Android auto used to work fine on my zs ev, but now doesn't seem to recognize the phone although the phone still charges. I don't think the problem is with the phone as my wife has the same problem. Any ideas?

Try a new lead. Android Auto is infamous for not working if the lead is even slightly worn.

Better still, get a wireless android auto box, they are amazing, just get in the car and AA is on!

I got one similar to this, and it works perfectly.

I am having the same issue with Andriod Auto.. use a samsung phone and when on a long drive the AA connects happily but on short journeys the phone will not connect and the songs will not play. I have tried 3 different andriod auto boxes and 3 phones (2 samsung, 1 iphone) I had problem with all of these.

Irony is I get the problem when I plug the phone directly using a cable.. I have used multiple cables (most of them are fast cahrge enabled cables) it is so annoying..

cables could get damaged and stop working eventually. half the cables I bought were sold as "fast charge" and presumably better quality - when I check them on my phone, far from fast, just normal charging... same for MG, can't blame it for poor quality cables - I tried at least 4-5 before finding one to work.
In the end, I bought cheap Android Auto dongle on AliExpress for about £13 and that works perfectly fine so far. Would recommend it.

Got the wireless dongle even before collecting the car and been using since day one. No issues with connectivity and it’s fast. Recommended to try it instead of using wired connection. Save you the trouble.

Mine connects fine to Android Auto. I hold down the button, and say "Send SMS to Andy", it confirms and asks what the message is. At this point the microphone doesn't appear to be active, and it simply times out.

Any ideas?

check app settings on your phone that they have permissions to access your microphone and that Android Auto is allowed access to SMS.
This is an old issue with SMS and AA, lot on the internet ...

I had exactly the same problem, posted here for help, I found my problem was the USB cable. Try a new, good quality, needs to be one capable of data transfer read this on another non MG forum, it worked for me, I believe the cable failed with use.
I'll try and remember to post the type of cable I bought, it's a right angled data quality cable and now works fine.

I had to make the hole larger in the rubber/plastic pad to accept the size of the new cable, managed a very neat job, also got away with very short cable of 250mm, so the finished job looks good and no spare cable showing.

I have the same issue (samsung), but my wife's pixel3a works fine. I've tried a few cables. Matbe it's the connection socket in my phone.
I also cannot pair with the car by bluetooth, the phone says I need an extra app!

Other stuff pairs, the phone says it has paired but cannot connect without another (unspecified) app

and the car? does it say it paired with your phone or not? have you tried updating and restarting your phone, might be something missing on it?

it's obviously something with your phone since your wife's phone connects ...

what stops working? AA or YouTube?
Is it YouTube Music or YouTube you are trying to play?
Cables - whatever you think is a good cable, might not be. I bought many "fast charging" that turned out to be anything but ... you just need to try at least 4-5 different "good" cables to make sure, happened to me too. Or, make it simple and get wireless AA dongle

It's not only youtube.. it's spotify or the local music player in the phone all are having issue. I used many cables, fast charging, the cables that came with the phone, cable came with the aa wireless etc.
