solar
Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV) or indirectly using concentrated solar power. Photovoltaic cells convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect. Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and solar tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight to a hot spot, often to drive a steam turbine.
Photovoltaics were initially solely used as a source of electricity for small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to remote homes powered by an off-grid rooftop PV system. Commercial concentrated solar power plants were first developed in the 1980s. Since then, as the cost of solar electricity has fallen, grid-connected solar PV systems have grown more or less exponentially. Millions of installations and gigawatt-scale photovoltaic power stations continue to be built, with half of new generation capacity being solar in 2021.In 2021 solar generated 3.8% (1040 TWh) of the world's electricity-compared to 1% (253 TWh) in 2015 when the Paris Agreement to limit climate change was signed. Wind and solar generated over 10% of the world's electricity in 2021. Along with onshore wind, the cheapest levelised cost of electricity is utility-scale solar.Much more low carbon power, such as solar, is urgently needed to limit climate change, but the International Energy Agency said in 2022 that more effort was needed for grid integration and the mitigation of policy, regulation and financing challenges.
Hi
If I go for one of the octopus schemes where they pay me for exporting i.e. Octopus Intelligent, will this effect and income I get for the government.
Had my panels since 2011 so get the full pay outs.
Regards, Dave
So I got 19 panels and two 5kWh batteries installed for £12.5k and absolutely loving it. 9 panels facing south and 10 facing mostly east and a little south. Generating plenty to power the house and the two cars and exporting some on a bright day. Wish I had done it sooner.
I have fitted all my own solar system at home so I know one end of a screwdriver to hold every time I get a price quote for a pro to do it it's a thousand quid plus I'm not going to pay that I want to do it myself can anyone help me It seems buy the charge point 450 pounds lump of cooker cable...
I'm just coming up to my second year of ownership of an MG5 and had a wall charger for as long, but have only just started being able to use the charger in solar mode. In the past it would always draw from the grid rather from the solar panels, whenever I elected solar or solar + mode. After...
I have been paying our old electric company £365 per month for charging the MGZS EV and running a pond pump.
I have now had 12 solar panels and two 5kw batteries installed and that has knocked 75% off the cost of our electric its a big investment but at this rate 3 years will provide pay back...
DIY Solar to charge a car. hello my home's electricity is supplied with a DIY solar system, and this time of the year I have enough electricity to run 3 homes, starting most days on a 600AMPH battery bank 80% charged, so by 10oclock in the morning the charge controller is dumping excess...
Just a simple question: to those of you who have Solar PV and benefit from the Smart Export Guarantee, how long (in days, weeks, months or whatever) did it take for your chosen "supplier" (of the payments) to accept your application and actually get your system fully registered and hence...
hi everyone,
Is anyone using their photovoltaics to charge your MG? What kind of figures do you get daily/monthly?
I managed to "harvest" over 185kwh this month so far, and will possibly get close to 200kwh - that's over 3 full "tanks". Maximum daily car charge was around 18kwh, but it could...
Hi there,
All things being equal we should have our EV charging point installed by British Gas in the next few weeks and take receipt of our MG ZS. LRT. ( EV charging point may not be the best, but it’s what we are getting ?)
We are considering solar panels and a house battery once we move...
A few thoughts on my visit to the Fully Charged show on Friday.
Use discount code FCLEXH10 (kindly offered by Easee One) for a 10% discount
Also select the Patreon / YouTube supporter option when you order your tickets. (There’s no check that you subscribe to these channels- though I do)...
Hi everyone,
As the title suggests, I already have a home charger, a Pod-Point which came free with my first EV. I have solar panels on the roof and a variable current granny charger which I use to syphon off any excess generation. For this, I have to keep an eye on the weather and use the...
I’ve finally been able to convince my wife that the initial outlay for a Zappi, solar PV and battery storage installation has been worth it. I showed her our solar being diverted to the car (instead of British Gas) via the Zappi app and I got a big smile and thumbs up, which coming from my wife...
I’ve posted before about getting solar & battery, and while it’s a little off topic I thought it might be of interest to some.
I've now had my solar and battery for just over 10 months and I thought I'd share some stats. For reference my system is 5.2kwp of solar (JA Solar) & 7.2kwh of battery...
I have been looking at ways of charging my EV when the sun shines on my solar panels, I checked out Zappi etc and was quite supprised at the price of £800+
So I installed an adjustable current monitering device that switches on a contactor when the solar panels reach 2.2kw output (4kw fitted)...
Anybody who maybe considering solar / battery storage may find this video from Ian Sampson very interesting and really worth a watch.
I have been a sub to Ian's channel right from the very start and he produces some great EV content.
In the video he briefly runs through his history of EV...
Hi all, first post and I'm glad that there is a community dedicated to the MG EV range.
My wife and I are 2 days into our EV adventure and I can't help pondering the viability of adding a large flexible solar panel atop my MG to assist with powering it's 12v systems.
Not expecting huge...
Does anyone have a solar panel that they plug in to charge their ZS EV? (Not the permanent ones mounted on a house)
If so, how decent are they? I expect they won’t charge much but may be wrong….
6 years ago we bought a semi detached house with 8 solar panels. Few months later we have purchased our first EV to take advantage of the solar. We use FiT getting around £850 per year.
Today we have one full EV MG4 and phev for caravan.
Our gas boiler is faulty and will be definitely getting...
