Does anyone have the indoor granny cable and use it outdoors?

My granny cable has 'indoor' as part of its model number and has a warning to only use in a dry ventilated place but it also mentions having an IP67 rating which seems contradictory. Is anyone else in the same situation?

I use mine regularly, but I use it inside the garage where the power points are. Not sure I'd be comfortable using it outside, although I know people do.

We use ours outside regularly even when it's been showers. No problem. Never thought it may only be for inside only.
We have solar and no garage, but driveway.

I think the connector to the car will be fine, it's the plug/socket part that would need to be checked.

We have an outside covered connector, checked out by electrician. Latest fuse box, never tripped it.

A guy who lives near me used to have a granny connector led across the pavement to his car parked at the kerb. I haven't seen this for a while and I think the council probably revoked permission to do that when the public charger was installed. Recently I scoped out the front of his house, because I was curious to see if he'd had a wall box installed, but all there was, was a new-looking outdoor 13A power point which was in a wooden box which I would imagine kept rain off the socket. He must have had to use an extension lead though, so I dread to think. Nothing went on fire or melted though, as far as I know. And nobody broke their neck tripping over the cable!

It means the 3 pin plug isn't weather proof and is to be plugged in indoors.

I used my 3 pin charger outside with some protection meassures:

*extention cable is with outdoor cover on socket (rubber seal need to be cut because charger plug cable is thick)

*socket is hanging on wall so water will not splash/flow in

*socket is under 10 cm wide window sill.

*use TP-Link energy monitor to switch off power when not in use

*check weather forcast

*3 pin plug was dry when it caught by shower. I use Kasa app to turn off power when shower started just in case.

I ordered Ohme epod charger from Octopus for £899 because 7.5p/kWh Intelligent Octopus tariff is attractive.

On the odd occasion I've used my granny lead whilst away, I've also needed to use an extension lead. Each time the extension plug has either been plugged indoors (with the extension fed through a window) or plugged into a proper outdoor socket. The extension block itself though (where the granny plugs in) I simply wrapped in a plastic carrier bag and tied it off ... there have been proper rain showers whilst charging but no water ingress into the extension socket bag.

IP67 is fine in the rain as long as it doesn't get submerged. Sit it on a house brick and if you don't want it to get wet cover it with an upside down plastic storage box.

I can’t tell the difference I just use the granny charger that came with the car with a couple of long 10m extension cables charging outside across a lawn of grass. I just put a bucket of the charger if it rains

Never ever any issue of it getting too hot or anything even when it’s been on charge for over ten hours at a time

Ideally you should use an outdoor waterproof box or waterproof extension socket. The extension should be protected by an RCD.

Apologies if this has already been asked but looking for advice on a thought I’ve just had. Is it at all viable to consider not getting a home charging unit at least to begin with and instead use granny charging overnight? My typical daily commute is 15 miles there and 15 back so 30 in total...

It's unlikely to happen, but the wrong kind of mains supply fault can easily result in a fatality.

(It's been a while since I last posted, the reason being that I cancelled my order - chickened out. I still like the idea of an EV - and MG4 - but shall wait a while...)

offhand don`t know if its "indoor", but I`ve always used my granny charger "outdoors" plugged into { oh horror } extension lead {Unwound }, when its wet tucked into a plastic shopping bag under the car, with a rubber mat covering the charge port. ???

I think the charge port is designed to be used outside - otherwise we might get some canopies over public chargers! And I very much doubt the cable itself or the control box part aren't sealed waterproof. It'll only be the 13A plug they're concerned about.
