MG has beaten rivals to the punch - Auto Express

Well, one may say MG is in a better position to jump to fully electric but really this is just wishful thinking.
To understand MG you first have to understand SAIC their parent company.
SAIC is owned by the Chinese State. It is not a private company. MG basically belongs to the Chinese Government.
The Brands exclusive to SAIC include Maxus, MG, Roewe and Yuejin. SAIC joint venture companies include Baojun, Buick, Chevrolet, Iveco, Skoda, VW and Wuling.
Now to most analysts virtually all the exclusive brands are doing better on the Chinese home market than MG and on the international market MG is struggling to compete with the joint venture companies.
MG is struggling so much so MG have had to now borrow a Roewe and stick an MG5EV badge on it to try and compete on the international market. That is how difficult things are for MG. Hiding behind wishful thinking will not change the facts and figures of true life.
And for thus claiming ZS EV has outsold all other car models in the UK in the last few months well that is just day dreaming. Have a look at what the data shows

No one is playing the ZS EV down.
It is a good car. We all choose well in buying it when we bought it. Now that we have it we have to optimize it's value and that is not done by concealing it's shortcomings. It is done by exposing them and challenging the manufacturers to provide a solution to at least the industry's basic standards.
Some may not agree with me but well it is always hard to deal with the truth but the earlier one deals with it the better one is placed to achieve better outcomes going forward.

The change in the tax position April 2020 for business use . BIK has increased the number of people wanting an EV as you can write off your Vat and also if bought on lease the Vat can be claimed back . This is the reason the Tesla Model 3 is selling so well as it fits in with all the criteria of the BIK Scheme for business owners.The MG is well in with the rules so hopefully more people will buy them when they find out how poor the Tesla customer service is and being a premium brand the paintwork/ lights have issues.A friend has only has his a month and his front light is fogging !!

@Kpa
You are absolutely right. At the moment all said and done unless one is a travelling salesman ZS EV is the affordable car to go for on the EV market.
The reason why people are all the same going for Tesla rather than the ZS EV is what we should push MG to address.
It is simply a Tech issue. Younger EV buyers are put off by it's lack of Tech and older EV buyer are tending to go with the sector leader Tesla as they tend to have deeper pockets.

@KasEV
But how does it fare against other electric or hybrid models? It’s noticeable that even Tesla doesn’t appear on your list. Again, you’re not really comparing like with like.....we all know that ICE vehicle sales far outstrip EVs

The young also go for the the Tesla as it is more of a sporty shape, 0-60 very fast and really is not a family car !

@GordieG
We are talking about MG as a company not just the ZS EV a single product.
But anyway the sort of detail that you want usually requires a purchase and as I am a pensioner I have to wait until my EV Boffins have that then I can freely assess it.
The main headline figures are free on the Web if you look for SMMT.

@Kpa
Tesla is the sector leader for several reasons but I think if MG will brush up their act on Tech they may stand a chance.

Sorry, since this is an EV forum - and this thread was started by the AutoExpress article stating that MG has beaten it’s rivals to the punch with the ZS EV - I have only been referring to the ZS EV.

SMMT data for year to date is below.
If I do the maths right and calculate from the various claims that people have made about ZS EV then out of 30k new EVs sales to date in the UK all will be ZS EV. Well let the official numbers speak for themselves.

Let's wait for the actual figures. No need to argue.
The article you spoke of is mainly based on percentage increase in sales rather than absolute numbers so I hope you really understand what it was trying to put across.

Yes the tech is very slow and outdated ,had Lexus before and you sure can tell the difference it is frustrating me at the moment.

@GordieG
I have the black MG ZS EV and just like yourself and I adore it.
I had a 1st edition Ford Edge before which was a few years old.
As @Kpa rightly put it the step down in Tech is huge and so is the price but when one sits back and looks more critically even the Tech in less costly Ford's are far better than that in the ZS EV and it is a small detail that MG needs to work on.

@Frank
My Boffins are 2 kids who are EV Gurus.
All things EV is their Gig. Mainly Data, software etc they have never held a spanner in the hand but they are able to talk numerous Tech through repairing all sorts.
To say the truth I think they don't give the ZS EV the attention it deserves but once they point me to any analysis on the ZS or for that matter any other EV then it is bang on accurate and balanced.
Anyway in terms of BEV sales figures we will be able to say soon how many ZS were sold in the UK and if more were sold than Tesla or any other brand.
The European Data is already clearly in favour of eZoe while in Australia eZoe has done so badly Renault may decide to stop selling it there.
So it is a difficult market out there and for me personally it is clear that MG needs to do a lot more if I am to be able to resell my ZS EV in the near future for any good price.

Looking at the data, its seems the ICE cars are losing market share rapidly. Especially diesels, dropping from 50% of all new car sales to 25% in last couple of years. Comparatively BEVs are up 250% comparing June 19 to June 2020.

Comparing EV sales, especially MG to ford ICE sales is a strawman argument. Ford only has 0.4% of the total worldwide electric sales, it is realistically possible they are surpassed by in the coming years by MG. And lets be honest I'm sure Ford could have devoted millions to EV/ Battery research years ago, but had ICE reasons not to.

Unfortunately you will be looking to get around £9,000 after 4 hrs with 10,000 miles each year. A big loss and If more sold will bring resale Values further down!! A lot sold on lease and PCP as well and this as well as brand /reliability / range etc will have to be factored in.

With almost perfect timing, the new Zap-Map newsletter has just come out and contains a very interesting article about new car sales. Excerpt attached
