New MG4 tyre pump damaged car power socket, as connector casing brittle, is this common

Accessory plugs need to be of high quality and make good reliable contact when they are handling the high current the tyre pump draws when operating. Cheap ones such as the one pictured often oveheat, which is what appears to have happened here. The overheating is caused by the centre contact making poor/ high resistance with the socket which then either melts the casing of the plug or makes it go brittle as pictured. Damage can occur to the socket as well.
I would only use the tyre inflator for emergency use only. I'm not sure if @PJR was using it for that, or as a regular tyre inflator.
For general use I have a battery powered unit. I've found this capable of adjusting the pressure of all four tyres when needed with ease. Link included
