Ok, is this what happened, you locked the car and then for some reason to check the car is locked you tried to open the boot, if this scenario is correct then IT IS PERFECTLY NORMAL, when the car is locked you are able to open the boot without unlocking the doors.

Lock the car, place your keys about 10 mtrs away and try to open the boot, you will find it locked. Also when opening the boot with your keys on you, place or take an item out of the boot, walk away, come back without the keys and you will find it locked again.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Frank

PS When using the open the boot method to check the SOC the boot locks itself automatically and you will NOT be able to open the boot unless you have a set of keys on you.

Had a similar problem yesterday, when I shut the boot it would not click and close properly, and would bounce back ajar. Played with the latch, which was in the correct position. Made sure nothing obstructing it from closing. Read this post about having key further away , but as closing was the issue, rather than locking, it didn't help. Asked CHAT GPT and tried the suggested re-setting the sensors by dis-connecting the battery.

Then after all that, I played with the release button on the tailgate, which turned out to be stuck somehow, and problem solved. In hindsight I should have tried that first, and obviously felt pretty stupid (doh!)

Hopefully posting here, will maybe one day save someone else the frustration and embarrassment. Or at least, give you all a good laugh.

So I have just experienced this, on facelift MG5. Opened boot with car locked and then when I tried to shut it it won’t lock, just bounces back open. Tried the mechanism and all seems fine. Tried putting the key in faraday pouch and still just bouncing open. Tried locking and unlocking car with key and using button on door handle, still just bouncing open. Only thing that worked was long pressing the boot button on the remote. Drove to destination and tried it again and again only long pressing the remote button worked to get it to stay shut. The car is filthy from heavy rain and country roads yesterday so I’m hoping it is just a bit of dirt in the mechanism, will get the WD40 out when I get home.
