I have the Essence 77kWh version and can't work out which version I should pick in ABRP. Is it the Luxury ER? Does the Australian version have a heat pump?

Anyone in Australia have the 64 version, if you got it would you think this car would make it comfortably from Brisbane to Tenterfield, charge at 100% at Tesla Tenterfield then make it down to Tamworth -approx kms from each town is 300 kms. The drive is quite mountainous between Brisbane to Tamworth.

Should be no problem unless you are a lead foot.

ABRP reckons it would be OK: ABRP

Charging to 100% takes a quite a while, you'll find the charge rate will drop rapidly beyond 80% state of charge. This was the charge rate I measured with some data samples I collected from one Tesla fast charge sessions to >90%:

It's a consideration if there is a queue for charge stations, as it's not generally good etiquette to DC fast charge to 100%.

Tenterfield Supercharger only has 4 charge stations. It might be empty, I guess it depends on when you travel.

That charge session in the chart above was at Raymond Terrace charging our Essence 64 from 32% to 93% and took 41 minutes (we had a lunch stop). This was that day's drive:

ohhh the choice, either the 77 or 64 - thinking thinking - but then again what is more future proof if I intend to keep the car for 10 years (and with resale values ef EV's) I am estimating the car would be worth what a uni student can afford in 10 years time, a couple of thousand $$$.

Yeah thanks I intend to only charge at the Tesla superchargers, I see I can make it to Melbourne using the Tesla ones from Brisbane using the 77 - even though they are qutie spaced away i.e Tenterfield, Tamworth, Dubbo, Wagga - but plans in the works for more at Parkes, Benalla etc.

Ps the stops would be minimum an hour with the 12 year old daughter and wife, they love exploring the towns when we stop.

I would plan trips based on using the Tesla network, and only other chargers if absolutely necessary. If one was available, I was stopping anyway and it actually worked, then sure, top up whenever I have the chance.

At that last trip when I stopped at Thrumster Supercharger, I first tried the NRMA chargers which are at the same location. Dead as doorknob.

Yeah - too much stress on my last trip to Melbourne from Brisbane Christmas '23 but I did it in my current 28 Ioniq - thinking about it - I probably shouldn't have taken that car given its small battery and range.

I have written several articles about Australian MG4 electric car software updates so readers often ask me if there’s any more recent news about this topic.

I’ve written below about everything I know so far including a detailed quote from an MG Motor Australia media spokesperson.

Please let me know if you've noticed any small changes / improvements I haven't listed

Hopefully they release an update soon for a proper CUSTOM mode that remembers OPD ON.

That R11 update gets mentioned often, but best I can tell it was only for the Essence and not the Excite. Dealers and MG seem to shrug their shoulders when asked about it. Any word from your MG Contact?

(And the Excite sorely needs it too if it addresses issues like CarPlay randomly switching to left-hand-drive mode, steering wheel buttons forgetting their setting or launching CarPlay unexpectedly, Bluetooth flaky etc…)

R05 for the Excite came out around the same time as R11 for the Essence. They seem to be version equivalent for the two variants.

R11 was released later than R05 and is different as it has the persistent bar at the top of the infotainment display and the new options (like ELK) in the pulldown menu.

There are other modules updated separately that appear on the 7” display (like the new TJA and ACC increments which the Excite did receive) but not the R11 infotainment updates.

The I-Smart app got updated recently to version 1.0.5 & on the charging management screen there is a button called "Statistic". You can set the date to whatever you like & there are 4 stats, mileage & kWh, Average speed, Travel time & Co2 saved but there is no data.

The app connects with the car for everything else so I don't know why this information isn't displayed. Anyone looked at this and do you get data displayed? All I get is Sorry there is no data.
