When I had my MG4 serviced. after the service, the car stank like a perfume factory. I found out that the replacement cabin air filter was sprayed with aftershave/perfume of some type. One thing I noticed is that there were two slots for air filters (one above the other), but I was only given one filter. After some research I found a replacement cabin air filter on Aliexpress, this was for two filters one dust filter and the other was a carbon filter.
It has made an huge difference to the air quality in the car. If anyone id interested here is the link for them.

I have been looking for a carbon filter, odd that it uses 2 different filters, normal to have 2 filters but they're normally the same
Does it say which goes where?

Hello,

I own an MG4, and I’ve been experiencing a recurring issue with the air conditioning system. Recently, I noticed a strong odor when turning on the A/C (cooling mode only). After replacing the cabin air filter, the smell disappeared temporarily. However, after leaving the car parked for a few days, the odor returned. It only lasts for a few seconds to a minute when I initially turn on the A/C, then it dissipates.

Upon investigating, I observed two air intakes behind the cabin air filter—one for external air and another for recirculated air. After some tests, I found that when the A/C is turned off, the default state of the system is to close the external air vent, effectively sealing the system.

To address this, I manually changed the air intake mode to pull in external air (with the A/C off), which did open the external vent. However, as soon as I turned off the car, the external vent closed again, leaving the air conditioning system sealed.

I suspect that residual moisture on the evaporator or radiator isn’t drying properly due to the system being sealed when the car is off. This might be the cause of the recurring odor.

Could this issue be related to the software version? I currently have R59.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem and consulted a service center? Is this behavior normal, or should it be addressed?

I’d greatly appreciate any insights or advice.

Thank you!
I also bought them but after few days the car was parking the smell returned maybe someone has encountered this too?

Resurrecting this thread to ask if you confirm this solution of double filters really is an upgrade over the original one?

I'm fed up with the smell of diesel fumes inside the cabin.

It does work pretty well. The windscreen stays cleaner and there are far less fumes coming into the car. Saying that if you are behind a diesel car that has just started and come onto the road ahead of you, there really is nothing but hitting that recirculation button. Because the catalyst has not warmed up enough, it would be pushing out twice as much smell than if it did not have one at all.
Hope this helps :-)

It did help. I'll probably go ahead and order the filter. Thank you.

Currently, I simply have the air constantly recirculating. We're plagued with old diesel cars.

I just received this same item, and oddly enough I had not checked the trusty forum for advice beforehand.

I was wondering if having two filters would put additional stress on the ventilation system/fans?

Edit: Just noticed I received two of the exact same filter. Oh well, I guess I have 2 years worth of filters, yay!

I don't see it adding any extra stress, as the fan system isn't measuring any pressure. Maybe you'll end up with a bit less air flow for the same fan speed than before, but honestly I'd guess the difference to not be noticeable.

Also, a recent video of someone placing both filters:

I have a question for you all: did you find it difficult to open the compartment that gives access to the filter?

I gave it a quick try but immediately felt I was doing something wrong... I wasn't getting anywhere and got the impression I was about to break those plastic tabs/fins.

Yes, it needs a bit of patience to slowly bend the tabs to unlock. I did it with one hand while pushing with my thumb towards the front of the car on the cover itself, so it was dislodged one by one. If it's cold I think it might be more prone to breaking, so might want to heat it a bit with a hairdryer, or do it after the car has been sleeping inside for a day or two.

Also, they new ones don't have a thick border on the short end, like the original one does.

Access to the filter is one of the easiest I've ever seen, just push the 3 tabs down until they click, and you're in. The video shown in Post10 above doesn't really show how to release the tabs, so I've done my own video.

Thank you so much for this!

By the way, the guy on the video in post 10 doesn't show it exactly because he broke the tabs (he explains that in the video, which is in Spanish).

This was the second person I've seen that had trouble with this and broke the tabs. Which is weird, because your video makes it look so simple - even I'm questioning why I wasn't able to do it...

Anyway, thanks again.
