I'll try and keep this short.
Me and my Nephew are joint members of the AA. We've got Roadside assistance and Recovery. Got my renewal, it was £319. Last year it was £230. I wasn't a Happy Bunny. So phoned them today. They gave me the usual Waffle, but they got it down to, £250. Still wasn't happy. So he came back with the final offer of, £132.
Which obviously I accepted. So obviously trying it on, as some people would just accept that and pay. Really, really Bugs me. ???

Final offer was almost £100 cheaper than last year? Or is that a typo and you meant £232? (FWIW circa £130 sounds about right for the personal cover with home start and relay plus - after negotiation).

For me I have AA cover via MG Assist, the cost of which was included in the servicing. :)

Nope not a typo. It was £132 for exactly the same cover. Should have phoned last year but just payed it, more fool me. It won't happen again. ??

People just need to understand that the AA business does not exist to help you, it exists to take your money and the best deal for them is for you to give it all to them in return for nothing.

Same applies to every business in existence :)
Agreed, they are all Robbing Bastards. And the bigger the company the worse they are. ???

We always seem to think the worst of anyone, why? It makes us/you look better!
Visit the AA website and you will see the range of prices.

Don't need to visit the AA website. It's in Black and White in front of me. They tried it on. And it didn't work, but unfortunately for some it will work. A simple phone call sorted it. But why do it in the 1st place. They are legalized robbers, just like insurers. I don't understand the,
"It makes us/you look better" comment.
???

I tried that a few years ago. On the second year, it was the same girl on the phone, and she sussed me out.

So, that was the last year with the AA....:)

Before the days of a new car and complimentary cover, I used to be with Auto Aid. You had to pay up front and then claim back any costs. I always had good service from them.

Just wondering... new here... not sure if this is the appropriate thread. Randomly my EV refused to take a charge from a various public chargers and was towed. I was 200km from home. No pre warning I have the car 10 weeks. Used MG Assist. AA declined an attempt at roadside repair they said the car was too new 2024 (never turned up) sent out tow wagon. They towed to storage because of Bank Holiday. Now want additional payment as its not my nearest MG dealership. So ok I tow to nearest dealership from point of breakdown which is Limerick but would ultimately have to incur additional costs myself to travel there to retrieve the vehicle? Its 280km from home. I'm probably naive but what if I was further from home? If Roadside Assist could rectify the error at the roadside, potentially I'd be booking the car into Linders MG and driving it there myself with no additional costs to me or AA!? Never mind getting lifts and trains to get home and then to collect hire car. I was told I could only have hire car for 48 hours so delayed taking it so I could use it to get in and out of work while waiting for car to be delivered to dealership after the BH!! S

If the cover is the same as the UK it should cover on recovery to any destination. Click on the underlined here word on the page.

The mg.ie version of the website doesn't have this link but has the same overall wording in the description.

Recovery only to nearest dealership. €250 cost to me to tow to my local MG Dealer. Saturday of BH breakdown. MG arrived at garage from storage by towing company on Tuesday evening, not examined, potentially will be today Wednesday. I had to push the towing company to deliver it to MG on Tuesday not Wednesday meaning the car hire would expire before my car had been delivered to the garage. Hire cover by MG Assist (AA) expires lunchtime today (48 hours-picked up on Monday). So I'm liable for any additional hire, despite the lady from AA on Saturday telling me it would be extended to 3 days because this occurred on a BH and I shouldn't be penalised for that ie. the garage isn't open to inspect the car. As did the gentleman at car hire on Monday. Wednesday different day different story. The terms are the terms but the ambiguity means there is more juggling with time and hire cars, as the next person you speak to contradicts what their colleague said! Even the guy at the garage said he gets different stories every time! Plus an attempt at a roadside repair by the AA agent (refused-but also part of their terms) may have allowed me to get my car home under its own steam (or charge). Ok rant over!!

I think the problem is that you are not in the UK. That is a stipulation in the terms of the cover.

....? No the terms regarding that element and car hire at least are the same in the ROI. It's nearest in UK and ROI only local if local is no further that the nearest.
"it will be taken to the nearest MG Service Partner or, alternatively, to a local destination of the Authorised Driver’s choice, provided it is no further".

Also one to note - you must take up the car hire option within 48 hours of your report to MG (AA) Assist. So by their terms ROI and UK I couldn't push it out until Tuesday to cover the delivery of my car to dealership.

So the MG AA membership is not the same as the normal AA membership?
Coz the normal AA will take you, wherever you want to go. From Cornwall to Glasgow if need be. If your 300 miles from where you live, just taking you to the nearest MG dealer, is useless, you want it closest to where you live. 🤔🙄

I'm sure I remember examples on here of cars recovered longer distances.
e.g.

Rang MG (AA) Assist yesterday morning when asked for extra €250 by their towing company. They said it was to nearest dealership and it was a separate contract between me and their towing company if I wanted it at local garage as that was extras kms.

That sounds like a load of cobblers, to me. Ring the "proper" AA and see what they say. As far as I'm concerned it's to where you want go. And why can't one of there own AA trucks take your car to the nearest garage to you. Worth a try. 🤔🙄

Ah, I see the loophole they are using. In the Ireland T&C's it says you have to be 500 miles (804km) from your home address before they will repair at the roadside or relay you to the garage nearest to where you live. From your original post, you were 200km.

Edit: Very different from the UK T&C's where you only have to be a quater of a mile from home to get the full works.
