I hate my MG4!

We sold our Trophy back to the dealer after a year. So many issues that software updates and even a replacement infotainment screen did not resolve.
It’s a good looking car which drives well when everything is working, but almost every day there were problems, including 2 extremely scary, unprovoked emergency stops.
So we took a financial hit but were able to buy a nearly new Hyundai Kona EV for almost the same money which has been completely trouble free. My 18 month old Kia EV 6 has also been completely trouble free.
MG just need to do better and also sort out their customer care.

Hi there all! Now I know that using the MG Forum to say I hate my MG4 is controversial, and I certainly don’t intend to upset anyone, but please hear me out…

Firstly, I know that ‘hate’ is a strong word. And if I’m honest, I don’t always hate my car. When all’s going well, and it hasn’t done anything to annoy me in the previous 30 minutes, I do actually very much enjoy driving it. It’s my first electric car, and I really like the smooth, rapid acceleration and lack of gear changes. But - and it’s a very big ‘but’ - there are just too many problems with it. Some major and some minor.

I’ve compiled a list below of the faults and grievances that spring to mind. There may be others that I’ve forgotten but I’ll try to edit this post as and when anything else pops up from the recesses of my brain.

I’d be really interested to hear from you all in the community to get your thoughts and to read about your experiences.

Some background… I received my MG new in July 2023. I very quickly noticed problems, which is why I joined this excellent Forum in the first place. I thought ‘surely it’s not just me that’s noticing these things?’, and I was so pleased to find many like minded souls. I emailed MG UK with my initial concerns, and they replied very quickly, but all they could recommend was a software update (for a new car that I’d only just received. Thanks MG…). I diligently booked the car in under warranty and got the update. But alas, as far as I could tell, nothing had changed. So forlornly I pretty much gave up. I resigned myself to the fact that I’d have to put up with this hugely frustrating car for the next three years, the length of my lease. And so now, after 16 months of ownership, this list shows what really, REALLY grinds my gears(!). I know from reading certain forum posts that some of these problems have supposedly been sorted, but again, I’d be really interested to hear which ones and how successful the fix has been.

Important note: I have asked MG to update the software on my car (R33) but my local dealership believes none of the below means they can do it under warranty, and I have no intention of paying the quoted £120 to get it done.

LKA is overly aggressive and frankly dangerous, as all owners are very aware of. Should never have been allowed on the car in that state. I always have to turn it off before driving for safety's sake.

Infotainment sometimes doesn't register touches, despite beeping to register a selection.

DAB Radio sometimes doesn't find radio stations on start, and won't update the available list all journey, meaning no (or very limited) radio.

No sound from the speakers after pressing ‘play’ button on radio after getting in the car. I have to cycle to another input then back to radio, and it suddenly bursts into life.

1 x emergency stop for no reason, on a straight, clear road, though with one car approaching on the other side. I was indicating right while slowing to turn behind the approaching car (I’m in the UK) but remained fully in my lane. Happily at slow speed and no one behind me.

Air Conditioning occasionally doesn't work at all. Magically resets itself when the car's been off and locked for a time. Making for some sweaty summer journeys. Miserable before arriving at work.

In colder weather the car sometimes steams up very easily, requiring full blower all journey (probably same fault as above).

Loses 3 or 4 mph around shallow bends when using ACC.

Ridiculously aggressive braking to maintain gap in front when using ACC. Dangerous with cars behind on a motorway. I rarely use ACC because of this.

Speed limit recognition often shows incorrect limit, rendering it pointless. Flashes constantly if just 1mph over. I always turn it off.

No interior light in rear. I often have to get my phone torch out when it's dark to help my children buckle up. My kids hate the car because of this.

Rear seat belt plugs 'disappear' into seat when trying to plug the seat belt in. Again, my kids absolutely hate this.

Auto dipping headlights have a mind of their own (and not in a positive way!). I always have to go manual to avoid dangerously blinding other drivers/cyclists/pedestrians.

Regularly have to 're-pair' mobile phone Bluetooth connection.

MG App often won't show any information from the car (i.e. battery percentage) despite good WiFi connection on both car and phone.

Rear under tray has warped and now needs replacing.

