Issue resolved; as per message further into the thread, with ionity you have to activate/pay before plugging in not after, like most other charger units/providers.

Original message [I’ve really just one word… IONITY.
Is it me or does mg5 just not like the IONITY chargers?

My old PFL 5 was okay on Ionity, in fact it was okay on all chargers that I had tried.

My Prefacelift 5 usually behaves itself with the IONITY chargers, although I think i've only used it with taller narrower ones with the vertical screen orientation (The ones with the halo around the top), I think they do have a different design in some places (although i'm not sure if the UK has any of the other type)

Ionity Chargers have always been pretty consistently good for me - but no recent experience I must admit. I've used their app which is one of the few ones that let me see the real time charge as I sip my coffee..
I just returned from a trip and installed another two apps - Shell and Instavolt - as neither liked me using a card to pay..

You could just use an Electroverse card/app as that covers both Shell and Instavolt plus of course a whole host of others including Ionity. One card for all....almost. :)

Turns out I’d misread the instructions. IONITY, of course different for pretty much most other chargers in that you HAVE to sort the payment/activate the app BEFORE you plug in. Took me a little while for my dyslexic brain to make sense of that if I’m honest.
I’ll know next time!🤦‍♂️

Hi All,

Just to ask question on this thread. I recently purchased Ionity Passport for a long tip planned for germany. however issue with chargers.

I follow the app, select charger, give payment which is accepted, plug in.

It says preparing to charge and then charging then drops with no charge added. I never had a problem with Ionity before on electroverse or card but this is strange. I phoned up customer services but no help, they say car disconnects which can not be the case.

To check I went to osprey nearby to check if that is fine and it was but that ws PAYG.

Anyone else had an issue as described ?

I really do not want to use Tesla !

Double check the plug was 100% in, did the locking latch engage, if it's not quite aligned and doesn't engage then the handshake will fail

Some people have suggested holding the plug during handshake until the car locks it in place helps with various cars , this is largely due to the weight of the CCS plugs, sometimes the top bit can pull out slightly, all the communications are on the bit at the top and I believe it's designed in such a way that the communication pins will always get disconnected before any of the current carrying pin.

yes I saw that and it clicked and the display in the car said connected but not charging, I will attempt one more go at it because I can the idea of Ionity !! I will try what you suggest as well but in the situation you describe I seem to go past the handshake ?

If the handshake completes successfully and all the DC isolation tests pass then the next step would be to apply power, as this is not happening then it would suggest the car or the charger either didn't handshake properly or saw something they didn't like.

hmm the customer services could not tell be on three different plugs. There is not another site close enough to me to check it out further so will attempt one last chance there using your suggestion before I have to go and try ionity in Banbury or Cobham services.

Which model are you driving?

Which model are you driving?
profile says MG4 Trophy ER

so on saturday evening tried test again after all the advice on here, failed in the same way I described even firmly pressing it in.

Went to Fastned and Tesla opposite each other and all fine for a quick fiver in each.

Looks like will have to go with telsa :-(

sorry just noticed this is int he wrong car forum :-)

I’ve found with my mg5 exclusive, it’s quite fussy about being completely switched off while you plug in, and sometimes a locking of the car soon as you plug in, can help push the car’s communication with the charger. Prior to that my experience with some chargers was ‘sub-optimal’. No idea if this is a thing but it seems to help in my charging scenarios, particularly with IONITY

The car needs to be off for rapid charging and also AC charging, standard practice and in the manual. The 10 seconds is generally covered by getting out of the car. :)

I've had similar issues with Ionity at Milton Keynes (older type, no Halo) and occasionally elsewhere. Everything starts, and as soon as the light by the port illuminates green, charging stops.

I've managed to avoid this happening by following the below:

If leaving car unattented.
- Power off
- Plug in
- Lock the car (to lock the charging port on the vehicle)
- Tap Electroverse card to start

If sitting in the car.
- Power off
- Plug in
- Tap 'lock' on the centre console display to lock the charging port
- Tap Electroverse card to start
- Power on the vehicle to use heating etc. if needed, once charging is under way

If the charger attempts to start charging before the port is locked, this often causes the charge start to fail. After this, I can never get the charge to start unless powering the car off and leaving it for 10 minutes.

On my first use of Ionity at Milton Keynes, my other half unlocked the car just as the charge was starting. When the charge failed, my car displayed an HV batter fault and couldn't even be started. Powering off for 10 minutes got it going again.

Interesting. My pre facelift 5 has just had its 3 year "service" at which I requested the Tesla update. To my surprise they said yes there is an update to the charging software listed and they will do it. Whether this was the Tesla update I have yet to discover ( I somehow doubt it) but I did a fair bit of on the road charging last week and I had a pretty frustrating time with failed communication messages on chargers I have previously had no problem with. After a while I realised the car was not locking the cable, something it always used to do during the handshake period. Now I have to lock the car to get the cable to lock before starting a charge. It would be nice to be informed of these changes but I guess that proves the software has been updated :)
