Full Size Spare Wheel

When I picked up my MG4 the rep told me they don't provide a spare because of the extra weight of the car because of the batteries. Apparently standard alloy wheels aren't strong enough to cope with the weight and instant torque from electric cars.
Might be a load of nonsense though!

It's a complete load of tosh. So you should never carry anything in the boot that weighs as much as a spacer wheel?

Spare wheels haven't been a thing for a while. When I had a flat in my Golf the guy who rescued me asked if I had a spare wheel, which surprised me because I thought it was a legal requirement. Apparently not, or not any more. Then (driving Caliban) I had to rescue a friend in a diesel Nissan (not particularly new) who had a tyre so badly damaged that gunk she had been supplied with instead of a spare obviously wasn't going to cut it.

I think he was getting a bit mixed up between rims and tyres ? here TBH.
With EVs they tend to favour the use of XL (reinforced) rated tyres.
Yes - primarily due to the extra weight of the vehicle over a similar ICE counterpart.
This is not exclusive to EVs though, as some larger ICE vehicles (including vans etc) also have XL rated tyres fitted.
Not including a spare started with the introduction of using a space saver combo.
Then manufactures decided to remove the body shell wheel well pressing in the boot.
This is when the inflation kits and a mini 12 volt pump became the norm.
Removing the spare (especially a full size steel wheel and tyre) reduced the weight of the car also.
Anything that can reduce weight is seen as a great opportunity to boost the fuel economy/drag and therefore the efficiency of the car.
Plus it cuts down on production costs at the same time of course.

I am weighing up the purchase of a MG4.

For the past 8 years I have driven an  MG6 and loved it. However, in the last 2 years my tyres have blown out 3 times in around 19 months.
The tyres were not old. Twice I picked up either a nail or screw, and the 3rd occasion a peice of shrapnel which cut a 2cm gash in my tyre.

Twice, I used the emergency space-saver tyre in my car, which allowed me to travel to my tyre supplier of choice rather than being at the mercy of having to deal with a unknown tyer shop.

On the 3rd time as I was over 100k from home I had to choose a BJ tyre mart, where the same brand replacement cost an additional $120 (no wonder they advertise buy 3 get 1 free).

I am not fond of the goo kit, as it renders the tyre unrepairable.

Look, a flat can happen anywhere, any time, and there always 4 possibilities carrying us every time we drive. Salesmen explain the lack of the spare as "where do they fit the battery?" and "figures say we only a flat every 7 years". Well if that was true I've had 21 years worth already, so I'm good to go! BELIEVE THAT, I've got a 2016 MG6 you can have for just $41,999.00.

Me, I'm carrying a space-saver along with my $120 12v power jack and power wrench kit. Australian roads are too hard and distances between towns too long to rely on a goo kit and MG road assist, if I'm in network range.

I agree with the belt and braces approach.
For my MG5, I have the Goo, a Space Saver spare and a Full Size spare!
Same here, I have the supplied MG goo kit, another can of tyre repair goo that came with a paint protection kit on my previous ZS, one of those plug kits and a space saver spare kit that I got with the ZS.

The MG4 has limited storage, so a full size tyre is impractical. The other thing that turns me off the goo is that a replacement bottle costs around $55. This on top of paying for a tyre that could have been repaired. I do feel MG should rethink the goo. If they offered a practical SS wheel kit it would definitely lead to more sales. Even an after-sale kit for around $200 would be more logical.

You can buy a replacement goo kit or just the refill much cheaper from Autobulbs direct.

Thanks, here in Australia a after market goo is around $25, a nail or screw hole plug repair $40-$60, much cheaper than a new tyre.

Similar ? !.
Just the full size spare to complete the set.
My OCD really appreciates more options ?.
I have a little EV back up collection going on.
12 volt battery booster / Type 2 charging cable / space saver kit / V2L cable / 10mm spanner and a cuddly toy ? from MG no less ??.

Salesmen, weight??? A space saver is Less than 1% so, the range drops by that, in the real world this means no real difference. Let's discuss "real world".
Pick up a piece of shrapnel cutting a 2cm hole in your tyre meaning the goo kit is useless, ring MG assist, wait for hours, get towed and have the tyre changed at the tyre retailer or perhaps a MG DEALERSHIP, this is EXPENSIVE and my estimation would take 4-6 hours out of your day. A space saver tyre change is 15-20mins, drive to your choice of tyre supplier still inconvenient but far less time and cost.

Make that 30 minutes for a 75 year old guy in the rain tonight please.

I should point out, that a Space Saver tyre can be found at almost every car wrecking yard, you only need the wheel as you already have the tyre changing equipment - only a compatible wheel hub (ie 5 holes not 4 and 17" or 18" wheel) the staff at the yard will assist in the correct selection. As for storage it depends on how creative you are. For cleanliness etc I would purchase a carry bag/cover, only a few $ on line and simply store it in the boot, but, I'm not concerned too much by cargo space, 99% of the time (groceries, Golf Bag, luggage etc) I can pack around it.

65 yo here, with bad right knee and left hip, so I take my time as well, not responsible for weather conditions.

Does anyone have a clue where I could buy an MG4 Trophy wheel from, dealer says no ? Can't find a matching wheel pattern anywhere. I really don't want to have to buy a set of five. I WANT a spare wheel, not some useless gunk and a stupid little compressor!
Hi, I have just bought a second hand Mk5 Golf space saver wheel from facebooks market place, for £30 that fits my 2023 MG 4 Trophy. Its a 17" diameter wheel, 5 stud x 14mm bolt holes, 122mm PCD and 57.1mm centre bore hole and fits perfect.

Remember, if you are using a VAG ( VW ) set up, you will need four VW wheel bolts WHEN / IF you are required to fit the VW wheel / tyre you have acquired.
The countersink angle of the MG wheel bolts are at a different angle to the counter sink bolts angle of the VW rim.

And that, my friend, is why I want a 'proper' spare wheel.

I bought a space saver for ours,

sounds like rubbish IMO

Yes, I can confirm the vw golf 7.5 wheel fits nicely on the essence/Trophy 64 at 5x112 however it is only a 7.5inch rim and narrower tyre rather than the 8inch of ours. The same size 235 tyre as ours will fit ok but I haven't got any vw bolts yet which I can confirm have a slightly different countersink angle. Thanks for the tip Lovemyev.
