Hello I have an MG4 for only a couple of days and come to use the granny charger for the first time at home. No extension cables just straight from plug socket out the window. It says “connected- not charging” and I cannot get it to charge. Does anyone have any tips ?!

Have you tried different sockets or with or without an extension lead just to see if it works?
Is it ok on a rapid or destination EVSE (charge point)?

I’ve tried 2 sockets so far but not with an extension lead ( I believe I need a slightly bigger millimetre cable?)
It’s charged fine on both a rapid one and a wall box one at a friends house.
Thanks for the reply !

Does the granny have any lights indicating its status? The MG one does a quick self test, indicated by flashing red, yellow and green led, followed by yellow only until connected then yellow and green when charging.

I was tricked in the early days. the car and charger need to be off when cable plugged in.
If you just driven in, lock car then unlock it.
Plug in then turn on granny charger

I’ve just done exactly that and still “connected - not charging” .
The box has a power light and I’ve tried it in 3 different sockets so far and still not working sadly

Has the granny charger only got a power light? Have you checked for a charging schedule in the car/app? As you have an SE SR the car should always charge to 100%.

Can you tell it to start charging either from the app or inside the car? Other than that try the charger on another car/another granny on your car.

Good morning try charging from your phone sometimes mine won't charge so I set it off on my phone thanks D

Have you got it to work yet? I've used the granny charger for 18mths and it can be problematic some times but I think this is the car getting confused rather than any issue with the charger. One thing I have noticed is that it doesn't like having the charger plugged in when it's turned on, so always turn off at the wall.

I’ve tried all these suggestions and my Granny charger won’t work either! Will try it on my son’s Mitsubishi to see if it’s the charger or the car.

the car will say 'connected but not charging' when the plug has not been pushed in completely. Disconnect and try again. Sometimes the car may need to be locked and unlocked again to reset it after this error.

Does the Mitsubishi gave a type2 connector?
Good point. I’ll know tomorrow.

Done that. No joy.

You say you've just bought the 4. I've had mine for a few weeks and initially I was charging from a 13A granny I'd got cheap from Amazon. I got REALLY frustrated trying to get the flippin' thing to work.

It was my first electric car and I hadn't appreciated that unlike charging any normal battery (where you just plug in a charger, connect a battery and it starts charging) charging an EV involves a two-way confirmation. The charger needs to be ready to supply, and the vehicle ready to receive.

I found it would only start charging from the car infotainment screen. Once plugged in and ready, I'd open the dashboard charging screen, click 'Lock' to lock in the plug, then click 'Start Charging'.

Once it started charging I could get out and lock the vehicle. BUT if you unlock the car again the charging stops and won't restart unless you again select 'Lock' and 'Start'!

Bear in mind this was just my experience over a few charges before I got an 11kW 7kW wall box which the car seems to get on with better. My car is also still on R33 software which is really glitchy in many areas... hoping to get it updated soon.

Oops! ^^^ 7kW wall box, not 11kW ?
There is a similar thread on the MG HS PHEV forum with the same issue.

I had the problem with mine, it said connecting but did not charge. The answer with the granny charger is that the cable weight distorts the plug and it will not lock. No lock so no charge.

I found that if you wedge the plug cover under the plug to take the weight of the socket it works. I have done this on four charges and it works every time.

I understand that others have had the socket changed under warranty and that had also resolved the problem.

Good luck.
