Recently bought a used MG4 Trophy, 23 plate, no rear windscreen wiper.

Read previous posts on here with relation to the fault I’m having. 7kW home wall charger keeps aborting the charge. Does around 2kWh initially then keeps aborting after a further 0.2kWh or so. Having to restart constantly through the MG iSMART app.

Tried two different type 2 cables. We have around 15 7kW chargers at work. Issue persists.

Not tried DC charging.

My question. Just been to the Mg dealership, they can’t book any appointments for at least 4-5 weeks. Which is great. I'm still under the used car warranty from the 3rd party dealership for another 2 months. Should I go through where I bought it from? Or wait 4-5 weeks for MG?

Also IF rapid charging works, could I claim costs back? Surely I can’t be expected to wait around 4-5 weeks with a car I can’t drive due to not being able to charge.

Does AC charging work elsewhere? (e.g. from a supermarket charge point).

Does DC charging work OK? (e.g. at an open-to-all Tesla supercharger).

Gain answers to the above and it should help your dealer to diagnose a CCU fault ... this is common on the early build LR cars with the 3-phase onboard charger.

Re. claiming back DC rapid charger costs ... your chances are between 0 and hell freezing; Tom (@tsedge) went for months having to use DC rapids before his was fixed.

Try a granny charger to confirm but it sounds like a failed CCU.

Unless you can still reject the car the best option will be MG sorting it out - maybe try another dealer?

Try a granny charger
Yes.

Failing after a period of time sounds like something is overheating, or at least changing behaviour as it warms up.

Charging with a granny charger at around 2 kW could be useful. If it fails after about the same amount of time, then it's not charging current related. If it fails after a longer time (whether that's about 2 kWh delivered or not), then that indicates that something in the AC or DC path is responding to temperature rise. The more clues you can give the dealership, the faster that they should be able to diagnose the problem.

Some of these issues can be quite time consuming to track down.

The car as is does sound to me that it's not fit for purpose.

Thanks for the replies. I’ll try:

  • DC charging
  • granny charging
  • Restricting amps on the infotainment, on 7kW charger

I have just noticed though, rather then ending the charging session on my charger's app when it’s been pausing, I left the session running when I went to bed..

It seems to have been resuming itself, then subsequently aborting again after a period of time. Too early to see on Eon's app when, as it takes a couple of days to update usage usually.

Does sound like possible CCU failure, has the symptoms.

It is key to test DC charging. If that works, and multiple AC charger types don't then almost certainly this is the problem.

You need to get it diagnosed soon because there will be a delay after diagnosis to get MG to approve CCU replacement under warranty (it is an expensive job). Then the part has to be ordered and fitted. Then there are software updates needed.

These days you shouldn't have to wait ages for the part like I did but the end to end process is complicated so you want to get it started asap.

So try other dealers if you can (warranty works everywhere) and play up the hardship card if you can to get them to squeeze you in.

As mentioned, try other AC charging outlets - simply to rule out your AC charge point as being an issue.

I'd still try another AC charging site just in case there is something your MG doesn't like about the "chargers" at work. I assume that they are all the same brand?

Though if other MG4s charge without problem there, then that's probably sufficient.

Ahh I get you. They are all the same brand, I guess no harm in trying another site as you say. It’s booked in for 5 weeks after all.

Feel your pain, in the early days there was a shortage of CCU's in the UK, in the end took like 2 months to do the fault diagnosis and another month to get a replacement CCU, early 3 phase CCU's seem to have reliability issues that's for sure. I felt that the garage tech had his hands tied because every decision seem to be from MG HQ and they ensured that the whole process was sh!t@
