Alpine A290.

The nearly new market has some belting cars but the whole luxury car tax will make me seriously considering my next purchase, I have no issues whatsoever with paying £190 a year road tax, I think electric cars should, but I will not be happy paying over £500 for any car originally over the £40k odd threshold, that is an awful lot of normal ev's.
One of the many documentaries on "Is it the right time to buy an electric car", probably on Channel 5, asserted that the average purchase price of a new electric car is £43,000 which would put the average purchase in the luxury tax bracket. The tax doesn't take account of the front-loading of the purchase price for electric cars. First they take my Winter Fuel Allowance now they want to tax my environmentally friendly wheels. Why not load the tax onto ICE vehicles to pay for the pollution they cause....:(

I agree re the luxury car tax but disagree completely with EVs not paying £190 road tax, I think we, as owners of EVs should pay.

I think some drivers are struggling enough with the way the world is and relying on their cars for work without pumping more cost on their road tax, whilst a growing number of people who are fortunate enough to be in a position to be able to afford to purchase an EV aren't paying anything.

Give it a couple of years and you will be able to pick up new generation used Taycan for the same money as a new XPower, I know it will be slower than the XPower but that's Porsche for you
Agree but, the Porsche will be about 5 years old, with the possible problems that might bring. Against a Brand new,
X Power, with the possible problems that might bring. ???

Got to drive a taycan as a boy I worked with has one, by far the best ev I've driven.
Handles great, fast, top notch interior quality. As you would expect for a car of that cost, big lump of a car though

I'd have one at 35k and service it myself.

With that in mind I would have to keep it for at least 5 years or more likely forever.

There are lots of things I'd quite like but lack of V2L is a deal breaker for me.....

And can I just add I really approve of your new Avatar!
Excellent!?

I got it just for you, didn't even have to make it up!!

Same car under the skin I believe?
What a bargain!

Granted, not nearly as pretty or prestigious as the Pork in my opinion.

I see this week a lot of the car reviewers are releasing their take on the Alpine A290. They have obviously had it drummed into them by Alpine that a fun car is not all about speed (especially as the 0-60 time is 6.4s). So all the reviews are about handling on twisty roads and the fact that a 200 mile range is OK as it has kept the weight of the car down.

Thing is, this does seem to go against the kind of things they were saying about the XPower where it's 0-60 time of under 4s made it not a hot hatch and the fact it had far less range than a Tesla went against it.

EV's have turned the market upside down and not only have the manufacturers not caught on to the brave new World, the reviewers also need to do some catching up (as would an A290 driver chasing an XPower)

To get to review a car from the manufacturers you have to give a reasonably good review, otherwise you will never get a car to review, no cars no You-tube income.
As demonstrated by all the MG4 reviews when it came out.

There is no way that alpine will win in a race with the X Power but if you watch/read the x power reviews the criticisms of the car centred around its handling, ride, steering feel (I was going to say feedback but we know it has that😉), and braking. All the things they are saying the Alpine excels at; it depends what you are looking for in a car I suppose.

Alpine have obviously given them a Bung. (Does that go on?) 😉 Never watch them. Most (all) of them are tossers. 🙂👍
I believe they get free food, accommodation, travel to somewhere exotic and all that jazz. Softened up no doubt!

At the very least they would be in a good mood when doing the review.

That said, Jack from Fully Charged and Nicola from Electrifying were openly underwhelmed with the new Capri.

In a straight line no but the Xpower isnt a handling machine...

Takes me back to a Mini Cooper VS 69 XY GTHO phase 3 Falcon ( for people who never heard of it google it as it was the fastest 4 door production car in the world at the time ).
I remember watching those 2 race; the mini would crush it around corners till it hit the straight; the GTHO would blast back past due to the sheer HP from the 351 cubic inch V8. Next corner the mini would catch it again !!

So on a track it would be fun to see what came out on top the X power or the alpine 290 !!

I do feel the X power has too much power for its actual capabilities !!

That all said and why the X power is such a great car how many times are you really racing people on public roads around the twisty stuff??

VS

destroying them off the lights and having that fantastic smile on your face; I just rolled some try hard snob in a car costing WAY WAY more !!

So does having go kart F1 handling actually mean ANYTHING on public roads !!!

Funny thing happened to me few days ago guy was looking a bit shocked when he tried to take a run at me in his 2000 e55 coupe merc and I left him wondering why and what just happened !!

Once again I took off from the lights up to 80km speed limit and I saw him coming fast by the time he caught me I'd already put the foot down and left him wondering UMMM WHAT lol

This is why I love my X power for them moments !!

Thats not a capri
v6 capri.jpg

This is a capri !!

Make me moderner looking version in a EV of this car and shut up and take my money !!!

I had a 69 V6 capri as my first car and wow what a machine !!

( tell a lie the v6 was my second car my first was a 70 1600 capri with 2lt cortina motor in it that i rebuilt with my dad when i was 15 )

Bought my v6 for $1600aud wholesale cost traded in at a toyota dealership my brother worked at..

from memory in about 1999 !! ( i think )

NOW it would be worth 60k to 80k aud

seriously make modern looking version using the same lines and style in a EV with AWD charge 100k aud and i would buy it no questions !!

come to think of it if money was no object and i could find the right car modifier / builder i would let them chop my Xpower up and add the old Capri shell to it :) :)

I would add that the acceleration alone is not much use on UK roads. Sure it is fun for the brief seconds you can do it without speeding but be mindful a chap at work recently got done for racing away from lights in his Audi RS6, undue care and attention, unmarked cop car saw him, this was in a 30 limit.

He obviously, unfortunately (for him) dropped on a bored, jobsworth cop.
It happens. 🙄

Maybe laws are different in aus as long as you don’t break traction. And don’t break the speed limit they can’t do much ..

Yes I got pulled over few months ago by a marked hwy patrol car it was at night so I didn’t see him but nothing came of it as he said you have done nothing wrong but just be careful accelerating so fast..

Pretty much just chatted for 10 minutes 🤣

Did have some cop try to pull me over for excessive acceleration..
Like 12 years ago !!
This cop was a nutcase I asked “ did I break traction “ no” “ did I break the speed limit ?” No then go away and basically he did !

Idiot was trying everything to pull me over like he should have been arrested for dangerous driving not me !!

You obviously dropped on a Cop, with a bit of common sense! 🙂👍
