it in March are correct, and it'll be ok, but for the reasons you have mentioned, I feel it's safer and potentially less illegal to sorn it for a day or two.
Why on earth would it be illegal to re-tax a car that is already taxed. Under normal circumstances this would involve you losing money as you lose what you have already paid for any remaining tax. However as yours cost £0 that is all you will lose, £0.

There's nothing illegal in taxing (VED) your car early.

Hi, I've got a first edition MG 5 2020 plate first registered in Feb 20
Been trying to make sense of the Road Tax changes and still not a clue what the Road Tax will be. Has any user yet got first hand experience?

Yes, as of April this year, your car tax rate will be £195pa, from your tax renewal date.

Hint, you can re-tax early online at the end of March, this will then give you the current £0 rate until April 2026.

Thanks so much for the information, Wow that's steep!
My wife and I both have MG5s and in last year we both used £345 home charging (rarely use other chargers as all regional driving)... If my maths are right thats an 88% increase for each of us!
Not sure If I understood you on taxing again though, how do you tax in Feb and then end of March again?

I don't think you can!

What is being suggested is that, if you can, you should tax your car for another year before the end of March this year, for a tax year starting on April 1st 2025. Like you, my tax is due by March 1st this year, so I shall retax my car in late February and so not need to pay the £195 until February 2026.

HTH.

Slightly confused, what's an 88% increase ? Car tax (VED) is/was zero so is an infinite percentage rise or simply a rise of £195 each.

I will sorn my november 74 plate MG5 in march for a day or two and then tax it again to get another £0 year play them at their own game i say.

You don't even need to sorn first, you just apply for tax early using the registration document number instead of reminder. The system just brings to your attention you don't need to do it yet and you agree to do it early anyway. :)

I think MGbok means an 88% increase to his overall running cost rather than VED. :)

I think the OP is referring to the overall costs of running the vehicles . It cost £345 per vehicle in electricity with zero VED . Add to that this year £195 per vehicle . I don't think that's 88% and, tbh , I can't be bothered to work it out ;) . It's still a large jump in costs

Your maths is a little off, it's just over a 56.5% increase, but yeah, a large jump in costs. ;)

Yeah, my maths were wrong lol, divided the wrong numbers, but it's over 50% increase for each of us

Yep, as I tell my employer, they employed me for my looks not brains lol

As I've said several times ... you can retax DURING March; no need to wait until the END of March because the act of retaxing sets your new tax date to the first of that month - March in this case. ;)

Thus your new tax date will then be 01-Mar-2026, NOT April 2026. :) (And payable using the reminder in February 2026).

Good point.
