That's a definite No from the Councils - they will not allow anything to be suspended over the pavement. Do not try any form of logical arguments about it being safer than cables on the ground or Christmas decorations strung between buildings - they aren't listening.

Something similar already exists in The Netherlands, although I wonder whether the Yoof in the picture would have been tempted to swing on it - I would have been at that age.

Completely agree! Goes against the Highway Act 1980 for starters.

As for cutting channels in a foot way, integrity of footway compromised, come a winter of freeze, then thaw from water ingress, results in even bigger potholes and more than we already endure (Plus potential of claims increasing).

I think councils have been given instructions not to be obstructive (jobsworth) over the adoption of EVs in general.

On the issue of going above the footpath there are numerous examples of signs and other street furniture going over footpaths. Greenery such as bushes and trees overhang in almost every council area, The requirement is that they should be cut back to the path boundary or the tree trunk up to a height of 2.5m before going over the path. If the arm could swing back to the wall when not in use it would be better.

On the matter of the channel I think I would want a "I" or "T" shaped insert to go in when not in use to reduce debris working its way in.

If you left the cable in some 'tard would run over it &/or nick it...

Oh well, I guess those of us without off-street parking are understandably desperate for a home charging solution...

I understand your point. Maybe street lamp chargers with cable routed along the wheel channel could be a suitable method for some. I have also seen some development of portable suitcase type chargers which may be useful also. Couple with more 7Kwh chargers on the public network (doubt they will be free forever, but capped at domestic rate) may also help. Three small measures which may well help persons without off street parking and in flats etc.

Clearly more will indeed need to be done to make this issue more convenient and less of a hassle.

May have to argue the point but if the charging gantry is NOT an obstruction then it should be allowed. This is where central government instructing councils to support the use of EV might be of benefit.

Agreed. There is still a height restriction as previously mentioned. However, this will be very small beans to be compliant. Maybe a pain if one was unfortunate enough to have a footway/cycleway outside their house. Even that being said, 2.2 metres is still easily achievable
