I have a Samsung S10+ a great phone and it has a 256gb SD card with all my music on so the other day we set off into the lakes for a good day out (mentioned elsewhere re range issues) I was running the Poweramp app to play the music via Android Auto & it was just playing on shuffle and all morning it was faultless, then about 1 pm it started acting up for some reason, anyway I just shut it off it was not playing musing but showed the play icon so you press it and it starts scrolling through titles stops and you have to start again but it wasn't playing anything.
I also have the same selection of songs on a thumb drive but of course, there is only one USB socket that is connected to Android Auto (WHY when it has a USB C socket too) so I bought the USB splitter below as it actually mentions car in the description so I tried to have to connect to the phone on one end and the drive on the other but no matter which way it was connected together or singly nothing came through AA so I had to abandon that, I checked the splitter on my laptop and it works fine so it's the car at fault it seems, no use for a splitter so back to Amazon it goes.
Poweramp is gone, and I've installed VLC.
It appears that AA and Google have issues regarding playing music, I've not tried VLC in the car yet but will report if there are any problems.
Any workarounds you have will be greatly appreciated
