MG ZS EV Long Range Real World Efficiency

Have you used the battery heater to warm the cells up a bit just enough to get them started not all the time?

No, I can't see the value in it to be honest unless you needed to rapid charge quickly. For normal use surely you'd use more energy than you'd gain efficiency wise?

Besides I'd have to start the car to use the battery heater, which means I'd have to sit in it going nowhere while it warmed up and no one has time for that!

Sorry I was just thinking warmer batterys perform better I also thought battery heater could be used when on the move

You're absolutely right, it can be used on the move, I seem to recall from Miles' charging video it pulls 7kw though. It'd have to increase the efficiency a great deal to make it worth it I should think.

I think if its really cold (- something) and you need to stop to charge, you can run the battery heater for 10, 20 or 30 mins before arriving, obviously you don't want to do this when you're really low as it takes 7kw away and you might not make it!!

Presumably it's 7kw/hour, so each 10 minutes use will only use just over 1kw?

I can't quite remember what was mentioned in the video to be honest. I'd still be very surprised if it was worth it though.

Might give it a whirl on the way home.

Potentially. You could probably hit that for about 70% of the year, maybe even better it. But for the other 30% it'll probably be less. Might average out though.

I've had my car since the 22nd of December and done about 1800 miles, now I do a good amount of motorway miles and my average has been 2.8 mlspkw/h, I think the average speed over that time has been 38mph. I'd say that's my worst case winter consumption.

Like I mentioned earlier though I'm now starting to see 3+ mlspkw/h regularly and twice this week have hit 3.7 on a longer run (Haydock to Fleetwood).

Bit of a long winded answer but yeah I reckon averaging 3.5 over the year is doable with a bit of care.
You‘re fine, I appreciate the response.

That‘s reassuring, as I’ve been having second thoughts due to the increase in energy costs (can’t get on an EV tariff at the moment) plus the cost of the car being quite a step up from what I’m currently paying. It’s still cheaper to run the EV over diesel but the massive saving that 5p a Kwh charging was, is now 31p, so more difficult to offset.

3.5m/kWh + would be what I’d be aiming for. I’m more an mpg than mph kinda guy now anyway.

Yeah so tried it, quickly bailed on the idea after 4 miles as my efficiency had dropped to 1.2 mlspkw/h. There's no way it'd be worth that sort of drop for a 21 mile journey.

Didn't see any noticeable gains later in the trip either, average 2.8 mlspkw/h by the time I'd got home which is about usual, particularly with the massive headwind at the moment.

I've got 180 miles to do between me and my next charge over the weekend so I don't fancy wasting too much experimenting!

I felt a bit like that as my deal was ending 27th Feb but ovo came through 29pkwh but with a bonus of charging any time 5pkwh so there still is ev deals out there?
