CD Player for our new 2024 MG4 Luxury

Would it have not been more of a benefit to buy a usb dvd/Blu-ray rldrive and just rip the CDs ? There £23 on Amazon, then just copy them to a USB storage drive that's formatted in fat32 and the. Ise use the built in media player
To be fair using the usb media option is not great in the MG4 currently. It always reverts to just playing everything, even if you have seperate folders on the usb drive. You can select a specific folder but it’s not intuitive and has to be done every single time you get in the car.

I’m pretty sure CDs would win out over the usb if it came to ease of use in the MG4, provided it had the option for CDs of course

That probably depends on your software version? When playing media from USB I can use folders, and it continues to play when I get in the car.

The last time I've used CD's in a car was back in 2011? Even still when I had cars that had a factory radio with CD, I've used USB/bluetooth (upgrading it with something like a GROM unit or something similar from Aliexpress). I really can't see why someone would prefer CD's nowadays...

People still like LPs too..

I can select folders and when I get back in, it continues the same song, but reverts the playlist to include all songs, not just the folder I was in previously. I just keep the usb stick in there as a backup if for whatever reason CarPlay won’t work. Same reason I used to have a CD in my previous car. But I guess there the CD was a backup to the usb, so… progress?

For what it’s worth I’m on SWI165-29176-1100R11 version for entertainment software, which is the latest in Australia as far as I’m aware.

CDs have objectively better sound quality than MP3s, so it's reasonable to prefer them.

However, you can rip the native .wav format files off CDs and play them directly with most (probably any) pc or android media player; the only problem is they take up more space, but with memory sizes available these days that's not too bad a limitiation.

That's not true, that depends what settings (quality) is used for ripping. Use lossless VBR or FLAC (yes, the MG4 also plays FLAC) and you can't hear the difference. Even if you don't use FLAC or lossless VBR I highly doubt that anyone above 30 years old can hear a difference if you just use a fixed 192kbps bitrate, especially on the MG4 stereo.

OK, I'm on R38 (just got it last week), MG4 Standard (51kWh).
And about LP's, that's probably just nostalgia, digital is far superior of course.

There are many filestypes supported like flac which lossless. I haven't used MP3 for a very long time

Time to move on from CDs. Get a smartphone, install spotify, use CarPlay to play all and any music you want. OR just Bluetooth from your phone. I speak as a designer of CD chips in the 80s. Sad to move on from CDs but got to move with the times. People have moved on to better things.

Yes this works fine ordered yesterday in car today.
Same for us! And obviously you've got the option of plugging the CD player into your computer to rip your CDs and copy them to a stick (as we do - loads more choice and less clutter in your car), or keep things simple and plug the CD player in directly.

I agree. I love the fact that I can just ask Siri to play whatever I fancy. No scrabbling about for CD’s, or scrolling the contents of a flash drive. My Carlinkit device connects up consistently, so everything is pretty seamless. My rolling O2 (£8.70) contract gives me 10GB monthly, and I have never been close to using my entire data allowance.

I have CD’s at home, but again, so much quicker and easier to ask Alexa to play whatever on my WiFi speakers. I couldn’t be without Spotify now!

I buy a 12 month Spotify premium gift card for £99 from Amazon, which saves £44.88 against paying £11.99 monthly DD.