There must be others you've experienced that I’ve missed/forgotten about. Please do let me know!
i’ve experienced all that you’ve said except for warped under tray… bluetooth issues might get fixed after updates…

My MG4 SE LR is 26 months old and on 30,000 miles and I have had no issues of any concern. I always turn LKA off, put AEB on alert, as I would for any new car. I never use ACC, and I think the auto headlights work well. Tyre wear is better than on my previous diesel cars. My wife's Nissan Leaf has had more issues that my MG. The dealer in the Forest of Dean is as good as any I have used for any make of car.

They can do it, I had a 5 before the Xpower, the LKA was spot on, you could set this (on/off on the stalk) set the ACC on, select the distance range and it would drive down the motorway practically on it’s own with just the steering wheel alert coming on every 30 seconds. Now the 4 is the complete opposite having to turn every thing off, maybe BYD will be my next choice.

Thanks for your helpful post. I've just ordered an MG4 EV Trophy long-range. Your post hasn't put me off. Hopefully, some issues won't occur, as the vehicle will have the latest software update. I will check! However, I don't understand why software updates are not done under warranty when they correct faults and safety-critical issues.

Software updates are applied under warranty if faults are reported/found. That's the experience of two MG4 owners that I know. They've had very few issues and no more than the new ICE cars that they've had in the past.

I have had my MG4 Trophy ER since Sept 2023 and am basically very pleased with it. I think most of Charlie T's complaints are on the trivial side.

I disagree, when you get a new car it should work, 100% and be 100% usable from a HMI point of view. I shouldn't have to put my finger just to the right of the position on the screen to make it register the "keypress".

The issue of the LKA coming back on when the auto light switch was a Trophy-only issue I thought had been fixed with a software update.

Yep, I got around this inadvertently by locking the screen to the "dark setting" and had never experienced this issue until I experimented with it.

I find it hard to stay positive about this car sometimes.

Charlie, I'll be interested to hear of your dealer experience and the results of the software update. Is the car going in to Richmond Southampton? I bought mine outright from Richmond Portsmouth. I got them to fix the warped understray but haven't yet requested updates to the software. Why? Because what I use works as long as I make a number of preflight settings. The AC works, it charges at home OK. I switch LKA and speed sign recognition off, put AEB on low sensitivity, don't use ACC at all, don't use Android Auto. I've had my seat belt spontaneously unbuckle on two occasions so I'm being careful to check it.. Mines the SE LR, not the Trophy.
I wish you well trying to get the s/W update!

There does seem to be a trend developing where some are saying that at the end of their lease/pcp deals they will dump MG . this will lead to a glut of 3-4 year old cars on the auction market and the low values they will fetch. MG won't care, they will have by then shiny new models out with enticing deals ready to catch the new batch of EV converts, the now old models phased out , not being able to compete on price with their secondhand siblings. Not just MG I think! The marketing strategy seems to be aimed at the well heeled wanting either by choice/ peer pressure or desperation in changing to newer and more profit making models (Upgrade Sir, suits you ).
For us , in it for the long run , plebs, will there still be updates available or will it become like Windows XP,7,8 and 10? where support will cease to exist.
Built in obsolescence? You have had it how long sir,? Blimey!
You can't get the updates now newer mind after 4 years😡

I find it hard to stay positive about this car sometimes.
No new car goes in to production 100% perfect but it's how those issues are rectified that affect us as owners and influence our views on the brand and how we communicate our experience to others.

Yeah and for the most part MG are atrocious at the rectifying bit

The only other new car I had was a Focus ST, it developed a few faults down the line that needed fixing but for the first year and a half it was 100% fault free, and mine was one of the first few thousand (as I got the free pro-drive track and driver tutoring day). The the number of faults and niggles on the MG4 seems to be higher than would ordinarily acceptable, both software and hardware many of which smack of "inadequate testing as we have to get this car to market".

Don't forget your Focus ST was not a new car but a development of a car that was in production for many years before.

There must be others you've experienced that I’ve missed/forgotten about. Please do let me know!

