EV opposition in the media is ramping up

Ah but my five is fettled, ready to go,
Where it’ll end up I really don’t know,
I’ll go through Glen Coe and on to the Fort
Then maybe to Mallaig such a fine port
I might catch a ferry, hop over to Skye
I’ve taken the midge creams, you just never know
But the sun screen I’ve left I don’t think I’ll fry
It looks fairly pleasant in western glens,
But there’s snow, ice and gales on top of some Bens.

A bit miffed after last weeks fantastic driving and charging experience. I went 9 miles to Tescos today with about 40 miles in the battery. I swung past the four charge bays to find each one hosting an ICE wagon. I parked across two of them for a few minutes. A guy came out and straight away shouted at me “what the hell are you parking there for?“
I pointed to the signs about charging bays.
“Oh sorry I didn’t notice that - but I was only in for a couple of items.
I was a bit thick and think I made it awfully awkward for the poor soul to extract his car. ?
I plugged in and had a coffee and fruit scone then a wander round collecting my groceries and a moan at customer services about the ICEing (more or less ignored)
Came out and the other three cars were still there.

First ICEing I’ve encountered for a long time.

I encountered one in Tongue. The usual single CPS charger with two bays, in a pub car park, at the end of the row. The left-hand bay was ICEd, although the right-hand bay was free (looking face on to the charger). The thing is, if I'd parked Caliban in the free bay, the cable would not have reached the charging port. I needed the bay that was ICEd.

I contemplated going into the pub and making a scene. But on the other hand, I wasn't there to charge. I was just looking for somewhere to turn because I'd spotted a more interesting road than the one I was on. All I needed was to back into the vacant bay to make the turn, and the vacant one was plenty good enough for that.

Still think it might have been cathartic to have gone in and had that row. But then I'd have had to take on charge I didn't need (I'd charged in Durness) and sit in the pub with a Coke while I did, and I had quite a long way to go. So I wimped out.

Nevertheless it it was simply cheek in Tongue parking there ?‍♂️

A bit of a useless charger if the cable doesn't reach in one of the bays.

Not necessarily. I'm not sure about that particular charger, but a lot of these CPS chargers only allow one plug to be used at a time. You use the bay that gets your charging port next to the cable, and the other bay can act as a waiting space if need be. The village charger here is like that.

That’s true of the CCS or Chademo plugs - only one can be used array time - but the other (type 2) can be used along with one of the other two.

That's true for these chargers I think. (Not for the one here - that can only have one plug in use at a time.) I was just thinking about DC charging. The fact remains that if you want to DC charge you need access to the bay that gets your charging port next to the plug.

If I'd actually wanted to charge there I'd have tried to see if the cable would have reached in the bay that was vacant, but I'm pretty sure from experience that it wouldn't have. I'd have had to go into the pub and try to find the owner of the Land Rover and ask him to move.

I saw this pop up on my recommended videos and thought "here we go again". The guy in the red cap is a bit of a knob, however, he did show some humility at the end. Not what I was expecting. :)

Unless you were planning to bag the crap out of the whole EV concept, why would you buy a Porsche as your first electric car?
I got to around the 11 min mark, but only by watching at 2x speed, about the only bit of truth that came out of his mouth was that a knob was behind the wheel .........

No doubt you could find the most expensive method of recharging your EV, but you could also run the most expensive fuel in you ICE powered vehicle and drive it so it used the max amount of fuel .... so any comparison this bloke did would be meaningless, because he has a barrow to push and reality is never going to get in the way of what he thinks is a good story.

Just a quick question, an EV in good condition, when it comes to reselling it after say 4 yrs, is the depreciation rate in a % of purchase price, any worse, equal to or better than, the equivelant ICE powered vehicle?

One other question, is petrol/diesel really cheap over there and electricity incredibly expensive .... or this bloke not actually dealing with reality and more remembers how much it cost for fuel 3 yrs ago in an economical buzz box?

I had a go at him in the comments, and so have quite a few others. I note that more and more people are challenging him in the comments. Not just people with EVs, but people who know how PCP and lease deals work and were unconvinced by his apparent ignorance of the deal he signed up to.

He's "always had Porsches". So, more money than sense then. Given how many cars he says he's had, he can't keep any one of them very long. He didn't like the previous Porsche he had, a Macan I think, and was very keen to change it - so keen that he considered getting rid of it and acquiring an interim set of wheels while his Taycan was being built.

He quite fancied the idea of "the latest technology" without apparently knowing much about it. He had a test drive and was blown away by the driving experience. He had to wait months for the Taycan but didn't get a home charger fitted while he was waiting. I don't know what was stopping him using his granny charger, but he started off as a bit of an innocent abroad just using DC chargers. He faffed around, not knowing what he was doing, and moaned about the RFID cards and the apps and didn't even understand the difference between AC and DC charging as far as I can tell.

After a couple of videos like this he seems to have realised from the way the comments were going that he had a lot of Daily Mail reading anti-EV people on his channel, and that playing up to them was the way to increase his viewing figures. He embarked on a campaign of making public charging look far more difficult than it really is, moaning about every little thing, and encouraging his acolytes to post "EVs suck" in the comments.

I don't know how much longer he can keep this up. It will be interesting to see if he gets another EV in a year when his lease is up. He loves the car and I don't think he wants to go back to petrol, but what will be his excuse if he gets another Taycan? Might be a better strategy to switch to petrol and bow out of a genre which probably doesn't have an alwful lot of mileage left in it after 2025.

As we know. Best way to convert a hesitant or even an anti is to get them in one.

I saw the title on this video and thought "here we go again". However, it turns out to be a de-bunk of claims on a conspiracy site who "hijacked" a study and cherry picked conclusions totally out of context.

A good example of how investigative journalism should be done. :)

Right now, depreciation is heavier for many EVs than ICE, but it was the other way around 18 months ago and it will probably change again, EV secondhand values have started to rise.
