Zero Car Tax to £195/Yr.

Before we go too far off-topic, I'll try and get this thread back to being MG related...

Don't be vague, ask for ?
Confirmation they'll do a software update at the next service

Who's tagline was "Man and machine in perfect harmony"?
Not MG

"We won't make a drama out of a crisis."
The MG4's AEB system

"You'll never put a better bit of butter on your knife."
Euphemism for the stock Chinese tyres?

Your flexible friend.
That's the MG4's undertray

Afore ye go.
Disable LKA, Disable speed camera sensors, set AEB sensitivity to low.

The ultimate driving machine
Has to be the XPower

Liquid engineering
That must be fixing the MG4's oil leak.

It's what your right arm is for.
Holding on to the steering wheel when you forgot to disable LKA

So tax on an EV from April will be £190.

How does this work for renewals?

Anyone renewing tax in the last few months - do you get quoted as free until April and taxed afterwards for a part year?

Another way of asking - would it make sense to declare sorn for a week at end of Feb and taxed afterwards in March, getting a year tax at £0. Or do you get 1 month free and taxed for 11 months?

Tax it for March, ie last day of Feb if you are a nervous nelly and you'll get 12 months for free.

This was mine I did in October just incase labour changed anything in the budget.
Application Made On: 21/10/2024 16:32:44
Vehicle Tax Period: 12 months
Vehicle Tax Amount Paid: GBP 0.00
I'll renew it for March.

Retax in March (not in February) ... that's because you "lose" the current month when you retax (without the tax reminder code) and so pay again for the current month. But as the cost is £0 it doesn't matter. That means your new tax will be from 01-Mar-25 and so won't need to be paid again until Feb-26 (with the tax reminder) to become effective again from 01-Mar-26 (at which point you'll start paying actual dosh). Thus you effectively get an 11 month extension on the £0 tax. :)

I hear there is a way to to tax your mg4 for free for 12 months just before its not free anymore?

Any info on this?

How much will it cost once you have to start paying

While I am very tempted to do this I am concerned that the DVLA may view this as illegal and issue a fine along with payment of duty. It would be great if someone from the legal profession would like to comment.

My tax was originally due in November 2024 (after retaxing in November 2023, after getting the car in November 2022). I went ahead and did this in March 2024, so I'm expecting to receive my renewal reminder next month in order to retax at £0 effective from 01-Mar-25. :)

If their website lets you do it then it is not illegal. The website warns you that you'll lose the current month's tax - so what, it costs £0 to do it.

I like and understand your logic. Unfortunately only politicians can claim “an honest mistake” - when caught out - Joe Public tends to have less luck

I'm sure everybody who has said to just re-tax it in March are correct, and it'll be ok, but for the reasons you have mentioned, I feel it's safer and potentially less illegal to sorn it for a day or two.

I did exactly the same in the same months as @siteguru