I sympathise with you, I had all the same issues and my car lasted just over a year before I got fed up and sold it on ( luckily / unluckily I got a bank loan for it, which meant I could get rid whenever, but did lose several grand - could have been worse)

I was really annoyed with it by the end, I had trusted all the professional reviewers saying trust the new Chinese cars they are just as good as the euro stuff and I thought with a 7 year warranty what could go wrong……

The software / bugginess was the worse bit by far, if it was just the hardware stuff going that went wrong on me I might have held on. But the sofrware issues were overwhelming, never fully fixed on updates and I lost confidence in the car - I was having random brake warning triangles near the end including during trade in time 😮

I ended up getting a E-Golf with smaller battery and as it’s all could afford and I wanted a solid car with proper buttons and reliable software - VW ID3 had none of those things at the time, think the software is okay nowadays though. I have no regrets with the e-golf, it’s a slightly plain but dependable car that just works and looks classy/timeless inside and out imo.

We’ve been lucky. The new MG dealership in the nearest major town (Mâcon; we’re based in France) is exceptionally responsive and helpful – I’ve dropped in there a couple of times with minor issues (tyre pressure warnings, ongoing “service required” warning) without an appointment and they’ve sorted them then and there.

I love my MG4, but I have a ritual: I switch off LKA, traffic sign recognition and auto-headlights as soon as I get in the car, and I switch over to Sport mode (because the brakes are so much more responsive). I keep my front collision detect setting at the lowest level, which avoids the sudden braking phenomenon described by others (you can switch it off completely, as it happens, but actually, it has helped me on a couple of occasions, so I don’t). The rear collision detect feature is brilliant, and has helped me to avoid running over crazed pedestrians walking directly behind the car even as I am reversing on several occasions (France is the exemplar of this behaviour).

But these software issues are not confined to MG; I’ve had to switch off LKA in hire cars as well (notably Kia and Hyundai, although I would agree that both have a better LKA system than MG!). I find it helpful to regard my car as essentially a giant smartphone, with similar quirks and issues; this has caused me to adopt a much more zen-like mindset. Driving the car is always a pleasure; only very occasionally does awkward braking cause me to utter an Unfortunate Word (or two). I have no idea what software version I’m on.

For the price, I still think you honestly can’t do better than an MG. My father-in-law drives an MG5 and is very pleased with it – again, despite minor quirks.

I have had most of the issues described. Got my car a few months ago. I am overall disappointed although there are some things that I like.

In addition to those mentioned:
  • 3 times I have had sudden breaking/stopping when reversing slowly (to the point where I have to get out to check i haven't hit something!) Safety feature but way too sensitive! Gives me a heart attack!
  • Many times sudden breaking with on coming cars.
  • One time reversing camera didn't come on, it was pitch black and I had to rely on the sensors.
  • Footwell doesn't seem to get very warm and I have cold feet.
  • For ages I wasn't able to connect phone to the car for phone calls (apart form a few random contacts!) I have finally resolved this by having wireless Auto Android and using Hey Google instead of the car's voice activation.
  • I also had issues with linking Sportify and maps (I like to use Wayz) to the car. Again resolved with the wireless Auto Android. Still sometimes doesn't automatically connect to Spotify though.
  • The screen often doesn't go dark at night. I was told to turn off and on the auto lights which does solve it but its a faff and not great for other drivers as lights are briefly off!
  • Windows randomly opening slightly. Now seems to be resolved thanks to someone on here explaining how to re-set them.
  • I agree that no lights in the back of the car is a real pain and a very basic omission. The ones in the front aren't great either. Don't stay on long and not very bright.
  • The USB and C ports are in a really inconvenient place and have to scrabble around to look under the protruding bit (sure it has a proper name!) to plug in. Now I have the Wireless Auto Android this is not such an issue.
I usually keep a car for about 10 years but not sure I will with this one. Its a shame, as it drives really nicely and has some good features. I'm hoping most of the issues can be resolved with updates. I was told one is due shortly.... We will wait and see!!

Misting shouldn't be an issue providing you leave the AC on permanently, with a quick Full Demister blast to clear early morning fogging.

I mostly get a very thin but dark layer of moisture on the entire winscreen from the inside - sometimes even when the AC is on and max temp!

Doesn't always happen but if it does I h ave to pull over and give the full screen a physical wipe get the moisture off and then it usually stays off.
