We used to keep a few hens. One day a friend gave my wife a couple of duck eggs. She put them in the hen hut and almost immediately our tiniest bantam hen claimed them as her own. She sat on them like a pea on a mountain constantly fussing and fluttering about.
Eventually the eggs cracked and she had babies to look after. She was as proud as punch and very protective. As they grew stronger and began to be mobile we made a wee pond and the ducklings set sail across it one fine summer morning.
The wee bantam went crazy, running round and round squawking at them in chicken screams to come back ashore where chicks ought to be.
