Love how the car looks and drives. Hate the software niggles and absolutely detest the inattention to detail in the cabin, which has resulted in some terrible materials used and the amount of creaks and rattles is simply obscene.

I’ve had the interior light housing off several times now and used foam/felt to reduce the rattles, but now I have awful creaking coming from somewhere. I’ve a feeling it’s behind or beneath the infotainment screen, but wherever it’s from it would drive you round the bend! Sounds like someone rubbing a piece of foam against a piece of plastic, and happens on every bump or corner.

Totally destroying the driving experience for me

Mine doesn't have creaks or rattles. Well, very occasionally I notice something from the general direction of the infotainment screen, but that's really it.

I think someone else had that problem and the fix was to put a bit of felt at between the back of the infotainment screen and the dashboard.

Yes - as a newbie to EV's I'm super stoked with what you get for the money. Bought a 2nd hand 22 plate Trophy. Few niggles with the controls but after reading through the forum (thanks to all contributors) it all makes sense.

Thanks. I’m thinking of removing it once I work out how to from the manual. The noise is honestly horrible.

I’d take it to the dealer but I’ve never had a good experience in the past when complaining about rattles etc. in my other cars, so wouldn’t hold out much hope of it being properly sorted. Some things are better done yourself, and noises in the cabin are one of those things.

People often come to a forum for information (sometimes before purchasing) but also to get help with issues they have. This can sometimes give the impression that there are lots of problems when, in fact, happy owners, just get on and enjoy their cars without feeling any need to discuss them. Which leaves a disproportionately large proportion of threads posted here being about problems. So let's ask the question.

Are you enjoying your MG4?
Yes, best car I ever had. despite the Minor probs (which I've had with every car) the car is a joy to drive. Much better than the last three Mercs I've owned. More kit at half the price (than the cheapest Electric Merc) NO contest.

I voted in the middle for this, my thoughts (Trophy LR):

Pros:
  • In terms of driving range it seems to do what it says on the tin; miles/kWh seems to be where the book suggests.
  • Handling and performance; in the handling stakes its no golf GTI but its pretty good for a non sports oriented hatch, partly helped by how stiff the chasis is due to the battery floor. I find that it can get unsettled at the back end with mid corner bumps. Its got enough get up and go to keep most people happy (I wouldn't call it fast at all, but its good)
  • I'm no audiophile so for me the stereo is perfectly fine & loud enough for a metalhead.
  • Spacious inside but like most cars I have long legs so finding a perfect driving position is hard. The only one I have found that gave me a perfect driving position is a 2006 Mustang GT, so thats no slight on the MG4. Also plenty of storage and the seats are comfy
  • Very few rattles and squeeks from the interior the ones there where there were an easy solve with a bit of fabric tape.
  • Plenty of room in the boot for stuff
  • Never had an issue with public charging stations.
  • Tyre wear is better than I expected (horror stories put it at a similar level to some hot hatchbacks I have owned)
  • Its a good looking car imho
  • The choice to have simple alloys and plastic covers for aero seems like a sensible cost saving choice
  • Good brakes when you really stand on them
  • Heated seats and steering wheel are good.
Cons
  • The software is utter trash, I often say to people "I don't appreciate being MG's beta tester" and I will maintain that stance. I have several pages of notes in an A5 note book of the various failures that I have had over the 20 months I have owned it. I was a software engineer for several years (I now work in product integrity) and frankly MG should be embarassed by it. I'd expect our first year apprentices to do better.
  • The driver aids at best need work and at worst are borderline homicidal, the radar cruise control is jerky, the emergency brake assist kicks when you don't want it to and the LKA assist - well there is a whole thread on that, lets just say if I know I am going above 30mph it gets turned off.
  • After 11,000 miles and 20 months the drivers door keyless entry button has stopped working.
  • The auto high beam is rubbish, thankfully switched off means switched off.
  • The boot up times for the infotainment seem excessive - my 8 year old tablet (now retired) boots in half the time.
  • Lack of buttons for controls (everything on a screen bar a few basic functions) is a case of solving a problem that never existed
  • I'm used to being able to open the door and continue reversing when in tight spaces - I don't appreciate it preventing me from doing that
Other Notes (not good or bad):
  • The lack of an on/off button with the seat power up seems like solving a problem that never existed, not a problem but its just weird to me.
  • Given the car has 360 cameras and a swathe of driver aids (whether they work or not) the lack of front parking sensors, especially on the top model, seems like an odd design decision.
Ultimately the constant issues with the systems mean I don't really trust the car. I don't hate it but I don't trust it and with the residuals on a 4 year old MG4 now being £3,000 lower than my current GFV it doesn't matter how low the milage or how well I look after it I am only ever going to get the GFV for it its pointless keeping it for the full duration of the finance so in the new year its likely going back to the finance company.

Pretty much exactly how I feel about the car.

What I find so disappointing is your list of cons could almost entirely be fixed with proactive software updates.

That pro list in isolation makes the car exceptional value for money and a great car. The cons list makes it the opposite.

I haven't needed to use it yet, the rain just runs off. I have only had the ER for a couple of weeks and I really like it, I noticed the wee button on the end of the stalk. I haven't even given it its first wash, disgraceful??.
What I have noticed though is the spoiler over the rear window is loose, it's going in this afternoon to the dealer to get it tightened up. I spoke to them yesterday about it and they were very concerned and told me to get it to them ASAP.

I’ve had mine 10 days, and I absolutely love it. Never had an electric car before, been exclusively diesel for the last 20 years, and it’s a revelation. Only gripe I’ve got is the heaters. Seem to need to be set to 28° to get any heat out of them ??‍♂️ anyone else noticed this? Is it a thing with the mg4 or is there something wrong with my internal sensor?

Same here : albeit 24 months / 25k miles?

Just mentally subtract five from the temperature the HVAC is set at, and you're good to go. No, me neither.

Just an update on the loose rear spoiler, the dealer took the car into the workshop and checked the fixtures which were tight. They were concerned and checked others they had in their yard. Two new ones were loose where my 'old' one that was still sitting there was OK and another was OK. They are raising a 'technical issue' with MG. The car is going back in this week to be examined in more detail to support their technical issue report. Still a belting car?

Had my X Power a month now. And yes very happy with the car so far. Ok, only had it a month, and the Novelty/New car,
feeling is still there, only time will tell.
The car is lovely to drive. Looks stunning, and as for the Performance ! ?? nuff said. I have noticed I slight Vibe at a steady 70 mph, which I've told MG Chorley about. I will keep me eye on that. And it's got it's quirks/foibles. But overall love it!
???
