solar
Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV) or indirectly using concentrated solar power. Photovoltaic cells convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect. Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and solar tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight to a hot spot, often to drive a steam turbine.
Photovoltaics were initially solely used as a source of electricity for small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to remote homes powered by an off-grid rooftop PV system. Commercial concentrated solar power plants were first developed in the 1980s. Since then, as the cost of solar electricity has fallen, grid-connected solar PV systems have grown more or less exponentially. Millions of installations and gigawatt-scale photovoltaic power stations continue to be built, with half of new generation capacity being solar in 2021.In 2021 solar generated 3.8% (1040 TWh) of the world's electricity-compared to 1% (253 TWh) in 2015 when the Paris Agreement to limit climate change was signed. Wind and solar generated over 10% of the world's electricity in 2021. Along with onshore wind, the cheapest levelised cost of electricity is utility-scale solar.Much more low carbon power, such as solar, is urgently needed to limit climate change, but the International Energy Agency said in 2022 that more effort was needed for grid integration and the mitigation of policy, regulation and financing challenges.
I’ve recently identified that we are on an old British Gas smets1 meter. We called and spoke to Octopus who have said they won’t come and upgrade it because it’s technically a smart meter, even though they can’t take readings from it. Additionally, they think it’ll upgrade automatically one day...
Trying out my first day of free solar charge on the mg4. ( se lr) - i.e , the suns out for the first time since i bought the car ???
My Wallbox Pulsar Max has the ability to do it but I've got a meter not installed that it needs to work ( one day) so my Heath Robinson solution ( Bodgit+Scarper)...
I have Zappi, Solar Panels and 9kWh of batteries, I’m contracted to Octopus intelligent go tariff my issues when I plug in my EV for charging on a sunny day Octopus sets the charging schedule overriding my surplus energy from my solar panels, it then downloads from the grid, as anyone have the...
Being one to try and road trip any vehicle here is my single person set up. At 173cm I fit although the bed is a bit sloping but ok.
120Ah LiFePO battery box
120W solar blanket & PWM controller
15L fridge (not running from vehicle battery)
Folding table
Folding stool (supports head/pillow...
Last Tuesday I made my last visit to a petrol station.
Eight months ago we were an all ICE family with a Mini and a BMW 320. We had a house that had solar panels but had decided we needed battery storage and decided that Octopus IOG was the cheapest way to charge the battery in winter but that...
We're about to have solar panels + an EV charger (Zappi, probably) + a house battery installed, still at the quoting stage; BUT, we're unsure which to choose from the Tesla Powerwall or the Givenergy All-In-One batteries. we're already with Octopus.
Does anyone have experience of which they've...

Hi,Can anyone tell me if i can charge my solar battery and electric car at same time from the grid. If i can Would I still get to charge the car at 7kw or would it reduce because house battery is charging. Have a solis inverter with a 5kw puredrive batt, zappi being installed on Friday.
would...
Hi all I'll list my current usage scenario before asking for advice.
I currently use circa 15kwh daily household usage, 24kwh 5 times a week usage for my commute.
Fixed rate tariff ends in September.
Looking at moving in 3 years and only have a small area on my west facing roof available for...
When I got my car I just plugged in the granny lead and let it get on with it. I still haven't got a home charger or a variable tariff (although I'm thinking of going full solar/home battery later this year). I also started to take notice of my electricity consumption for the first time. One...
As VAT on standalone and retrofit batteries is reduced to 0% from Feb 1st, it makes installing them a slightly more viable option. My roof is unsuitable for solar panels so standalone is my only real option.
Was wondering what a reasonable price for install alone would be for a Givenergy all in...
Tomorrow Axle want to discharge my house battery between 5-6pm but the Octopus Saving Session is between 5.30-6.30pm. What is the best way to manage this if Axle charge up the house battery after it's event but during the last half hour of the Octopus event?
So I now have Octopus Intelligent so between 11:30pm - 05:30am its 7.5p.
I also have solar and a home battery. Is it now worth me charging my house battery to 100% overnight and exporting the battery and excess solar during the day? Will it affect the life of the battery more than I will get...
I'm going to sign up for a survey at least for a solar and battery scheme the local council are organising (solartogether, basically companies bid to the council and the lowest cost bid wins, then contacting all households who've expressed an interest).
They're installing Growatt batteries and...
Hi
If I go for one of the octopus schemes where they pay me for exporting i.e. Octopus Intelligent, will this effect and income I get for the government.
Had my panels since 2011 so get the full pay outs.
Regards, Dave
So I got 19 panels and two 5kWh batteries installed for £12.5k and absolutely loving it. 9 panels facing south and 10 facing mostly east and a little south. Generating plenty to power the house and the two cars and exporting some on a bright day. Wish I had done it sooner.
I have fitted all my own solar system at home so I know one end of a screwdriver to hold every time I get a price quote for a pro to do it it's a thousand quid plus I'm not going to pay that I want to do it myself can anyone help me It seems buy the charge point 450 pounds lump of cooker cable...
