Probably won’t get an MG4 again

The Renault Scenic (FWD) is well thought of and is COTY 2024, but has its share of niggles:

Poor rearward vision.
Spongy, inconsistent braking.
Deep boot, tricky to get heavy things in and out.
Poor ride at low speeds and on rough surfaces.

Bonus:
You can turn off the electronic nannies. Yay! 😁

I never had any faults at all with my Toyotas during my 10 year ownership from 2010 to 2020, just one recall for a wiring harness position check under the bonnet, which was done on a service.
I bought a new Prius back in 2005, was a great car. Only problems I had in the 7 years I owned it was the 12V battery failing in year 6 and a rear spring breaking thanks to the poorly maintained roads and speed bumps all over the place. The new Prius looks really nice, it's fast too. But the price - it's ridiculous.
Toyota just don't make anything that I find attractive now (apart from that new ludicrously expensive Prius), they seemed to just stand still while everyone else went into overdrive.

I'm very close to getting an MG, the only thing making me hesitate, tbh, is all the complaints we hear about the dealers. It'll be a second car so I suppose it's not a disaster if it needs attention and they take their time but, still...
--Edit--
Made up my mind and sent the payment in for a new polar white XPower. It's dealer stock so, assuming the bank lets me spend my own money (!) and nothing goes wrong I should have it by the end of next week.

+1 for RWD. Since our first RWD car, we've had mostly RWD or AWD cars from choice. The few FWD drive cars I've had have felt kind of meh.
Yeah, I'm not keen on FWD. My Focus ST was front wheel drive and could barely cope with the power it had. Even without dumping the clutch it would easily spin the wheels from a standing start. I had a police car follow me for miles after I accidentally left a trail of rubber across a roundabout. They lost interest when I didn't do anything else silly for a while lol

On the other hand, RWD does need a bit of finesse and driver care sometimes, remember all those Porsche's that ended up in ditches because people booted them on bends while holding the steering wheels with just a finger and thumb, presumably to 'look cool' or something.

I don't understand why my post was edited by a Mod. I didn't break any forum rules, did I?
Can you DM me please?
Then remove this post.

Your guess, is as good as mine. 😉🙂👍

The new VZ performance version (322bhp) seems to get good reviews 👍

Yep, quite like the Born, looks good and nice interior. But even the performance version is too slow. (Although not exactly a snail). And if they did make one to match the X Power in performance terms, it would then be much too expensive. 🙂👍

Another advantage of RWD is the turning circle can be much smaller (if they design the car right) because the front wheels are not restricted by the drive shaft angles.

(plus RWD is just more "fun" - especially if you have an S2000 weekender in the garage :) sideways action whenever you want!)

I occasionally see "last edited by a moderator" on my posts too. I can only think it's a spelling mistake or grammar !!

Now, when I do that, I check the wee box that says "edit silently" so that note doesn't appear. Keeps you all guessing!

Suprised most of my posts, aren't edited then. No watta mean, innit. 😉🙂👍

Are you sure they're not? 😇

Most likely, bad speling or grammer and or...
In this case, I added the word "Renault". I hadn't heard of that model (the Scenic), and had to look it up. I thought I'd save other readers the trouble.

Moderators do occasionally make edits for posts that break the rules. But then they are very likely to tell you why.

I'll admit to being "one of those people" who really hates to see spelling or grammatical errors. Some posts from people whose first language is not English are much more readable after a light editing.

Worse, I'm a stickler for correct units, and case (upper or lower) for those units. For example, it's "12V battery" or "12 volt battery". The V stands for Volt, from a person's name (Volta). Yet when written out in full ("volt"), it's considered an ordinarily word, and thus not capitalised. Be thankful that I don't berate anyone for such errors 👊📏😅. (I wonder how many readers remember the ruler over the knuckles at school.) I do believe that the forum is a better place (e.g. fewer misunderstandings) as a result. So please don't be offended if you see your post edited.

If I or another moderator accidentally changes the intent of your post, then certainly mention it and we'll fix it up. Or just edit your post; all forum users can edit their own posts.

The MG4 is the first RWD car I've ever had (apart from a Mercedes C class hire car at one point) ... RWD feels much more responsive for steering vs FWD.
The 4 has a smaller turning circle as well, as do all RWD cars due to the lack of drive shaft paraphernalia needed for FWD.
I was brought up on RWD passing my test in 1973 when most cars were RWD, so soon got used to loss of traction at the rear wheels and learning how to deal with it.
FWD cars tend to be easier to correct when losing grip.

SWMBO had a 2006 Prius, she bought it at 4 years old in 2010 and had it 11 years, in that time she too had one broken spring and a new 12V in 2016 (10 year old original 12V). In 2020 (14 years old) it developed a HV battery fault known as the red triangle of death, where a few of the cells were not charging fully. The car was still actually functioning ok though. The dealer wanted £4000 to fix it. After searching on youtube I found a video on how to change the cells out, very easy to do and bought 3 second hand cells at £18 each, swapped them out and cleaned all the connections on the others and resolved the fault for £54. With the fault the car was valued at £300, after fixing it we got £3000 trade in on her MG5.
EDIT: Just checked the online VED checker and it's still on the road.

Even though I don't have that much RWD experience, I'm also comfortable with losing traction at the rear. (That's why I'm a proponent of "best tyres on the driving axle" rather than "best tyres always on the rear"). :)

My first few cars were rear wheel drive. I find they are easier to predict and regain control when they loose traction. I was one of those hooligans who when it snowed used to go and practice power slides in the local shopping centre car park after the shops had closed.

They've really missed a trick with that new Prius. A full EV option with a battery to give a 250+ mile range would sell like crazy, I'd have one, it looks spectacular, but I'm just not interested in obsolete hybrid stuff anymore.

MG dealers are generally mediocre. (but aren't most dealers?) I bought a new MG5 in December as it was a no brainer, they were giving them away after a little haggling on runout. £21k for a car with a retail price of £34k until a couple of months earlier. Not the very best thing in the world, but a heck of a thing for £21k!

As it goes I probably wouldn't buy another MG4 but that doesn't mean I regret the one I have as there was not and still isn't anything in a comparible price bracket. The nearest equivalent I would be happy with is the Kia EV3 and that is 35k

I could be tempeted by a refreshed version however

(y) it certainly helps when units are made clear.

My bugbear is when people use kW when they mean kWh or vice versa.

Or worse still, KWH - the mind boggles what a Kelvin-Watt-Henry is a measure of?!

Yes, units that are named after people should be in capitals (Ampere, Watt and Volt etc.) Talking of which there are two more for you to fix, 2 posts after yours ;)
in that time she too had one broken spring and a new 12v in 2016 (10 year old original 12v).
