Hi all,

Bought my mg5 ev (Facelift, exclusive, long range) July 2023, new, and I love it. Apart from the infotainment, that is. It can be flaky and when it is, it's just super frustrating, as Murphy's law has it, it stops working when you really need it.

I tend to use CarPlay mostly with Waze for the maps and Apple Music. Majority of the time it works absolutely fine especially for relatively short trips / 30 mins or less.

The longer I drive, the more likely the screen will start lagging - ie. starts to run 10-30 seconds behind real time - the car's position in the GPS app e.g. Waze is where you were 30 seconds ago; while the GPS audio is still giving directions that is up to date. When it's lagging, touching the screen also shows this lag behaviour, that is, you touch a button and it won't do the action for a while after.

After the lagging, the next stage is the screen just switches off. Not always, but a lot of the time. And stays off. You will still hear your GPS directions or whatever music you have playing. It doesn't self-right as you drive; the solution is park the car and either go have a 15 minute break with the car switched off or disconnect the battery. After that, the hard reset seems to restore the normal function of the infotainment screen.

Searching through the forum, there seems to be a number of threads referring to similar issues e.g. Infotainment screen has gone blank

Does this ring a bell with other owners? Is it affecting everyone, or just a few of us?

Are there any workarounds that you can do in the car without having to stop?

My first annual service is in three weeks time so I want to be able to have my ducks in a row with them to try get this fixed. Will a firmware update sort it? From the System Menu, I can see I currently have these firmware versions:

MPU: SWI83-29867-1300R12
MCU: 83.3.4.8

If this is a firmware solvable issue, what firmware update should I be telling the dealer I want done?

Any advice much appreciated. Thanks!

FL5 Trophy driver using carlinkit 5 - google maps, Apple Maps fine. Other mapping apps seem to get terrible lag issues.
That’s good to know. Long time using Waze and never even thought it could be an app specific issue. I will certainly see if I can reproduce these issues on Google Maps or Apple Maps.

Actually it can, here in Ireland MG only sells the Long range FL model in two trim levels Excite (SE) & Exclusive (Trophy)..
That’s how they are marketed in Ireland. It’s an exclusive facelift.

My apologies, I stand corrected, I failed to notice that you were posting from a non UK location.
Difficult to keep up with the different names in differing locations.

Same here in UK, they only sell the facelift now but they used to sell the pre-facelift in Ireland didn't they as I followed this guy on Youtube MG5 EV Owner review

Correct, what I meant MG don’t sell the SR FL (LFP battery) here.

I have not had your issues my MG5 LR but I think the infotainment is disappointing for other reasons. The following text is part of feedback I emailed this April to MG UK Customer Services.

I am generally pleased with the car... My major gripe is about the display screen when used for playing music from a memory stick.

The text used to display details of a track is far too small for me to read without lifting my distance spectacles. Not only that, despite the size of the screen and the amount of empty space on it, longer track information is scrolled, which means it cannot be taken in at a glance. The image for each track could also be larger.

There is also a button for text. My mp3 tracks mostly have lyrics incorporated into the file rather than the text as a separate file. None of my tracks display any lyrics (or other text) when played in the car.

So what is the purpose of the text button? And if the display is going to provide lyrics, it would be safer if it did this only when the car was stationery.

I have another suggestion if the software for the display is going to be upgraded. Many cars have more than one driver and it so happens my wife and I have different tastes in music. The USB socket for the memory stick is not easy to access so swapping memory sticks is not a good solution. I am sure it would be relatively easy for the system to recognise two or more folders of music on the memory stick and provide a touch screen option for switching between folders. [end of email]

The lyrics makes suspect software from another setting has been used for car. I alo suspect the screen design was not thought through.

Playing music from USB is kinda old school and support will be at best rudimentary.

The current focus of most car makers seems to be the seamless integration of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

I had a strange thing happen on Friday, I finished a call (hands free) as i landed home and switched off at the same time. When I opened the drivers door to exit the radio came on so I shut the door and the radio went off. I did this several times, It was quite funny. So switch on car then off solved the fault.
no further problems so far.
My MG5 is an pre FL model Exclusive. Love the vehicle.

Listening via a memory stick is what my wife and I want to do. If MG provide that option, at least make it user-friendly.

One reason for our choice is that it is easy to load tracks from our Windows laptops onto a memory stick and perform any subsequent editing of tracks. If we wanted to play albums, we might consider using smart phones. But we prefer to play singles and this is very straightforward when they are loaded onto a memory stick.
