Sadly it is if you rush it, too many silly things for my money that should have had more thought put into them prior to final go ahead, all software related.

When I first took the car for a test drive (unaccompanied), the sales rep told me to always momentarily stop in N before selecting D or P. He emphasized it again when I went back for a second test drive and again when I picked the car up. I got the feeling that it was a solution that had come from experience. Possibly it allows the electronics to catch up. I'm not sure if anyone else was told this, but given that the same selector is found on other MG models, others on the forum might be able to shed some light on it.

I think a slight delay before engaging Drive or Reverse sounds to be the solution. We always select eco mode and check that regeneration is set to high before moving. We encountered the 'frozen' problem for the first time yesterday because we were just moving the car a short distance in a car park, so didn't bother with checking anything, so presumably the fault occured because we were too 'quick'. Maybe just checking your mirrors are set correctly or the dash status would be sufficient delay to avoid the problem. I suppose the designers do tell you by displaying a green Ready message on the display, perhaps they could enhance that by displaying the status more prominently on the main screen and educate the salespeople.

I think the ready sign is their way of getting around a problem they couldn't fix.

Do any other makes work the same?

I think it's a CVC system and I've had other cars with it and no problems.

Exactly, 2 cones so less parts to move about.

The self charge is a clever option, but how it functions is very important, what I mean is these are new cars, no wear hardly, 4 years later, yard art?

Did you ever find out why it did that. We've just git a new MG3 hybrid and it did the same to us today, we had to switch it off and on twice before we could engage reverse, really strange and disconcerting
I am not sure if this helps but I got in the car pressed start stop tried to engage R nothing.
So now having scanned the manual
1. Get in car
2. Seat belt.
3. FOOT on brake (important)
4. Press start button
5. Can screen boots then goes into Ready mode green word on dashboard.
6. Select D or ,R
7.move off

Seems to work every time for me. The key is foot on brake as a safety feature

The key is to see the green ready on the display. The car is bristling with electronics, so basically it needs to boot up like a computer and won't respond until it says Ready. All logical I suppose.

It's the right way to get started.

Don't forget your glasses if you need them, but the MG3 won't refuse to start if you forget to put them on.

I do that every time though.

From my experience the car goes into drive as soon as I've pressed the start button, and before all the graphics on the display have finished performing their act.

I got into the car yesterday afternoon and it would not go into gear, the engine started but no matter what I did it was frozen in park, I tried for about 5 minutes.

I gave up and rang the dealer. I got the one with a brain and he said does it say ready on the screen, err no, he said to press the stop/start button and then press it again, and it worked then, but it seems sometimes it takes a while to be READY, not too keen on that at all, what's it waiting for?
I found this as well then found out what to do/
Press the brake pedal first- then press the start button you’ll find no further problems.
Hope this helps.

More tips:

Driving and brake regernation settings

I was setting up the MG3 before setting off with Eco mode and 3rd position for Brake Regeneration, I have done this for a few months, but on a recent long trip I decided on my return journey to try not setting it and just use the default Normal and 2nd position that is resets to everytime you start the car to compare differences and found that not only did I get 5mpg more I thought the car was much smoother in acceleration (and much more responsive) and braking (less severe). I had expected it to be worse but obviously that is not in my case and it saves the hassle of setting it up everytime before I set off and the extra 5 mpg makes it a no brainer

Tyre Pressures
For the same trip mentioned above I checked the tyre pressures before I set off and set my tyre inflator to 2.5bar which is the recommended tyre pressure bar. When I got on my way I monitored the tyre pressure through the on dash display and it showed me the pressures were all at 2.7 bar, so I thought ok, lets see how it drives and it felt a lot more bumps. So I thought my inflator gauge may be out so I adjusted it to compensate and deflated the tyres appropriately and when I set off the display showed they were now correct at 2.5 bar (note the car display doesn't change immeadiately when you change the tyre pressures) and the drive back was very smooth again.

I hope you find these tips useful.

Having had an Eco mode on my last two cars, I rarely use it, for the reasons that you say. I prefer the responsiveness of normal mode, as eco deadens the car. However in heavy town traffic, I occasionally turn it on.
