EV opposition in the media is ramping up

An escooter here in Wellington.NZ caught fire and blew the apartment up it was in yesterday. The occupant was critically injured. It blew the apartment tio bits.
The fireman cited cheap alibaba scooters from china which some are buying. The fireman also said cheap chargers they ae finding are a problem as well. The scooters dont have BMS systems on them and users are advised not to leave them plugged in once charged. They showed a video of it going off, looked scary. They didnt say if they had insurance or not..

There was another video on the news showing an e-scooter giving off a cloud on toxic fumes a few seconds before it exploded.

It's not just scooters/ebikes. A friend bought lithium wireless headphones, put them on charge while hanging on the bed post and they blew up a few minutes later with (luckily) nobody in the room.
The problem with these things is unregulated chinesium manufacture and overstretched trading standards here. We all want cheap but you can't have cheap and good.

There is a lot of pressure mounting up to have these batteries checked by a licensed third party department now it would appear.
Plenty of coverage on the news and in the press recently, demanding it's implementation.

Just saw that motoring journalist Quentin Cooper and Fully Charged's Robert Llewellyn have started "STOP burning things" - a campaign to correct misinformation about EVs

So after watching the latest update from the guys on Stop burning Stuff video above I had a little rant in there comment section on YouTube about something I’m see more and more of and below is what I wrote.
Les.

Thank you for the update on this issue I’m an active member of the MGEVs forum and podcasts that you may of heard of, and there is a very active thread running in that forum on this subject and the too programs you have so far put out so thank you for your broadcast.
In this currant program you talk about tyres and towards the end of that part of the chat Dan, I think it was who mentioned about vehicles waiting outside of schools around 22:30 into the video, and on a cold day being able to see the pollution coming out of the exhaust, well if I may I would like to add another similar situation to this which I think can be even worse, people sitting in cars waiting which I see more and more happening today and have never heard mentioned.
And that is the large at times amount of vehicles queuing at drive thro food outlets such as costa KFC and McDonald’s my local McDonald’s a few evenings ago I counted over 20 vehicles queuing for food orders I think at times this can be far worse than schools as it goes on all day and late into the evenings many times and not just twice a day to collect or delivery children to school that I agree is bad but these drive thro are in my opinion far worse and something needs to be done about that as well.
So rant over and please keep up your great work.
I forgot to mention I’m one off the converted owning an MG5 for almost 3 years and my wife in an MG4 for the last 8 months and there is no going back to fossil fuel vehicles at Any costs
Thank you

'Stop burning stuff' - we don't want any misinformation :ROFLMAO:

I was reading a piece in AirQualityNews that mentioned sub standard chargers & there was a significant amount of battery fires on e-scooters due to mistreatment i.e. hitting kerbs & DIY to the e-scooter to make them go faster. It’s time to act on Lithium-ion battery safety in micromobility

ICE Vehicles Causing Fire Havoc

The recent calamaty surrounding fires on ships carrying ICE vehicles is now being seen as a more serious problem than thought. ICE vehicle manufacturers are now warning owners not to park near populated areas, houses, places of work or any confined space. This is due to their cars bursting into flames. Once on fire the combustibles (petrol, diesel, LPG (not hydrogen cause they couldnt find any) etc) ensure that the fire is extremely difficult to put out. Electric vehicles are not included in the release.

I notice the BBC's photo heading the article is of "A Hyundai Kona electric SUV".

Perfect.
Noticed that to, lead with a story stating car fires and use an EV for heading picture. Also reading down the article it does not explicitly state EVs are not impacted. Sure we all know they don't have oil pumps but the lay person may not.
