Fast Charge Rate

Just completed our first long distance road trip, and the charging rate seemed low to me. On a 250 kW charger at 64% charged I was getting 60kW. On a 180kW charger at 70% I was at 52kW.

I did not get to charge the car when the battery was at a low percentage. So perhaps you only get the fastest 144kW charge rate at low battery charge percentage.

I am used to a Tesla, and I think they have the whole fast charging thing figured out, to maintain high rates for a long period of time.

Interested to hear what other people are seeing.

How long did it take to get from 64% to 80%? I think thats normal for MGs. The rate is fastest at low capacity way below 50%. Unfortunately it will be like this until MG put the new gen CATL batteries in their cars which have much faster charging and higher capacity/.

I'd guess the Cyberster has the same charging curve as the 77kWh MG4.

And has a better charging curve than my previous EV - Renault Megane eTech.

the charge rate is weak, which disappoints me now. I would have expected a value between 20 and 25 minutes from 10% to 80%.

Why? MG are clear about charge times.

Yes, you will only get max charging speeds below 50% SoC, this is well known with this battery pack design - also used on the MG4.

Frankly, I'd rather have very good battery longevity than very fast charging. (Which wears them out much faster) As with most people buying this type of car, it's going to be charged at home almost all the time and will require rapid charging away from home extremely rarely.

Totally disagree. Tesla, Hyundai/Kia & Porsche charge much much faster, and in the case of Tesla in particular, they have millions of miles worth of data with the batteries pretty much unaffected by regular rapid charge sessions.
This is a roadster for Euro trips etc. And fairly fast charging at this price point is a minimum requirement. It does not have to be 250kW+ but 150-180kW with a better charge curve would have been excellent. I love the look of this car and its features and even its price point, but am holding back for now (made easier as it has been released at the onset of winter in the UK) to wait for software and other bugs to be ironed out. That reported charge curve (as for the MG4 ER) is pretty poor for a £55-£60k car. Perfectly fine for a £25-£30k car though. When you start selling products at this price point, MG have to step up a notch. Including dealer back up and product support, which I am watching closely on forums like these.
I get that, like most EVs they are charged at home, but it is when you are away form home then things like faster charging, come in to their own. (Hyundai Ioniq 5 P45 owner here)

Yes. With the MG4 the low price justifies it, great range for the money, etc... But with the Cyberster it is only competitively priced, so expectations will be much higher.

Fair point, although none of the makers you mention offer an EV convertible GT car (yet), so let's wait and see what they offer for the same price or what their price is for better tech.

Plus very rapid charging is really only needed for long distance commuting (about 1% of people these days). Most people doing road trips can wait a few more minutes for a charge, or will be having a meal while the car charges.

Yes, that's a fair expectation at that price as is:

• Heatpump
• 11kW or 22kW AC charging
• OTA updates.
• Included mats and other freebies.
• Automatically dimming screens.

And probably several more that they have skipped.
