When I press P to park the car I sometimes hear a distinct "click sound" from the engine followed by the handbrake sound.
is the click normal? why isn't always present?

It will be engaging the parking pawl* then the electronic handbrake.

*A parking pawl is a device fitted to a motor vehicle's automatic transmission that locks up the transmission when the transmission shift lever selector is placed in the Park position.
MG EVs don't have a parking pawl, it doesn't have a transmission, just the electronic handbrake.

EDIT: I'm not so sure on this now as the manual says the "P" position on the selector "locks the transmission". Now whether this is a leftover typo from an ICE automatic car manual transferred over or true, IDK.

Ok i'm dumb. The problem was just me pressing too gentle the brake. Now i always press well and no more click. For instance, the sound was like to open the door without parking.
